"Probably not," was the most honest answer he could give her. Jim felt he owed Amanda honesty. She'd been nothing but nice to him, kinder to him than his own mother had been to him in a very long time. He wanted to tell her that was one of the reasons he was conflicted at the moment -- his mother -- but couldn't bring himself to burden her with something like this when she clearly had other things on her mind.
He could guess at what it was, but wasn't about to point it out. He'd known Ambassador Sarek had been here and that he'd gone. He didn't speak with the man personally out of...well, he provoked his son right in front of him using Amanda as bait. Granted, it was under the orders of the older version of the man, but that didn't make him feel any better about doing it -- especially now that he knew Spock's mom personally and kind of adored the woman.
