WHO Dani Danvers | Jett Danvers
WHAT Checking up on big bro
WHEN Post-explosion (back-dated)
WHERE The Infirmary
RATING Low
STATUS Complete
He’d slept for about twenty minutes after Holly and Ben had dropped him off at the infirmary, just twenty minutes to start with before the ache in every single one of his bones decided to let him know they were present and accounted for. A quick look around signalled that Holly had left him to rest, which he was grateful for, really.
But it also meant he was going to have to get up to get something to drink, since his mouth tasted a lot like ash.
What he wanted was to roll over, force himself to go back to sleep, ignore everything for a while longer, but he knew the ashy taste would bother him and his limbs were already seizing. A quick stretch, something to rinse the taste out of his mouth and then he would crawl under the covers to hide from the world for a while longer.
He wasn’t looking forward to the questions, or who heard what, or saw what. It was a good thing he had no body shame, although he’d need to thank Holly later for the blanket to try and save some of his dignity and to stop him flashing the whole base. That was just more stuff to avoid.
Pushing himself upwards, not liking that feeling in his back at all, Jett rubbed the heel off his hand into his temple to shift the headache, groaning slightly.
---
As soon as she caught wind of the story, Dani took off towards the infirmary like a bat straight out of hell.
It was only by the grace of her abilities that she was able to duck and dodge every potential obstacle and avoid knocking other people over. There were many times since her adolescence that Dani praised the practical usefulness of her intuition, but today was not one of them; she was far too focused and intent on getting to Jett – making sure he was okay, whole (literally), and that he was being well looked after.
By the time she barged her way in, Jett was already sitting up in bed, nursing some water, and looking as though he hadn’t slept well in twenty-or-so years.
“Oh my god,” Dani crowed. “Jett, ohmygod!” He looked fine, of course—definitely in one piece—but that didn’t make her feel any better about the rumours that had already started floating around the facility.
She practically leapt at his bed to pull him into a back-breaking hug. “People were saying—you were—oh my god, I’m going to kill every single person in this place—are you okay?” Aside from not being able to breathe, probably.
---
Having barely managed to lower his glass and give Dani a small smile before she was barrelling into him and crushing what was left of his energy out of him, Jett thought about pulling awkwardly away with a frown before opting to just breathe around the crushing hug.
Choosing to just lower his glass and raise another hand to Dani’s shoulder, head tilting to just rest a moment, he let her get her fill of crushing him before his aching muscles decided it was really for the best that he be able to continue breathing to let them heal up and rest. “I’ve been worse, I’ve been better.” He wouldn’t go into that though.
“I’d like to be able to breathe, Dani.” She was stronger than she looked, especially when she was worried, and while he appreciated that, greatly, he did still need oxygen despite the super powers. Holding his breath wasn’t one of his after all.
“There’s no need to kill anyone, D. It was no one’s fault.” Except probably his own, and stupid foolish hope.
---
I’ve been worse, I’ve been better.
Dani’s arms tightened. She’d been without Jett for so long that even just the faintest hint of losing him again was enough to spark a large wave of anxiety and over-protective impulses that made the concept of letting him go rather unthinkable.
When he mentioned that he’d prefer the ability to breathe, Dani made an oop sound and quickly loosened her grip from around him. She gingerly sat by his side on the bed, her expression uncharacteristically sheepish as she watched him carefully, searching for any larger signs of duress.
“Okay, no killing,” she reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze. “People were just saying… ugh, it’s no big deal, fuck them all, they freaked me out.”
But it wasn’t about her.
She softened her gaze and sighed. “Geez, Jett. Are you okay? Is there anything you need?”
---
He could imagine what people were saying, given the state he left the gym in. And fine, yes. He maybe deserved a little of it, but he didn’t like that whatever it was got to Dani so much. For all that he was the big brother, she was every inch as ferocious in her protection as he was. Maybe more so, given her tenacity.
Looping an arm around her shoulders, engaging the ‘big brother half hug’ that he deployed to comfort himself just as much as her, sighing as he rested a cheek on her head. He was still mad she’d ended up here, but so grateful for her presence right then.
“Let them say whatever, I don’t care.” It would die out in time, he was sure. Holly didn’t seem annoyed with him, concerned if anything really, which likely meant he wasn’t in trouble for anything. “The hug helped, honestly.” Because tactile contact was always the best with Jett.
He had some water, the ashy taste was going away thankfully, and he had been told to get some rest, which he would. But beyond that…
Did he need anything?
“I will be, nothing too serious. Just… I haven’t blown up in a few months, I didn’t know I needed to.” Given how often he’d been doing it, he’d never had the time to stock up more and more energy, never known that was an issue. “Any word on Ben? I didn’t catch his second name as I blasted him through a wall.” He assumed Holly made sure he was okay too, but he didn’t really remember much beyond getting to medical.
“They’re making me stay for a while, but I could really use some clothes to go back to my room later?”
---
When Jett rested his cheek against her head, Dani slumped against him. It probably should have been the other way around – her comforting him, after all that had happened – but whatever way the knife cut, it was a kind, quiet moment of solidarity between them.
“They’re just being bored idiots, but it’s still not okay,” Dani grumbled. His assurance that the hug had helped caused her to laugh softly. “Oh yeah? Even though I’m pretty sure I heard bone crack?”
Dani straightened up when Jett began drinking his water and assuring her that he would be fine, that it had been a building accident, and asking after Ben. “People are naturally saying some fun stuff about him, too, but again—bored, dumb people. Since nobody in charge is acting especially grim, I assume he’s doing okay.”
She crinkled her nose when he asked her for some clothes for when he was able to finally leave the infirmary. “Okay, ew,” Dani laughed—she wasn’t really all that bashful about those things, not even with her brother. But if she could get him to laugh, it’d be worthwhile. “I guess I can manage that, lest you have to walk around flapping in the breeze. Hopefully you’ll like the outfit I pick.”
---
Clearly, mutual comfort was such a thing, and realistically, Jett was just glad that Dani wasn’t off hexing people who said something too loudly, since it’d likely get her into some trouble. “If bone isn’t cracking, it’s not a proper hug.” He managed a small smirk as he nudged into Dani a little.
It stood to reason that people would talk about what happened, and that there would be wild rumours already. That was just how information travelled around the base, and Jett would just deal with it later, if Holly or Ben hadn’t already cleaned it up. And he wouldn’t put it past Holly to do that.
“I would hope so, otherwise there should be a check on just how these people treat agents for sure.” But no, Ben seemed to have done okay in it all. Maybe a tad better than Jett if he were being honest. And really, that was for the best. Jett would much rather be the one needing to sit in medical for a few hours than have Ben needing to see whatever specialist they had for when a fellow agent blew them up.
“I think a few people might’ve saw a tad more of me than they’d have liked. Those shock blankets aren’t terribly big you know.” Although at least Holly had thought of something. “You could bring me a skirt and a My Little Pony shirt and it’d be better than what I was wearing on the way in.” But he in no way wanted to leave in the medical issued scrubs.
---
“See, that’s how I feel about it too, but apparently sending people to the hospital because of a hug is considered intense or whatever. Everybody’s gotta be a weak bitch but us.” She mirrored Jett’s smirk back at him, theirs twin expressions for a fraction of a moment.
Dani crinkled her nose. “There should probably be more checks on that anyway,” she reminded him. “Though, I guess people here aren’t as bad as I thought they’d be.” Or as bad as they could have been. Holly and Russell were cool enough, and Hazel was probably the legit coolest; really, it all could have been a lot worse.
And for Jett, they almost had been.
She managed a real, warm, loud laugh at his outfit suggestion. “Well, I won’t have you scarring anymore innocent eyes around here, so I’ll try to resist the urge to bring you my Juicy Couture track pants and a sparkly tube top.”
Sitting up a little straighter, Dani regarded him carefully; despite the humour, and their other attempts at mutual comforting, she still couldn’t fully dispel the anxiety that plagued her all the way to the infirmary. “You okay? Seriously?”
---
Jett barked out a laugh at the comment, sending someone to hospital with a hug was probably a bit much, but it was the Dani way, always had been, and Jett had never complained about that. “You just love intensely, Dani. Nothing wrong with that.”
People weren’t as bad as first thought, although Jett was rather sure this place was one hell of a step up in general. “They aren’t, are they.” Jett would likely sing Holly’s praises if Dani asked, and it probably came across as being a suck up, but in general, he meant it. She was an exceptional handler and he felt she was likely a very good friend too. He was glad to be here, even if it wasn’t always easy.
“I will stretch those pants out something fierce, and wear the tube top as a hair wrap, it’s your wardrobe you’re ruining.” Especially since she would not look flattering in anything his butt had stretched out.
Getting serious, even just with Dani, was a little bit of a downer. “Yeah, I think so. Just… sore, I guess. In more ways than one.” Because the explosion just brought back all kinds of issues, not least how painful it could be splintering apart and pulling back together, but that twice now, without his meaning to, he’d put other people in harms way. “I honestly thought I could just use this when I wanted, and I really don’t want to use it at all, while we’re being honest.”
---
Dani winked and shot a finger-gun in Jett’s direction. “You just get me,” she replied. “Though it’s possible you also give me way too much credit. I’m not complaining, mind you. In fact, I welcome all the love and compliments.” Ever so gently, she swatted his shoulder. “So? Chop-chop. My ego is waiting.” For emphasis, she tossed her long, wavy hair over her shoulder and looked like she was sitting on a beach, waiting for the waves of flattery to start washing over her.
She didn’t want to jinx it, but she nodded in agreement. “Maybe we lucked out for once?” With a slightly smug smirk and scoff, she added, “Though, I am perpetually lucky, more often than not.” She knocked her fist carefully on the side of her head. “Knock on wood.”
She laughed at the mental image of Jett running around in her sweats and stretching out the valour and a tube top stretched across his dark hair. “God,” she bowed her head, still laughing, “It’d be totally worth it to lose the items for the sake of the photographs.”
The Super pursed her lips. Gingerly, she placed her hand on top of his and offered him a comforting, sincere smile. “And who could blame you? That’s probably not in anybody’s Top Ten of Coveted Superpowers. Maybe,” she squeezed his hand a little tighter, “They’ll be able to help you learn how to control it, though? That’s why we’re here, right? I mean, one of the reasons. And I’ll help you—however I can. Whenever you need me.”
---
Chuckling a little, Jett shook his head at Dani’s antics, but appreciated that she was still able to make him laugh, “You’re a gift to the world, Danica Danvers.” And she could screw her face up all she wanted, he only dropped the full name when he was being particularly serious.
“I suppose it had to happen eventually, your stellar luck aside, I was due a break.” And that was putting it very mildly, temporary bad luck aside, things had been fairly smooth since being transferred out of Texas. And Jett was exceptionally thankful for that, oh yes. Although her enthusiasm at his potential embarrassment just had him rolling his eyes, “I just blew up and had to be dragged here, shaking and naked, by our handlers. Do you really think having the word JUICY over my ass is really going to have an impact now?” It would, yes, but still, he didn’t really want her to test any theories.
As much as Jett would hope they’d just tell him not to do that again and leave it at that, he wasn’t going to hold out hope for it. “Knowing Holly, tomorrow I will have a scheduled plan on when I’m meant to train it, use it and how to better control the energy build up. That’s while she’s seeing to Ben, the repairs and wrangling our team. You might need to help her out there.” He respected the hell out of Holly, she was an amazing woman, and a great handler, but this was definitely one time he would’ve been fine with her just letting him do whatever.
---
“Ew,” she grumbled, only half-serious, “Don’t full-name me. Nobody likes the name Danica.” That wasn’t entirely true; Sasha had used that a lot more than she’d ever used Dani – but that was sort of her thing.
At least when Jett used it, she knew that he just meant what he was saying, whether it was a reprimand or a compliment.
Dani laughed loudly again when he asked her whether or not her track pants would really be that embarrassing to his dignity after all that he’d already endured today. “I mean, I think so, but if that’s a theory you wanna test, I’m happy to oblige!”
The Super shook her head at the long laundry list that Holly apparently had to handle. “That is gonna be one busy lady. But I guess that’s the job, right? And… if she can help you? Maybe that will be a really good thing. And I’ll help too, obviously. Anything you need. Inappropriate wardrobe and beyond.” She smirked as she gently touched the side of his face before she sat up further onto the bed, folding her legs underneath her.
“In the meantime, I hope you don’t mind some company. I think it’s important that I stay here with you and bother you until I’m absolutely positive you’re in good spirits. As a gift to the world, I consider that my most noble duty.”
---
Nudging at her side, shaking his head, because at least she got a name. “Don’t start, you loved that when you were a kid.” She just grew into herself later and decided she was more of a Dani, and really, Jett agreed. Dani was a force of nature, Dani was fierce and sudden and explosive. Danica didn’t suit her for that.
The prospect of help, even with something he didn’t exactly want to do, was help at least. He wasn’t terribly apprehensive about it all, he knew that Holly would approach things in a manner he was okay with, she’d let him feel it out. Like she did during training with his clones and working out how to absorb the hit rather than create a clone. But that was part of it to, given that the energy he absorbed from not cloning added to the energy used to explode.
It was almost incentive for Jett to clone every time. Expelling what he could like that so that the build up was never something severe. It wouldn’t exactly work though, and Jett knew that trying it was likely going to be worse in the long run. He just had to face the music.
“Company is pretty good though, because otherwise I’ll sleep and then my entire routine will be fucked.” His own company was shit right now anyway, at least this way he wouldn’t just sit there and wallow, he highly doubted Dani would allow such things.
