Reaper didn’t bother to wait for the hovercraft that would come for Patsy. Knowing the Career girl from District 4 was more than likely nearby, he ran away from the sideshow tents as fast as his legs could carry him. Even as he started to huff, puff, and gasp for air, he kept running toward the Tunnel of Love camp that he now shared with only Zap, afraid that if he even stopped for one moment a Career would find him and exact revenge for what he did to their ally. He was so focused on running that he didn’t see the uncovered manhole a few yards in front of him. As his right foot fell into the gap, he let go of his prized weapons and the two clanged across the pavement on the opposite of the manhole. Reaper’s arms flailed as his other foot fell into the pit, but somehow they managed to catch themselves on the brim of the pavement to hold his body upright. Pain shot through his broken wrist and up through his arms and caused him a small yelp which was followed by a his. Beneath the surface of the pavement, his legs twisted and kicked, though he couldn’t feel anything below him. “No,” he croaked to himself as he attempted to use his arms to hoist himself out of the void. “Not like this.” Though he said one thing, he was obviously struggling to hold his weight with only one good arm and the more he struggled, the more he started to slip. He clawed at the pavement with his good arm in a vain attempt to hold himself above ground, though to no avail. Within a minute of tripping into the manhole, Reaper’s head went under and into the darkness. He fell a total of two feet. As his feet hit the ground, he teetered a moment until falling backwards onto his behind, foul smelling water splashing all over his clothing when he finally hit the ground. Reaper looked upward to see how short of a distance it was to the surface and instantly felt like an idiot. “Great,” he muttered to himself as he stood and shuffled the small distance to the ladder that would take him above ground. “Just great.” |
