The lessons being taught were already tough on some level; most folks had a preference for avoiding hurting others, so more often then not it was flight over fight that won out. Teaching her how to inflict real pain, how to kill if need be...Bear already knew it was a lot to handle. So he saw no reason to make it any harder then it had to be. Instead of hammering the lesson in like some drill instructor the big guy walked Dove through it all with genuine gentleness. Oh it was a workout; constantly doing the same moves over and over again until her body had it down, until it became almost like second nature.
Still through it all his composure never fell. The mountain of a man smiled and praised her warmly with every victory she had earned, and quietly corrected the little bird when something was off. Bear knew this was just the first real step; knew that repetition and diligent training every week would be needed if Dove truly wanted to get it down. Yet he also knew that building up her confidence, not unjustly by any means, but by allowing her to see the real results that she was accomplishing through her hard work...knew that that was key. And honestly she was making great strides. For a girl who had never really fought before she was already quick to pick up the basics.
At last when the young woman seemed to finally get the basics of the wrist, thumb, and elbow locks down the large man finally paused again. Allowing her to catch her breath, and to take a quick breather once more, before smiling again at her remark. "Honestly I love it. Being in the thick of combat, up close and personal...using my fists and body to pummel my opponent to the ground." His laughter rang out, so rich and warm, yet a moment later he moved close to her again. That large hand of his reaching out to rest on her shoulder.
"You are tiny, but that is not bad. Remember what we have gone over and this time just mix it up...I will grab ya, and you will break free." There was no doubt in his mind or his tone either. Bear knew she could do it; had complete confidence that the little bird could handle herself. That hand of her gripped her should a tad harder; not enough to hurt or bruise her at all, but enough to get a grip, and as he reached to grab her wrist as well Bear just nodded for her to begin. He wanted to see it, wanted her to see for herself that the lesson wasn't in vain. That by using what she was learning; mixing things up with a well placed kick, a jab, or a lock, that she really could turn the tide on someone trying to get her.
