Who: Bolt Wheeler [D10] & NPC Marcelline Dewlap
When: Interim after the 39th games through the present
Where: District 10
What: Hypothetical decisions become real ones
Prompt: Chocolate
Bolt lets out a low sigh. "You're sure?" Marcelline nods. "I'm sure." The crowsfeet around her eyes crinkle in sadness as she tries to force a consoling smile. "I've never been more sure about anything in my life." Bolt takes her trembling hands in his. They made this decision years ago, talking through all the what ifs and possibilities. In the hypothetical, they never wavered, but now that reality confronted them… He gives her hands a reassuring squeeze. "I love you." This is not the safest or cleanest or most law-abiding part of the District. Bolt worries the procedure may not be safe. It is expensive and risky to secure; hiding away from the prying eyes of the Capitol and the gossip mongers of the district is never an easy task. He waits, anxious, in the next room. In fifteen years, they've never had so much as a momentary scare. They were too careful for that, or so they thought. Both in their forties now, perhaps they aren't as careful as they once knew themselves to be. Later, when he is permitted to see her, he gives her the best, richest milk chocolate he could find. He kisses her forehead and holds her as she cries. They stop talking about possibilities and what ifs and what could have beens. Sometimes, when giving a lesson or watching district children play out in the fields, Bolt wonders what kind of a father he would make, or would have made. But every year on the day of the Reaping, he thinks of the sacrificed children and families of the other victors. Every year, as two more children are selected to die, he knows Marcelline made the right choice. |
