The laugh didn't much fool Sirius, and the shaking hands were impossible to go unnoticed. Sirius knew how much Remus hated to let his emotions show, and right now, they were coming in loud and clear. He wanted to tell Remus that it was alright to break a little... that actually, he was on the verge himself. That even heaven itself- if that's truly where Sirius had been- could not bring Sirius true happiness while Remus was not there by his side. And that this moment was leaving him just as disbelieving, just as unsteady, just as desperate to hold on. Just as pathetic.
But there was that stinging behind his eyelids to consider. And he knew if he said all that aloud, it would undoubtedly turn the stinging into actual tears. He wasn't much for that sort of thing either. And so he decided to humour Remus, just for now. "You're always pathetic," he teased, though there couldn't have been more affection in the insult if he'd tried. "A great, pathetic, book-molesting, chocolate-hoarding poof."
Following Remus's suggestion, he tugged his hand and led them to the nearest chairs. "I should have been more careful," he protested, shaking his head. "I should have dodged her blow." He should have done a lot of things he hadn't, and should not have done a lot of things he had. So was the story of Sirius Black's life.
