WHO: Gwen and Arthur
WHAT: A rescue
WHEN: Tuesday, late in the evening
WHERE: A street
RATING: Not too high, talk of violence
STATUS: Complete

Gwen found herself slightly lost, realising now how stupid it was for her to go a walk around the area to see if she could find anything interesting. Now she had no idea where to go, and had the strange feeling she was being followed. Suddenly she found herself being grabbed around the waist and pulled back against something solid. The unmistakable smell of alcohol hit her nostrils and she placed her hands on the arms holding onto her, trying to push.

"I think you should come with me, pretty lady," she heard against her ear.

The more she struggled, the stronger his hold got on her, and she soon found him turning her around and pushing her against a wall, his arm going to her throat. She felt tears come to her eyes as she began to find it hard to breathe, unable to kick herself out of his grasp.

"I really wouldn't do that if I were you." The tip of a sword traced along the side of the man's throat. "Let her go."

Arthur found he enjoyed walking through the city as much as he enjoyed a good romp through the forest. Both places made it extremely easy to disappear. He'd had no purpose in his walk that evening other than feeling stifled within the confines of his room.

Entertainment was hard to come by when you were at a stand-off with most residents of the building you cohabit and so Arthur headed into the streets.

He hadn't expected this.

More importantly he hadn't anticipated knowing the victim either. A white hot flash of anger shot through him as he tore his sword from its scabbard and pointed it at the bastard's throat.

Gwen had not expected any form of rescue, and did not know when Arthur had showed up. Well it would have to be him if anyone was going to help her. She knew he would not let her forget such a moment. She licked her lips, still gasping for air as the man seemed to have frozen slightly. Then he was glancing at Arthur, a smirk on his face.

"Can't you see I'm busy? Get your own whore."

Gwen could feel the man's breath on her face. Clearly even being at the point of a sword did not frighten him, his hold getting even stronger. She wouldn't last longer against this hold, she knew that, and slowly found her eyes drawing to Arthur, looking desperate. She did not care if he brought this up again, she just wanted him to help her.

Arthur didn't even give himself a moment to think before raising his sword and bring the hilt down hard over the disgusting man's head. His arm vibrated with the sword and blood oozed from the newly formed wound. The stranger wobbled, fingers spasming around Gwen's throat before he lurched forward, collapsing into her and then slid, unconscious to the ground.

"Are you all right?" Arthur asked, stepping on the man as he guided Gwen gently away from the wall. He gave the oaf a swift kick in the side out of spite and then moved over him, taking Gwen by the hand to lead her away.

Really. This place was revolting.

Gwen gasped when Arthur struck the man, pushing herself against the wall as much as she could as he fell into her before falling to the ground. When Arthur grabbed her hand she did not protest, simply looked back at the man, lying there on the ground. Realising she had yet to answer his question, taking a while to get her breath back, she looked up at him.

"I'm fine. Thank you."

She was not going to admit to him that she was terrified, she did not like being seen as weak in front of anyone.

Arthur tilted his head to look at her, really see her and his hand flew from hers to her throat, lightly inspecting the slow forming bruises with a disdainful sneer.

He should have killed the man on the spot. A lady ought to be treated with more dignity than this.

"You don't have to lie to me, Guinevere."

She let moved her head a little, knowing he wanted to see her neck. She could feel a light pain go through her skin, and knew there were bruises. This thought was only helped by the look on Arthur's face. When he told her there was no need to lie, she believed him. But that did not mean she could look him in the eye as she admitted the truth.

"I am far from fine."

Arthur slowly moved his hand from her throat to tilt her chin upward so she would meet his gaze.

"I can see that." It took a large amount of effort not to add she ought not to be going out alone. "Did know him?"

Arthur pleaded with her to deny any former connection. If there was a body found in the forest the next day, well...his conscience would be clear.

She did not struggle when he attempted to lift her chin, knowing he would win in the end. He was stronger and could easily force her to look at him if he wanted to. She almost felt ashamed, looking at him and waiting for him to scold her like a child. Of course, if he did, he would get rather stern words back from her even if he was royal.

"No, he just followed me for a moment then grabbed me."

Saying it out loud still scared her. It was as if she was just realising exactly what happened, what could of happened had Arthur not gotten there in time.

Arthur's expression hardened into fissure filled ice and it was the petrified expression on Gwen's face that held him in place instead of going back and finishing the job he'd begun. Filth like that didn't deserve a fair fight. Men like that had no honor to lose.

Shouldering his disgust and anger like a cloak and pulled Gwen close to him and began to swiftly walk them both away. He had no idea what she had been attempting to achieve with this outing, but it was well and done now and really nothing could sway Arthur's mind or feet from going back to their building.

She could see the anger in his face at her words and for a moment she was worried about what he would do. But then he was pulling her away and heading back in the direction of the building they both lived in. She walked along in silence beside him for some of the way, her eyes on the ground as she walked. After all she trusted Arthur to move her if was in the way of anything. Glancing up at him, she took a breath.

"Arthur..."

Before she lost her nerve, she went on her tip toes, ready to kiss him on the cheek in thanks.

Arthur kept moving-kept walking-away from the blackguard who'd almost...Really, Arthur had done some unforgivable things before in his life, but leaving that man alive burned.

"What?" he asked, waspish and distracted, he tilted his head toward her, unaware that she'd been moving closer and his lips grazed the corner of her mouth in the lightest of moves.

He froze.

Her eyes had closed a little before she touched skin, and when she did she froze. Opening her eyes, she realised where her lips had touched, and she quickly pulled away, her hand going to her mouth. Her eyes were wide, and suddenly she found it impossible to look at him.

"I'm sorry, Sire. I did not mean..."

She let her eyes meet his for a moment before she turned and began walking away from him, just wanting to get to her room and hide.

The faint buzzing in the back of his mind, slow-smoldering with disgust, quieted under the curious tingling along his lips. Gwen acted like Gwen. Predictably stammering and tripping over herself to apologize and slip away, but really, Arthur wasn't going to have any of that.

"Guinevere, wait."

Even if they never acknowledged, whatever accident of fate that had been, ever again, there was no way on God's earth that he was about to let Gwen just waltz off without him.

Especially not after what had just occurred not even five minutes before.

When she heard her name be called she stopped walking. She knew there was no point in pretending she had not heard him, he would catch up eventually. He was far too fast for her to keep away from him, he would be able to stop her.

She kept her back to him, still not able to look at him. Why did he want her to wait? The building was not too far away, about five minutes. She could get there quickly and he knew how to get there so he did not exactly need her there.

Catching up to her hardly expended any energy at all, but even Arthur, who had lived with Morgana for far too many years, recognized the stubborn, willful set to Gwen's chin and knew if he said the wrong thing it would only make things worse.

"Let me escort you back." And then, if she chose, they would never speak again. Arthur refused, quite rightly, to let her go back by herself that evening, even with the building only a short distance away.

When he caught up she still refused to look at him. She was still so embarrassed about what had happened, even if it was an accident. And then there was that slight churning sensation in her stomach. She may be embarrassed but part of her did not regret the accident. And that just made her feel worse.

"Of course," she said quietly.

She did not wait for him to start walking, just started heading in the direction of the building. It really would not help that his room was barely that far away from her.

Arthur followed, one step behind her, lost in his own mind as he was certain she was in her own.

He was just as certain he would be facing imminent wrath from Morgana should Gwen say anything.

And she would. It was what girls did. And Gwen, despite not being a lady, being more than proficient at forging weaponry, was, in fact, a girl.

The walk back to the building finished in thankful lack of activity and Arthur merely dropped her by her door before heading to his own room to sort out his thoughts. And plan a convenient escape plan. Just in case.
