It was no surprise to anyone that Julian didn't really enjoy spending too much time indoors. He'd been born and raised in the swamps of Louisiana, after all, so being outdoors came natural to him, especially when back home he'd spent hours as a kid exploring and as he'd grown older he had begun to appreciate how nature linked in with the religion he'd been raised in. It wasn't your typical faith, but it was where he came from, especially in the Cain family and there wasn't much he could do to honour their traditions in Limbo, so he did what he could: be outside and appreciate nature, so that was what he was doing. More or less, anyways. He was sprawled on the grass, flat on his back with a cigarette clasped between his lips as Julian watched the clouds as they rolled on by. Cloud spotting was definitely one way of passing the time and if you were imaginative enough you could turn them into pretty much anything your mind could conjure up. One cloud was currently shifting and turning into a dragon. Juniper had decided that today would be the day. The weather was nice - not too cold and definitely not too sunny - and there weren’t many people out and about on the grounds. Not that it was supposed to have mattered to her anyway, Marshall and Dove and Alejandro, even Mira… everyone had said she shouldn’t be afraid. That didn’t change the fact that she was. But she’d found a clearing and beat her wings until her feet lifted off the ground. She’d been told that there was a dome around the compound, that if she flew too high, her limiter would activate and she’d be taken down to the ground and taking - what they called it in the movies - a dirt nap. At least, that’s what she thought that meant. Maybe she was wrong. She’d been in the air, wheeling overhead for about ten minutes when she spotted someone laying on the ground, looking up at the sky. She could see the cigarette smoke lazily being puffed from his mouth and the way his hair - knotted and tangled it looked like - was splayed out on the ground underneath his head. Sunlight gleamed off the jewelry he was wearing and she couldn’t help her momentary fascination which had her drifting on a course that took her immediately over his head. When she realised, she quickly veered off course but the lapse in her concentration meant that she was losing altitude and to regain her momentum she would have to fly higher than she could really risk it, so she wheeled back around, tucked her wings in close to herself and let gravity take the reigns. When she was about ten feet from the floor, though, they stretched out again with an audible whoosh and she slowed down almost immediately, gracefully touching down on the grass, a little way away from the other Super. Julian’s brow drew together when he spotted what looked like a human figure with wings, large bird like wings, not just a person but a girl to be exact. The same girl who was for moment right above him before she suddenly veered off course in what for a moment looked like she may be in trouble, but as he sat up he watched as she rather masterfully came in to land. He took a final drag of his cigarette before he got to his feet, the butt of his cigarette being disposed of in the nearby bin as he wasn’t about to leave it out in the grass. Not when he’d been raised better than that. “Nice landing,” he complimented with a smile. Juniper turned to look at him and clasped her hands together in front of herself, her wings fluffed up a little because of the wind and the anxiety at speaking to someone new. She rocked up on her toes, wings flaring as she stood awkwardly. Her eyes dropped to the ground and she didn’t answer for a moment before she just nodded her head and opened her mouth to speak before thinking better of it. A few more second passed before she finally lifted her eyes to look at him and she shrugged a shoulder, eye contact with the other Super fleeting. “I- uh- thank you.” Okay for somebody so confident in the air she was shy and that wasn’t something Julian had been expecting but that was okay. He’d known shy before, his baby sister was shy after all, so he wasn’t put off by it. “Welcome,” he offered with an easy smile. “I gotta tell you that you just made this day a whole lot more exciting.” Wasn’t every day you saw a cute girl with wings the size of a small car and the grace to handle them in the air after all. A hand was soon offered. “I’m Julian.” Juniper rocked on her heels, wings flexing a little as Julian approached, his voice and accent a low drawl. He was clearly from somewhere down south. His dreadlocks looked even more interesting close up and she could see that the flashes of jewelry she’d caught from the sky were rings, earrings and piercings that covered his skin, along with a few tattoos. Juniper had never gotten a tattoo, needles terrified her; she didn’t even have her ears pierced. “I did?” she asked, looking at the outstretched hand, “Why?” She looked at her own, her dark nails, and then took his, shaking it. “Juniper.” “Not often you see a pretty girl with wings in the skies above you,” Julian returned smoothly as his fingers curled around Juniper’s hand and a shake was given. He didn’t even seem remotely phased by the fact she had wings or the fact her nails were dark, he’d seen plenty of weird and wonderful in New Orleans. More so than most in Limbo simply because his family had run in those kinds of circles so the Cain children had been raised in a very open minded non judgemental environment. Hell, Julian created golems out of the earth after all. Juniper’s cheeks went scarlet at the compliment and she just ducked her head to hide the fact that her face lit up not just with the blush but with a smile. She tucked her hair behind her ear with her other hand and once the handshake was over, she twisted her fingers together. Her wings fluffed up - a part of her was extremely flattered by the compliment. “I’ve not flown outside of the hologym since I arrived,” she confessed. “I didn’t know how high I could get.” She bit her lower lip and, as if just then remembering her manners, she added, “It’s nice to meet you, Julian.” “You too, Juniper,” Julian offered as he proceeded to put both hands in the pockets of his low riding jeans. “Bet it feels good to stretching your wings out here than in the hologym, it’s definitely not the same.” He knew creating golems out here was a lot easier and fun than it was in the hologym. That and nothing out here was going to knock the shit out of him, but he’d conquer the hologym, next time. “There’s no birds in the hologym,” Juniper said with a nod of her head, “and the wind feels real but it’s not. I just- I wish I could go higher.” She looked up wistfully, pupils contracting in the light as she returned her gaze to look at Julian. “I prefer flying with birds. It- it’s freeing.” She frowned a little. “Are you the guy who posted on the network about, um, golems?” His face looked familiar, a little like the avatar of him. Her eyes widened a little and she hurriedly explained, “I- I’m not- I mean I just read stuff. I don’t- I don’t always talk on it.” “Guilty as charged,” Julian answered with a smirk. “Got my ass handed to me by the hologym so I feel you on the not wanting to be in there.” Thankfully he had recovered both from the physical bruises and the not so physical ones to his ego, he was pretty resilient that way. Only upside to that experience was that he’d figured out that if he wasn’t the one dismissing them then it really hurt when it happened. “I’ve thankfully recovered.” Juniper smiled a little, “That’s good. I mean- it’s not good that you got hurt but it’s good that you’re better.” She twisted her fingers together and rocked up on her toes, biting at her lower lip as she toyed with the idea of asking him to see what he could do. She was curious about his golems, after all, he had a power to make something, and that was pretty amazing. “What were you doing out here?” she asked. “I’m not real big on spending too much time indoors,” Julian said as he lifted his hand and rubbed it over his dreadlocks. “Didn’t do it much back home so looks like some habits are hard to break even here at the Regiment.” It was no secret that Julian missed home but more than home he missed his family. “And you never know who you’re gonna meet.” Juniper smiled a little and nodded, “I- I get that. I- I never used to spend much time indoors either. I miss being able to fly all day though, the rooms here are kind of cramped.” She tucked her hair behind her ear again. “At home I used to fly for hours. And it just mean that-” Her voice caught a bit and she cleared her throat, deciding that she didn’t want to talk about her own home anymore. “Where are you from? You’ve got an accent.” Though, she added after a moment, “But- if you miss it- it’s okay. You don’t have to talk about it. It sucks being in here.” “New Orleans,” Julian offered easily because as much as he missed home it wasn't enough to make him stop wanting to talk about it especially as sometimes he felt if he didn’t talk about it then he might start forgetting details and details were everything. He didn’t disagree that being in here sucked because it did but it definitely beat jail. “Jail sucks more.” Juniper moved a little closer and, with a sweep of her wings, lay down on her stomach, chin in her hands and elbows on the ground, looking up at Julian with big eyes and wings that flopped in a relaxed manner to one side. “Tell me about it?” she asked, since he seemed willing to, and she was willing - more than willing - to listen. |
