Over the first few days in the arena, Rye had decided a few things about his surroundings. Firstly, it was small in size. He had walked around frequently and seen the same buildings a few times and it hadn’t been as big as he’d expected. Second, there were plenty of hiding places. It made him wary, quick to dart away if he heard a noise in case he ran into someone else. But other than the boy he’d fought the other day he hadn’t seen anyone but Machine and Ace, meeting up with his only remaining ally as often as he could. He walked, slow and determined, clutching that heavy tree branch. It was a terrible weapon, and he knew it would be useless against anything that a Career might have. Disappointed that his mentors seemed to want to feed him instead of arm him, Rye had debated stealing one of the pizza pans from the kitchens but had eventually returned to the branch. Pizza pans were too stupid. On the third day he was walking close to the pizza restaurant when he gave another look at the building labelled “House of Wax.” He hadn’t been inside that building yet. Cautiously, quietly, he opened the front door. He stopped, head snapping upwards as he heard the faint sound of a door slamming. Probably just the wind. He passed through dark rooms, lit only by natural light, ignoring the occasional sound of breathing. He was alone, as far as he knew, and it was certainly a strange place to hide out. He opened doors quietly, trying to be ready for any surprises that might be thrown at him. The only thing that betrayed his underlying fear was his slightly quickened heartbeat. It was the third door that he opened, unable to stop himself from gaping when he saw them. Statues of them all, every tribute, were arranged about the room. He walked past them all; District One, Two, Three… every tribute that he’d been in the training sessions with. Machine, Ace, himself - all with the same pose. He paused by one of the female figures, looking straight at Kelly’s face. He muttered a sorry, feeling stupid as he did so. It wasn’t her, but seeing it unsettled him. At the end of the room, however, he found something else. He paused again, picking up the candles before stuffing them in his backpack without another thought. Without another look at the statues, Rye made for the door and left. There was nothing else to see there. |
