“I’ll be back,” Oyle promised. She wanted to look around a little bit, but they didn’t both need to waste their energy. The lack of food, they had run out of cookies that morning and the dead bird had been momentarily satisfying, and lack of water was leaving them both weak. Oyle was sure though that there had to be something somewhere, hopefully close.
She shoved her hands into the pocket of her fleece and kept walking as quickly as she could. The vegetation was changing slightly and when she first saw it, she was sure that she was hallucinating. She rubbed her eyes and then blinked several times. Was this a dream?
Quietly, she moved closer just in case it was a trap, or there was someone waiting. She clenched her broken piece of china in her hand, just in case someone was waiting to off her.
There were neat rows, something was grown here for a purpose and she moved quickly across to see what was on the vines.
Grapes.
She’d seen them in the Capitol, they were on their table in their quarters every day.
With shaking hands, she pulled one off and looked at it, hesitating before popping it into her mouth. What if this was a trick? What if they were poisonous?
She swallowed hard. Her mouth was dry and lips were cracking and she craved this little grape in her hand. She glanced around, there were grapes on the ground, and it looked like someone had been there. But? But.
She was starving and she knew they were grapes and put one in her mouth, the juice filling her mouth and moistening her dry, parched mouth.
The grape gave her a second wind and she moved quickly, collecting as many as she could. Some from the vines, some from the ground, she shoved them into the pockets, when her pockets were full, she grabbed as many as she could in her arms, ignoring the large bugs on them. Maybe they could eat those too.
When she had all her things, Oyle ran back to where their camp was, her breathing labored and her lips dry.
“I found something!” she whispered to Almond once she was back and placed her goods down in front of Almond like an offering. It would do for now.
