Bolt gently brushed through Shamrock's lovely, deep green hair. He didn't usually care for it when Capitolites took it upon themselves to 'improve' upon their animals they way the improved upon themselves, but Shamrock's modifications were relatively minor and didn't seem to affect her mood or performance. Bolt supposed there were worse things than being green. "How's she doing?" Silvius, Shamrock's owner, came down into the stable. "She's good and content," Bolt said, patting the horse with affection. "She's got a nice demeanor, your Shamrock." "All well and good," Silvius said, "But I meant Pax. How is she doing with her lessons?" Ah, Pax. Of course. Silvius's darling daughter, who didn't know the meaning of words like 'no' and 'stop' and 'don't hit the horse'. Who spent the whole lesson complaining that she couldn't be inside watching the action of the Games. Bolt spoke through gritted teeth. "Wonderful." Lie. "She's really getting the hang of things." Lie. "She and Shamrock are a good match." Definite lie. Shamrock deserved much, much better. "Good, I'm glad to hear it," Silvius said in the tone of a man who couldn't care less. "I suppose you're expecting a sponsorship now. I have to tell you, I'm not too sure about that boy of yours. He hasn't done much to impress. That girl, maybe, but not him." "Everybody's underestimating that kid," Bolt replied easily. "He chucked his training score so he wouldn't be the first target of the Careers--better odds for you then if he wins, mind. He just needed a little time to adjust to the arena, but he's sure to shine soon." "Hmmm." "You know his mother's the mayor, right? She's good at what she does. Knows when to play ball and when to stand firm. It's a trait she's passed onto the kid, let me tell you. He may not be the strongest contender, but he's wiley. Knows what he wants and doesn't mind waiting for the time to be right." "Hmmm." "Plus he broke that girl's arm like it was a twig." "That's more like it." Bolt sighed. "Can we count on your sponsorship?" |
