"It is a matter of human nature." He shrugged slightly. "They fear what they cannot understand. Even moreso if it conforms to the physical standards of a thing that is already feared." Or in Claire's case, the fear was of replacement. But he didn't say that. He imagined she'd already gleaned that much for herself, if her world was anything like his. "While I can understand their fears, I cannot lie and say that it does not hurt."
He shook his head, waving it off. "I can wait. And if not, then at least those who read the tale will know of my repentance." He could deal with the burden of his crimes and everything his vengeance cost him. But it didn't mean he couldn't hope.
"Then I shall wait," he replied cheerily. "It is all I can do, is it not?" He leaned up, flopping his hands against his knees. "Thank you, Claire. I am glad you are the first person I met here, you have given me hope that perhaps here I can be accepted. But I'm sure you had some other goal being out this early, am I right?" He smiled. "You've been a great help, but I cannot in good conscience take up any more of your time."
