One moment, they were on Appa's back with the banished prince sitting atop the bison's head, reigns in hand as he wondered just why the waterbender sitting at the back of the saddle behind him hadn't killed that man who'd murdered her mother. He almost did it for her after she walked away from the man, but hadn't wanted to upset her in any way by overstepping his boundaries - whatever those were. Nothing was clear when it came to this emotional bender, least of all his place. She blew hot, she blew cold, sending him mixed signals at every turn. Did she hate him or want his help? Did she want him to throw himself off a cliff or teach the Avatar how to firebend? He didn't know and was tired of trying to tell. He'd helped her, but he'd yet to receive a thank you.

Maybe he didn't deserve one. Maybe it was foolish of him to even expect some gratitude, even a minor amount, for the effort he was exerting on her behalf. Perhaps he was still just a selfish prince from the Fire Nation and wasn't capable of being nice in her mind. He might never redeem himself to her and if this didn't do the trick, he didn't know if it was worth trying anymore. He might be better off just accepting that she hated him and would never look at him like she had down in those caves in Ba Sing Se ever again.

He was about to ask how she was doing, when suddenly, they weren't on Appa anymore. He blacked out and when he came to, he was sprawled face-first on cold, marble tile next to a tall bookshelf.

Zuko pushed himself to his knees, blinking as his eyesight reset itself, belatedly remembering he had a companion and calling out, "Katara? Waterbender! Kat--" He stopped when he laid eyes upon her, letting out a sigh of relief. The Avatar would ring his neck if anything happened to her, especially since the boy had been opposed to this trip in the first place.

"Any idea what just happened?" He asked her, climbing to his feet and plucking one of the books off the shelf. Odd. There wasn't a title...and even stranger, when he opened the book, all the pages were blank. Zuko dropped that book and pulled out another and another and another, flipping through book after book and finding nothing but empty pages.

"This is really starting to wei--" Zuko began, when he was suddenly seized by someone in a suit of armor who came seemingly out of nowhere. "Hey!" He shouted, "Put me down!" Craning his neck around the armor as he was picked off his feet and carried towards a pair of grand doors, he spotted Katara being seized in a similar fashion by a second person in armor. "Let her go!"

He tried to bend, but it had no affect and soon the doors opened to reveal a bright, sunlit world and he and Katara were deposited unceremoniously onto their rumps in the street. A strange, metallic box was tossed at both himself and the waterbender before the guards retreated back into the library with the blank books. Zuko scrambled to his feet and ran after them, but the doors closed before he could reach them. He pounded on the door, bent fire at it, and kicked it, but nothing happened.

Swearing in anger, Zuko marched back down the steps and held out a hand to the waterbender. "This is not my fault," he told her, the words tumbling out of his mouth seemingly of his own accord.

Katara had been a mixture of emotions following her face-off with the man that had killed her mother. Truthfully she wasn't quite sure why she hadn't killed him after Zuko had helped track him down. She'd wanted to kill him. She should have, too. It would have been well within her rights to do so. Yet when the time had come, something had stayed her hand. She wanted to claim it was because she was above such pettiness, or perhaps because she had found some way to forgive him for his atrocities, yet she knew that wasn't the case. In fact, if she were being honest, it was probably Aang that was responsible. His love for life, his belief that every life was sacred, was something she truly respected and she simply didn't want to have him look at her any differently than how he currently did. If she'd killed someone, even for a crime they had committed, she knew he'd never look at her the same and Katara wasn't sure she could handle that.

Yet even with all of that decided, part of her almost wished she'd gone through with it. The fact that she hadn't was bothering her and she'd remained silent on the trip back, too lost in her own thoughts to realize she'd yet to even so much as thank Zuko for what he'd done. She had just been about to do precisely that - or at least make some sort of comment that wasn't outright hostile or rude - when quite suddenly she wasn't where she'd been a second before.

The feel of the cool marble beneath her cheek had her squirming slightly. "Stoppit," she muttered, her sluggish thoughts deciding that either Sokka was playing some sort of trick on her, or Toph was responsible. Hearing her name being shouted by Zuko - hearing the tone of his voice - made her realize instantly that neither was the case and without thought Katara was on her feet and blinking her vision into focus.

Whatever she had been expecting to see, the sight of a Grand Library was certainly not it. "I was going to ask you the same thing..." she murmured, voice slightly awestruck as she moved as though in slow motion toward one of the shelves. Just like with her companion, every book she looked at was blank inside and lacking a title. And, just like with her companion, as soon as she was about to comment on such a thing, she found herself suddenly lifted off her feet.

"Hey! Stop it!" she screeched, struggling in vain to twist her way free. She couldn't move her arms and couldn't reach her pouch, so bending was out of the question, but honestly likely wouldn't have even tried when she realized that Zuko's attempts were falling flat. Instead she continued to demand to be put down until, quite suddenly, she was.

As Zuko attempted to regain entrance to the library, Katara turned her attention to the strange devices that had been tossed their way. Her hand absently slid into his as he helped pull her to her feet and slowly, her wide, blue-eyed gaze flickered up to his face. "Somehow I don't think I can blame even you for this one," she only half-joked, wordlessly handing him one of the boxes before taking a second to glance around. Her eyes seemed to grow even wider at their new surroundings.

"Zuko," she finally spoke, her tone faint and slightly awestruck, "I think we might be in some real trouble..."

"I'm not that clever," the prince responded semi-jokingly, only half-aware of the fact that he was still holding onto the waterbender's hand. Not even when he squeezed her fingers with his reassuringly when she voiced her concern about the trouble they might be in did the fact register. He was too focused on the situation to notice that he still had a firm grip on her.

It was something that came in handy as a shrieking noise to their left sounded, causing the firebender to react without really thinking about doing so as he tugged Katara behind him and bent a ball of red hot flames around the fist of the other hand as he thrust it out before him threateningly at--

"A pair of pygmy pumas?" Zuko balked at the pair of black cats that tumbled out of an alley as they hissed and spat at one another, swatting one another with their claws once, then twice before tearing off down the street. He let the fire around his fingers die off. "Very pygmy."

Katara had just noticed that they were still holding hands and was about to comment when, quite suddenly, she was standing behind Zuko as a pair of very unusual looking animals came into view. Her eyes narrowed a bit at the back of the firebender's head as she released his hand and stepped up alongside him, gaze falling to the animals.

"I'm... not sure if they're pumas or not," she murmured, the frustration with Zuko for having stepped in front of her like she was some sort of helpless little girl having died as she watched the strange creatures fight amongst themselves. Once they were out of sight, she turned back to Zuko with a deep frown.

"That settles it. We need to get some answers, and fast," she decided. Her gaze flickered around them before she pointed in the direction of what looked to be a series of shops. "Let's try that way. Where there are shops, there are people who run them, right? Maybe they'll have some answers."
