This was different. This was so much different than with Kobe. Kobe's death, despite her posturing, despite what she'd half-convinced herself, was an accident. She may have caused it, but the conscience she tried so hard to bury here in the arena still took some comfort in the fact that at least she didn't do it actively. That conscience couldn't take that same comfort with Brock, the name it forced back into Halle's memory. It wasn't even an act of mercy with Brock; it wasn't even self-defense, not by the end. She just killed him. She could have driven away, out of danger. Left his death to the conscience of another tribute, or to the Gamemakers, who had no conscience to worry about at all. Rain could mask her tears if they were to come, but they didn't. Brock had to die so she could live; it was that simple. And so would the rest of them. A conscience could be the death of you in the arena. |
