Life had never been the same since Royal won the games. Sure, he had settled down and married a nice woman in District One. Did he love her? Yes, though he used the excuse of settling down as a way to distract himself from the games. Even if he was busy trying to encourage people to volunteer. District One needed another Victor. What he hadn’t expected was for Ruby to fall pregnant. Nine months of worrying as to what would happen to the child. Especially if his career ideology didn’t work out. But all those thoughts and fears went out the window the second he laid eyes on his daughter. “She looks so much like you, Royal,” Ruby cooed to the infant, her hazel eyes still focused on the newborn babe as she spoke. Then again, Royal’s eyes were drawn to her as well. His daughter and his wife. And as of right now, there was nobody prettier in the whole District. Looking at Royal, she continued, “Do you want to hold her?” A wave of apprehension jolted through his body. He had never handled an infant before. Gold, yes, but never an infant. Especially his daughter. “Don’t worry,” Ruby teased as she shifted herself on the bed so she could hand the babe to her spouse. “She won’t break. Just hold her like so.” It was in that moment that Royal was fully engrossed in the beauty of his daughter as he ran a hand through the small little tuft of brown hair she had. It was as if she was a glittering little diamond. Maybe that would be a fitting name for the child. He kissed her forehead gently before he spoke again. “I promise that I won’t let any harm fall upon you love,” Royal told her and as long as he was alive, he was going to stay true to that. Royal enjoyed seeing his little girl grow up. His Diamond. Ruby and him had decided shortly after she was born that the babe would be an only child. Since Royal was usually busy with mentoring and his acting. Besides, it would be better for him to give his little girl all the attention she wanted. And in all honesty, Royal spoilt the girl. Ruby had started teasing him that Diamond had her Papa wrapped around her finger…and it was true. Though all the attention Royal has doted upon his beloved daughter was put on the wayside since there was a Victory Tour that had to be done. Royal had managed to bring home another Victor to District One. And he knew that Sugar would one day take over his mentoring duties. Not that Royal minded, it meant more time to spend with his family. Then again, he was looking forward to seeing his beautiful daughter after he got home from this tour. “Papa!” Diamond cried out as he got off the train once they finally got home, bounding to her father. “Oh, you’ve grown in the few weeks I’ve been gone,” Royal told her as he twirled her in the air. “Have you been good for your mother?” “But of course!” Diamond exclaimed, smiling widely. She couldn’t wait to tell him the decision she had made. Of course her Papa would be so incredibly proud of her. “Though there is something that I have to tell you.” “And what is that, my love?” he inquired, wondering what his daughter had on her mind. Maybe it was some drawing or something she had procured in the marketplace. “I’ve decided that I want to be like you, Papa,” Diamond admitted, her smile growing wide. She did mean Calixte and Sugar too. But clearly her Papa was the best victor. Royal was quiet for a second. Clearly, he wasn’t expecting that. “You’re sure about this?” he asked, wanting to make sure that she was serious about the commitment it held. Diamond nodded with a great enthusiasm though. And in all honesty, Royal was proud of his little girl all the more. “Okay, then we shall start your training tomorrow.” As much as Royal admired his daughter for wanting to follow through on the Career training, he didn’t expect for her to volunteer. Though come the 28th games, that was just the case. And even though Royal knew that she would do well in the arena. Win, even, if he allowed himself to be so optimistic, the promise he made to her as an infant started to come to the forefront. “Are you sure that you want to do this?” he asked her for what was probably the tenth time over the course of the week. “Because if you don’t, we can always find somebody else to volunteer.” She was only seventeen. And if he could keep her safe for two more reapings, all would be fine. “For the tenth time, yes, I want to do this, Daddy,” Diamond told him, her brown curls laying loose. If anything, she was excited for it. “Sugar and Calixte both know what they are doing. And besides, I’m lucky enough to get a third mentor.” Royal smiled. It was amazing how well his daughter had blossomed during the course of her training. Especially when it came to the blades. Maybe she did have a chance. “True, but I just don’t want to see you get hurt.” “No parent does, Daddy. But I promise you that I won’t,” Diamond told him as she pulled him into a bit of a hug. “I’ll just be gone for a few weeks and then I will be back home. Besides, with my win, I’ll do something that nobody has done before. Be the daughter of a Victor to win. We can make history!” Royal just nodded. He admired her confidence. He just had to hope that she could come back home to him. “Of course we are,” he paused a second before he continued, “just remember that I love you and that I’m proud of you regardless.” “I love you too, Daddy.” |
