The air felt thick and humid, the high grasses felt familiar, and she could hear the buzzing of some flying insects further away. Her feet were glued to the platform as the time ticked down; her district partner met her eyes from across the field. If there was any advantage they had, it was this. It was the arena. The gong rang in her ears just as she saw her partner’s eyes flicker toward the machete near him. Fawn didn’t even have the time to scream No!, as the Career boy came up beside him. The boy had no weapon, just his fist, but his fists were enough. Fawn approached cautiously with a drawn pocket knife, realizing that the groans and whimpers of a tribute closeby were not subsiding. The boy was older; he was from Twelve. She had never seen a tracker jacker sting in person, only when watching the televised Hunger Games. “Please.” He said. “Please kill me. Please, make it stop.” Seconds passed by. Perhaps minutes. More whimpering. “I’m sorry,” Fawn whispered to the sky. I’m sorry he got stung. I’m sorry he will die this way. A cannon. Then, a silver silk parachute fell from the sky. An announcement echoed throughout the entire arena; Fawn was the only one alive to hear it, but she couldn’t comprehend the words. Despite having administered the cure to herself from the Feast, she could feel the exhaustion, the hunger, the thirst, crashing in all at once. She saw the boy from Two being picked up by the hovercraft. Both of his hands, which were detached from his body, too. Fawn fell to her knees, her blurry vision resting on the Cornucopia. Could she go home now? |
