Well, that hadn’t quite taken as long as he had expected. The writing was on the wall with SEA. He knew what he’d have to do if he wanted to make the people in charge of this happy. He might not be the golden son any more, but when he was being groomed, he had picked up more than a few tricks. Getting the lay of the land as the political winds shifted was one of them.
And to get in the best position later on, sometimes you had to make necessary sacrifices. He wasn’t the most moral guy to start with, considering his position now.
So he played along, sent the message back to the director. Information was sent to him on his target. He was working on some general ideas and doing research alone in his lap when he heard Jerry let out his little proximity alert. As a precaution, Jerry had been programed to alert him whenever it felt someone or something approaching. After all, agents here could take many forms, and a mission like this was best left undiscovered by those uninvolved. In a flash, it was all gone and uploaded back into his mind.
Yet there was no one around that he could see.
“…Uh… Jer?” The little robot buzzed and beeped as it circled underneath a light fixture.
With a shrug he started to turn back toward his work when the light over his head started to flicker. He couldn’t feel any power fluctuations in the rest of the building… just in the fixture above him. Just as he was about to get a ladder to further investigate, he felt the power get cut and heard a little squeek.
“Mice?” He looked down at Jerry. “It had to be mice.”
Of all his failsafe protocols, he had not planned for a mouse invasion.
