Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Cassidy and Veronica
Where / When: Today, their apartment.
Why: Testing out this forgiveness business
Rating: R for language, WIP, closed.

It had been one of the many reasons Cassidy had jumped. That, and the thought of having to face Mac, watch her face when she realized exactly what type of person Cassidy was. But yeah, the number one thought had been cowardly, just a desire to not have deal with all the shit ever again. And it had been a relief, watching the sidewalk come to meet him, to kinda forget about everything.

And then Colligo happened. And here he was again, and people he didn't even fucking know bringing it all up again.

Cassidy sighed. He owed a huge apology to Willow (and even then his mind kinda did the squee thing over her name), because, yeah, he knew where the quote came from, right before poor Warren got flayed, and he had fucking stood up and cheered over that because WILLOW JUST KICKED ASS SO HARD. And yet with the knowledge that Willow had actually LIVED through it and suddenly it wasn't so much fun. He supposed with Veronica now realizing they had come from an alternate reality that people knew about, he should talk to her. See if she still wanted to do the whole forgiveness thing. Cassidy closed the laptop and pushed away from the desk, went to the door of his room

Veronica wasn't in the main living area, and Cassidy crossed the empty room to her closed door, knocked lightly.

Veronica had been staring at the last message from Andrew, trying in her own head to reasonably explain her actions, but it just didn't come to her. She closed her email and shut her laptop before swinging out of bed and walking to the door. Paused to take a deep breath and popped it open, Backup jumped down from the bed as well to see who was there, and upon seeing Cassidy, he heeled at Veronica's feet, tail wagging, panting happily to see their roommate. Sweet, innocent Backup, she thought before leaning in the door frame.

"So what'll it be? A Pizza Quest, Colligo style? Movie?" She pretended to gasp scandalously. "Is this an early happy birthday thing? My birthday's Tuesday, Cassidy, silly boy!" Ruffled his hair, Backup barked enthusiastically and she stepped out of her room to seek out her shoes. "Well, it's your pick. I have no preference tonight except that we do, in fact, get out."

Cassidy bent his head under Veronica's hand, smiling slightly. It was hard, sometimes, to reconcile this Veronica to the one on the roof, so intent on killing him. He'd felt bad then, thinking Keith had been on the plane, but everything else had been secondary to killing Goodman and keeping his secret.

Then of course the Veronica at Shelly Pomeroy's party. The only time he'd ever... performed with a girl.

But here was a new opportunity, and even if Cassidy had to recognize that the shit he'd done in the past was determined to follow him, he still, pretty much, had a blank slate. He hoped. If proved otherwise he wasn't quite sure what he would do. Patting Backup's head he followed Veronica into the main living area.

"Pizza sounds good, I suppose," he shrugged, finding his own jacket. "And is it... really your birthday on Tuesday?" Felt a faint sense of panic at the pressure that would bring.

Veronica had slid the dreaded teal jacket on, stuck her hands under her hair to pull it up out of being stuck under it and shrugged. "It's not important." She certainly didn't see any reason to celebrate, just wanted to go about her usual getting by around this place. Backup barked and ran over when he saw them putting on their outside things and Veronica grabbed his leash off of the hook to attach to his collar. "Good boy!"

Veronica lead them out into the hall once he was ready, and went straight for the elevator, pushed the button. For the most part she could hang around him without feeling weird at all. For the most part. On rare occasion his stare would bring back memories and she'd feel like she needed a shower, but those moments were becoming fewer and fewer. The elevator dinged open and Veronica jumped inside, smiled when Cassidy joined her.

"I hope you don't think you can out-eat me."

As the elevator door closed Cassidy shuffled his feet nervously, tried to give Veronica a smile. "Nah, Dick was always the one who could eat pizza like he was breathing." Veronica seemed awful close and Cassidy gave her a quick look, took a step away. The silence that fell was uncomfortable, and both of them stared at the numbers ticking away the floors.

"Um," Cassidy said at last, unable to stand it anymore. "Was Dick okay?" He gestured awkwardly. "After... everything. I figured, kinda, that he had the worst part of things."

Oh God, that was almost more awkward. Veronica cleared her throat and Backup looked at her like he expected a command. She patted his head gently. "He was. . he took it all pretty badly. Drank a lot, got kicked out of on-campus housing at Hearst. He was the one that took care of all the funeral stuff with your mom, your dad didn't com back from the Cayman's when he heard. Not for a while at least, then he turned himself in."

The doors finally opened and Veronica stepped out with a relieved breath. Backup's tail went a little fast when he saw the outside through the door and she pushed it open to be dragged to the fire hydrant nearby, which Backup quickly marked, as usual, as his own. She sighed as she waited for him and he finally dropped his leg and pranced ahead, Veronica looked to Cassidy and smiled. "That was your tip of the day in manliness, in case you couldn't tell."

Cassidy had to laugh. Veronica had always been able to do that to him, make him smile, make him not so sunk into his own head. Mac had been expert at it, but Veronica's own attempts at deflection and being unwilling to deal with deeper feelings was fine with Cassidy. "Backup makes an excellent role model," he said, instinctively bumping Veronica's shoulder with his own to share the joke.

They continued their walk down the street, both of them still getting used to the neighborhood, trying to scout out an acceptable pizza joint. "So your birthday. Wow. Nice way to celebrate, hey? Stuck in some... alternate reality." He shrugged. "We could try to escape, I guess. Better than sitting around sniping at each other, waiting for someone we lo-- waiting for other people to show up."

Veronica sighed a little. "See that's. .kind of the thing. Everyone is working with their strengths and whatnot to find a way out. . but do you really think whoever. .or whatever, I guess, brought us here was stupid enough to overlook all of that? I'm pretty sure this is a pretty smart cookie, we're dealing with." Backup was walking a lot nicer now and she wasn't as strained by his powerful pull. She sighed. "And if anyone else is coming it won't be for a while, apparently they all com close together or a while apart in this place." Logan was never easy to drag out of bed, she mused. And Keith, God only knew what Keith was doing right now. But she didn't bring any of that up. She'd reconciled with the fact that she was here, so was Cassidy, but the others just weren't.

She elbowed him lightly. "But you, hey, not everyone gets a fresh start, you know? And I. .really think you can do right by it. None of that stuff can hurt you here, Cass. And you know I'll help in any way that you need me to." The neon sign to a pizza and wing place came up and Veronica grinned a little. "Hey look, food ahoy! Wanna split a pie half and half? We'll take whatever's left home for this weeks lunch or whatever."
