WHO: Oyle Slick
WHAT: Oyle wants to hide, the Gamemakers have other ideas.
WHEN: THE FINAL DAY!!!
WHERE: The east side of the arena
STATUS/WARNING: completed narrative - usual HG warnings
Oyle had decided, she wasn’t going to go the feast, the three Careers left could fight it out. Her stomach ached at the idea of food but she would stay here as tempting as the lure of it was. She would wait here for them all to either die or come and find her. She hoped that they would all show up at the feast and kill each other and then she could go home. Winning outright wasn’t an option, she had barely been able to handle Beatrix, there was no way she could take on trained Careers in a fight.
So she sat and waited and waited. She ignored the howls of the mutts, the increased mist, but what she couldn’t ignore was the lightning strike a few inches from her. She screamed and moved.
“OKAY, OKAY I’M GOING!”
When she stopped again, the howls got louder and there was another lightning strike.
The Gamemakers weren’t going to give her an option to sit and wait out the finale and be the victor by accident.
She kept moving, as slowly as she could. Occasionally she paused to pick up a rock and put it into the purse that Almond had left with her, that was her only weapon besides the rope still died around her waist, but there was no way that a Career was going to let her strangle them with it. When it started to rain, she held out her canteen but she knew that the Gamemakers were sending her a message hurry up.
She wasn’t sure which way she should have been headed but whenever she veered off course, there was another strike or the howl of the mutt. They wanted to see her fight to the death and she felt like throwing up.
In a few hours she would probably be dead, she just hoped that she didn’t embarrass herself more than she already had. She thought about home and her parents and how she knew they were watching. Would they cry if she died? And then her mind went to Halle. She was sure that she had been behind some of the gifts, Miles and Terra had made it clear that they were behind Shift and only cared about his winning the Games. She got angry when she thought of how hungry and thirsty she had been in the first part of the games but then she put it out of her mind.
She needed to concentrate on not dying. There was never a moment where she thought she could win like the Capitol would like, but maybe, just maybe there was a chance that she wouldn’t die.
A cannon boomed and she was surprised. Had it started? Had her plan worked? Was she moving just fast enough?
It was a small comfort that if she made it to the feast, there would only be two Careers instead of three. There was still the chance that they would off one another before she even arrived.
It was a small hope but that’s all she had as she made her way to the cave.
