Halle should have paid better attention when they talked about bleach at first aid training. She never considered she would actually come across some in the arena, and she only wanted to store knowledge that would be helpful. There was something about bleach and water and proportions, but for the life of her Halle couldn't remember the math. Still, she had Kobe's bleach, so she may as well figure out how to use it. The water she'd found in the duck pond looked disgusting, but she was desperate. Frequent cannons that day and night meant the other tributes were getting desperate, even if there weren't that many of them left. She was already weakened from blood loss; she couldn't go forever without water, too. She grimaced and filled one canteen. How big was it? How much water could it hold? She knew drinking too much bleach would be as bad for her as drinking dirty water--or worse--but she didn't fancy dying of some horrid infection either. She dipped her finger in the bottle of bleach and let three drops drip drip drip into the canteen. She hesitated, then added one more drip. She closed the cap and shook the canteen violently; she was so thirsty, but she was sure she had to wait. The bleach couldn't have killed everything it was supposed to kill that quickly. Preparing to fill and treat Kobe's canteen the same way, Halle's work was interrupted by the Panem anthem. Her eyes drifted upward; there had been so many cannons today, and she wanted to know what (and who) the arena still had in store for her. The faces of careers flashed above. Multiple careers. It made her sick to feel so relieved; she didn't go so far as to smile, but it was close. She already knew, after Amelia's anthem, that she was the youngest and smallest tribute left. As the anthem finished, she realized something else. With nine girl's death, she was the only non-career female left. On paper at least, she was surely the easiest target in the arena. On the other hand, she might have the easiest time hiding, as well. Her arm still hurt, not to mention the gash in her side, but overall she wasn't hurt too badly. There were only eight tributes left. Only seven people left to outlive. |
