Maxima couldn’t sleep. Sure her interview with Caesar had gone well and she was convinced that she could do well in the arena. But the anxiety had started to settle in. What was the arena going to be like? How would she do in the cornucopia? Sure, she was going to get away from it as fast as she could. If she could get away from it, then she could focus on getting as far as she could and making Ma and Pa proud. And Jaishree. It was Five’s year to win. She had to make them proud. And yet, she wanted to say goodbye, since realistically she knew this was the last time she would see them. Hopefully, if she won, she would...but Maxima wanted to focus on the arena. And the five still didn’t sit well with her. Instead, she decided to treat her insomnia by saying goodbye to her escort. She knew she wouldn’t have much time and it seemed like earlier Jaishree was busy. But Max decided to take a risk. Walking over to the quarters where Jaishree was, Maxima rapped on the door. Quietly enough so she wouldn’t wake up Ma, Pa, or Zap but loud enough that she hoped that she could get her attention. She just had to remain confident. Jaishree was still awake, going over messages from potential sponsors. Her little darlings would be off in the big bad world in the morning, but there was still plenty of work left to be done. She registered the knock on the door a few seconds late, grumbling to herself as she made her way to the door. Well, that was certainly a first. She wasn’t usually the last source of solace for the tributes. “Maxima, darling, why are you not getting your rest before the big day?” Maxima had expected that response from Jaishree. She should be rest, saving up her stamina so she could fare well in the arena but she couldn’t. “I know, but truth of the matter is I can’t seem to get to sleep,” she admitted, kind of feeling bad for disturbing Jaishree. “And well, I wanted to say goodbye before I stepped into the arena tomorrow.” Jaishree gave her a knowing smile, folding her arms in front of her. “You’re hardly the first tribute and you won’t be the last.” Jaishree moved forward, giving the girl a hug before stepping back. “Come on, why don’t I find us some chocolate? One more treat won’t hurt you. Besides, I know that if you are smart and try your hardest our goodbye will be a short one.” Or she’ll be dead. Such was the way of things. The embrace was exactly what Maxima needed. Sure, it wouldn’t make things better but it would soothe her nerves for the time being and maybe make it a little easier for her to sleep. “Chocolate may be nice,” Maxima quipped since this would probably be the last thing she’d have before those provisions. “And I do hope it’s a short one. I just want to make everybody in District Five proud.” Even if she knew that the odds were that she’d probably let them down. Well, she wasn’t going to dwell on that. “Of course you do, dear. Of course you do.” They all did. Jaishree ushered her in her room. Normally she’d never allow anyone from the Districts into her personal space, but the poor thing did seem a bit nervous. She rooted around in her drawer before pulling out a handful of chocolate bars. “Will this do? Normally I keep an assortment, but we are nearing the end of the week.” A lady had to keep up her strength. “Now, why can’t you sleep? I know you said you wanted to say goodbye, but there will be time for that tomorrow.” Everyone did. That’s probably what every tribute said. Career or not. And the calm and confident front that Maxima normally wore wasn’t really there. She was wavering and nervous. She promised that she would for all her fallen tributes and that was something that was hard to live up to as she was ushered into Jaishree’s room. She knew that normally she wouldn’t be allowed here, but she wondered if this would be her accommodations if she won these games. She hoped so. “It should,” Max said quietly, taking a small bite of the candy bar, “I don’t know why I can’t sleep. Nerves I guess,” she admitted to her, “and I was afraid if I didn’t say goodbye to you tonight that it would slip my mind tomorrow.” “I suppose you’ll have a lot to think about. Mind the crumbs, dear.” Jaishree sat down on the edge of her bed, motioning for Maxima to sit down on the chair across from her. “Darling, nerves are perfectly natural. As scary as tomorrow must be, you must realize what an important role you play. You’re part of a tradition that’s meant to serve the greater good. What role could be more noble than that?” She had a feeling it was hardly the comfort the girl needed, but there wasn’t much more she could provide. The odds were never good, but Maxima had proven herself to be more adept at weapons than the average girl for Five. She was eager to please and determined, certainly positive attributes. She had hope for Maxima, but she knew better than to allow herself to get too attached. Max simply nodded. She couldn't make a mess. Nor did she want to. Though part of her wanted her life to be back to normal as she took a seat. "I know they are. But I don't want to let them show in the arena," Max admitted, "though you do make a valid point." Maxima was well aware as to the games and why they participated. Why it was her role. And yet Maxima wanted nothing more than to go back to working on the lines. But that meant she'd have to win first. “Then don’t,” she said simply, not appreciating the fact that it probably wasn’t that easy. Jaishree had seen carnage first hand. She had felt the immense pain of a traumatic injury. It was her own fault, but she still felt that on some level she could identify with these kids. Granted, when she was injured she had first class care and no one was trying to kill her. Still, they were scrappy District kids, surely they knew how to pick themselves up. “Now, why don’t you try to get some sleep? You’re going to need to be aware and awake when the gong goes off. You’ll have enough to worry about then, there is no point in overthinking things now.” Easier said than done. If only she could be confident in the arena. But there were careers and she was just an outlier. The fate of their alliance with nine was still in the air. Maxima hoped it would stick since she was one who suggested that they ally. She could do the lone wolf strategy if she needed to, but then again, maybe the Capitol just needed to give everyone sleeping pills the night before the arena. “I think I shall try to do just that,” she admitted, “besides, you make a good point. And besides, if I can push my worries aside till after the cornucopia, then I can use them for something else.” She finished as she arose from the chair and back to the entrance. She hoped that she could sleep and that tomorrow, well that the odds would be in her favour. |
