WHO: Beatrix Cottontail [D10 tribute].
WHAT: Beatrix versus the Gamemakers, Round 3.
WHEN: Day 12; early afternoon.
WHERE: Cloud 9 [H3].
STATUS: Complete narrative; Gamemaker mutts.
'Oh, come on!' Beatrix had only just escaped the falling trees earlier, moving north along the open rocky terrain and avoiding getting too close to the Cornucopia where the Careers were probably still camped out. The rainstorm was still beating down on the arena, and pulling her soaked fleece sweater over her head didn't provide any cover from the storm at all. She was also freezing and hungry, having long finished her jerky and bread -- but with all the water falling around her, she wasn't thirsty or in need of a shower, at least. The last thing she had wanted or needed on top of all that was for frogs and an angry horde of other slimy, slippery amphibians she didn't recognise to swarm out of nowhere through the mist and attack her. She'd seen enough Games during her short life to know that aggressive wildlife suddenly appearing was yet another Gamemaker trick to make things interesting -- or take out tributes no one wanted to be a victor. Not that she could figure out why they wouldn't want her to win. Maybe they had mistaken her for some other tribute -- it was very hard to tell everyone apart with the mist and identical arena outfits, after all! She couldn't remember the other tributes well enough to think of whom the Gamemakers could have intended the mutts for instead. Nor was it on her mind the second a tiny salamander jumped into her open mouth as she screamed and rolled around on the ground to fight off the amphibians. She'd eaten plenty of weird things back in the Capitol, or at least she would claim so -- but she had definitely never swallowed a live salamander before. And then two more of them and a frog somehow managed to squirm down her trousers. To no one's surprise, she screamed again as she tried to wiggle and kick them out. It didn't even cross her mind that the amphibians were actually just perfectly normal animals, the Gamemakers not even seeing her as worthy enough to be taken down by real muttations. Or maybe the worst they wanted to inflict on her at the moment was further indignity than mortal injury. Either way, the amphibians suddenly stopped hopping and scampering around, as if controlled by a hive mind somewhere far away, and retreated back into the mist just as quickly as they had appeared. But Beatrix barely had any time to bask in the glow of her triumph over the frogs and amphibians when she heard a loud buzzing sound in the distance. Even through the mist, she could see a dark cloud of flying dots quickly moving towards her -- and while she didn't recognise what the hell the insects were supposed to be, the audience watching probably would have realised they were locusts. And she wasn't about to start making up for time she didn't spend at the Edible Insects station. |
