It was the middle of the night, but Karat was wide awake and waiting. Tonight was one of the few nights when he could meet with his beloved. It wasn't possible that often - there were hurdles, responsibilities, dangers... but the signal had been given, received, and returned and that meant that tonight, he was coming. So Karat lay awake, watching the door, listening only to the pounding of his own heart. The signal was the way he folded his napkin. If his beloved was serving their dinner and Karat wanted to see him that night, he folded his napkin before he set it onto his dirty plate. He'd meet his Avox's eye to make sure that he understood and the tiny flicker of the boy's lips told Karat that the signal had been received. If he set Karat's glass of brandy on his left side, it meant that he couldn't make it. But if it was on his right side, the way that it had been that night, then his Avox could come to see him. Karat had lifted the glass to take a long, slow drink and he watched his beloved walk away from the table. He could tell by the sway of his hips that he knew Karat was watching. Then he stay awake all night, waiting for him to arrive. The door opened almost soundlessly, shutting again gently once someone had stepped inside. Karat recognized the red hair, the pale skin, the red clothes in an instant. That was practically all he had anyway, before his beloved was slipping beneath his covers. Karat's mouth found his and their bodies pressed together, eager to feel the reassuring weight of each other again, after waiting for so long. After all of their desires were completely satisfied, Karat lay with the smaller boy in his arms, his chest pressing close against his back. Their bodies were completely entwined, with Karat's lips pressing against his neck. "Are you asleep?" Karat breathed, softly, and felt the Avox shake his head just enough to answer the question. "Me either," he murmured, pressing a few kisses against the soft, creamy skin. They didn't get to be together like this for long enough to waste any of it on sleeping. So they stayed awake all night. |
