And on the fourth day, the rains cleared and as the sun rose in the sky, the two girls got to work, quickly doing what they could to make the vineyard as tribute unfriendly as they could, while not completely destroying the food source. They picked berries and smeared them on the grapes, hoping that that would be enough without looking obvious. Oyle asked herself if anyone would really notice the smears onto the fruit. She cut off part of her rope with Almond’s knife and they tied it between the grapes, hoping an unlucky tribute would trip over it.
Anything they could to give themselves an advantage before someone else joined them. They would need it, or at least Oyle would need it. Oyle had a feeling that Almond would fare better in a fight than she would.
“Do you think maybe we could like, I don’t know, set something up for rocks to fall on someone’s head without using up more of the rope?” Oyle asked.
Almond took a step back to observe the vineyard, tapping her finger on her chin as she contemplated the various ways to kill a person in a field of grapes. There weren't any tree branches hanging nearby, which made it tricky to rig up a trap that involved something falling on a fellow tribute.
However, maybe they could make that fellow tribute fall. "Maybe we could dig a hole for them to trip into," she replied, thinking back to the previous year's male tribute from District 6. "There are vines all over the ground from the rain. We could cover it up with the vines and they'd never realize."
Oyle looked around and nodded her head. That sounded good to her, she would probably fall into herself if she didn’t know about it. “It’s too bad that we couldn’t like put a pointy stick in it so if they fell on it, it would hurt or something,” she said, but they only had so much time before someone else showed up to dine on the grapes and they would just have to work as quickly as they could.
“Wait, how are we gonna dig the hole?”
...That was a good question. Almond looked into the sky for a moment, hoping that some magical silver parachute containing a shovel would come drifting out of the clouds, but it was getting pretty far into the games. They'd just gotten stew the other day, and sponsor gifts were pretty rare as things went on.
"Well. let's find that pointy stick. And I have my knife. Maybe we can't make a huge hole, but we can make ones to trip people up and slow them down. It will be like the gopher holes at home."
Oyle nodded her head. That sounded like a plan, even though she wasn’t sure what a gopher was, but Almond knew and they could at least work on that for now. Maybe it would work and maybe it wouldn’t work, but at least they were trying.
