It wasn’t very often the turned off the whole power-nullification thing. When they did, however, it was pretty sweet. Even if she was alone. Oh well. It wouldn’t be easy to scream in the Hologym with an audience; nobody wanted to go back to their suites with bleeding ears.
One thing that was always tricky – and it remained tricky, since they were so hesitant to let her practice her vocal abilities – was utilizing two of her abilities simultaneously. Carly could be screaming a shrill, piercing sound or manipulate the air and wind; doing both at once? That was more of a challenge. Since she finally had the opportunity to work on it all, she figured it couldn’t hurt to try utilizing the whole dual-power thing.
She started off with the air; twisting it around her, creating a small whirlwind to lift her off the ground. It wasn’t quite flight or levitation, but the effect was similar. Stabilizing herself was difficult, especially since she had to be so conscious of maintaining the air pressure as she got higher and higher in the simulation.
Once she felt stable and sturdy, she finally let out a high-pitched scream.
The effect was instantaneous – it was such a loud, damaging, piercing noise that it disturbed the air around her. It had a visible effect. The whirlwind she had around her feet to keep steady was distorted, resulting in her plummeting back to the ground.
She groaned, rolled onto her side, and swore several times under her breath. The simulation disappeared, and Carly was left in the empty Hologym with a hurt backside and wounded ego.
“At least I can finally hear my beautiful voice again,” she muttered as she sat up.
