The way I have learned… bureaucracy can be bought and sold just as easily as going to the store to pick something up.
“Yeah, well. Thanks for the mansplaining, or whatever.” It wasn’t as though Jade was ignorant to the way the world worked, especially when it came to people’s prejudices. Unfortunately, there remained a small part of her that hoped, despite her cynicism, that things could, and would eventually, change for the better. It would just take action in the face of thundering stupidity and greed, as currently embodied by her brand-new handler.
As soon as he began walking again, Jade continued to follow him. She thrust her hands into her pockets to keep the urge to reach out and strangle him under wraps, as intense as it was. She couldn’t even be bothered to take in her surroundings yet, still too focused on the man in front of her, and the reality of her new abode.
Her brow furrowed. “So… what is it? You literally just said that you got a BMW out of it, which is, oh I don’t know, somewhere between thirty and a hundred-k? Do you always contradict yourself this much, or is it just a special treat for my first day?” She scoffed at his last remark and rolled her eyes, grateful he was looking ahead. “Poor you.”
After another turn down yet another corridor, Jade cleared her throat. “Listen, you don’t need to give me the layout of the entire place. If you show me where I’m bunking, I can pretty much figure out the rest. I’d hate to waste your valuable time.”
