Honestly he was the jailer and keeper of plenty of people that he had come to care about over the years. Yes, it was always going to be unfortunate that he couldn't save Alice from this fate. She didn't know. As far as she was aware, he was the villain of her story. The brother that betrayed her by not getting her out of the Regiment even though there was no real way to actually get out of the Regiment. Someone would always find out, always. Someone would always turn them in, always. Alice might not have been replaceable. But Lucas sure was. He was sure it was easy for them to get rid of a man that 'never worked for them'.
It wasn't his job that he was terrified about losing. As much as it was his life. Even though he was scared of losing his position. He wouldn't have the opportunity to protect the supers that needed to be protected. There was too much at stake. But it was always going to easier just to say 'it was his career' that he was worried about.
Lucas' expression softened. "I'm sorry you have to go through this, Alice." His voice soft, sympathetic and the calluses he was sure he once had was gone. "The Regiment are monsters in more ways than one." Ava being gone echoed in his mind. The companionship and trust he had with her for six years gone with just a simple conversation and a small window to get her out of Limbo. Off to somewhere else.
