Entry tags:claire winchester, john winchester

WHO: John Winchester & Claire Winchester
WHAT: John wants to make things right with his sons. He and Claire discuss possible ways to make him seem like not such a crap dad.
WHEN: January 30th; Afternoon
WHERE: The Video Store
RATING: PG
STATUS: In Progress

There was a lot of things that John Winchester was good at, but there were so, so many more than just flew right on by his radar. And realizing when he'd made a mistake was one of the huge blind spots that he suffered through more often than not. Hindsight was always his worst enemy, but it was his stubborn pride that more often than not made it impossible for him to fix things even when he realized that he'd made a mess of things. He could have fixed stuff with Sam, apologized, at least patched some of the holes that he'd blown in their relationship long before things got as heated as they did. And as it was, he only seemed to be making things worse with Dean now by doing what he'd always done.

He needed to take a different tact, but as much as he might want to do that, he was at a complete loss as to how to go about it. Help wasn't something that John sought out very often, but approaching his daughter-in-law (as bizarre a thought as it was that he had one of those now) had seemed like a potential way to go about at least repairing some of the damage that had been done. He wasn't a perfect man, after all. He had his flaws and his faults, but he wanted to be a good father.

He just needed to figure out how to do that now.

Stepping into the video store, John felt oddly at ease. With the way things had advanced in the years since his death, this was familiar, homey, old fashioned but not in a yet outdated way. Glancing around, idly wandering the shelves near the front for a moment, John turned to the counter the second that he felt comfortable enough to actually approach the young blond. God, she looked young. It was still something he was having a hard time getting his head around, but it seemed like that feeling never really ended.

When John had first contacted her, Claire hadn't been sure what to expect. On one hand, she had hoped he was looking to fix a few of the issues that had popped up since he'd arrived in the city, but on the other hand she had half-expected the text to be some drunken ramble about how she'd turned his son against him or something equally insane. After all, when dealing with Winchesters, such things were always a possibility.

Fortunately, though, he had seemed far more interested in doing what she had hoped and trying to fix things. As far as she was concerned, the fact that he'd contacted her in the first place was a good indication that he might actually be serious about it, too. Whether or not he was serious enough to actually show up at her store and discuss matters face to face with her, though, was something she hadn't been too sure about. Until, of course, he stepped through the door. At that point, she was pretty sure he was completely serious about patching things up, which meant she would do what she could to help him with that.

First, though, she had to deal with the customers milling about.

Fortunately, two of the three customers were regulars and were easily helped. The third, meanwhile, browsed about for a bit before finally selecting a few titles. A bit of small talk later and, finally, the store was cleared out save for Claire and her father-in-law. Whether or not he'd been waiting for that moment to approach her, or he'd simply been trying to work up the nerve and just had really good timing, she wasn't sure, but either way by the time the bell above the door had dinged to indicate the final customer was leaving, John was approaching the counter.

With a welcoming smile, Claire finished organizing the money in the register and closed the drawer before turning her full attention to him. "I wasn't sure you were going to make it," she admitted simply. "But I'm glad you did."
