who | Irene Adler and Q
what | A "random" encounter.
when | Lunchtime.
where | City Hall.
rating | TBD
status | In Progress

If there was one thing that could be said about Irene Adler, it was that she was resourceful. So resourceful, in fact, that when most people only had a plan, and possibly a contingency one set up just in case, she tended to have a half dozen or so. Living in Colligo, even being with Sherlock, hadn't changed that fact either. So when Moriarty had arrived, and Sherlock had immediately fallen back into the same cat and mouse game with him, Irene had realized quickly that she would be wise to start putting another plan to keep her connections in high places intact. After all, not having Sherlock about meant that there was every chance the tenuous truce she shared with the man's brother would be broken. And were that to happen, Irene would need an ally in City Hall. Well. One who wasn't Pepper Potts, at any rate. Which was nice, being friends with the woman who was sleeping with the mayor, but relationships were funny things and Irene wasn't betting her sole connection to the local government on one. No. She was going to do what she did best, go out there, and find another way in. Just in case.

And she had just the person in mind, too. The newest addition to the staff worked just fine for what she had in mind. Q was young, intelligent, and impressionable while still very much possessing a mind of his own. He would be a challenge, true, but not one she couldn't overcome.

Of course, she still had to meet him. Which meant arranging a way for their paths to cross, in what seemed like a random happenstance, then making sure there was a reason for them to continue chatting after. It took a few days of considering which route to take, but finally she settled on one and arrived at City Hall the next afternoon ready to get started. Carrying a bag of take-out from a restaurant Pepper had mentioned a few days before, Irene wasted no time in approaching the security station in the lobby.

Two minutes and a few smiles later, and she'd managed to distract the guard long enough to get a glimpse at the security displays. Then she was on her way through the lobby, into one of the lifts, and straight up to the floor where the mayor's office was located. Her heels clicked softly against the floor as she made her way down the long corridor, the bag of food swinging lightly. She kept her movements slow and casual, knowing she had to time this perfectly if she didn't want to arouse suspicion.

Luckily fate was on her side and, just as she reached the mayor's office, her target stepped through the door. Going still, Irene's eyes widened slightly as she gasped, as though a bit surprised to suddenly be face to face with someone else. Then she smiled. "Afternoon," she greeted him, her tone friendly and sincere. A brief pause, as Irene's eyes darted back and forth a bit before settling back on the young man before her. "I don't suppose Ms. Potts is in there, is she? I could have sworn she said our lunch was today but I can't seem to reach her."

Q was still settling in, both to life in Colligo in general and to his new job in particular. He quite liked working for Mycroft Holmes, different as his new job was from the position he'd held at MI-6. Though his job was arguably simpler, it was still challenging and he was still working for someone who was, without question, brilliant. It was better than, say, working as a computer programmer for some shop. He was fairly certain he would have gone mental in that case. Mycroft reminded him of M in many ways. The first M he'd known, not her successor. She'd been the one to recruit him, to see his potential, and he saw that same sort of recognition of the capabilities of others in this man. It was a good quality for a leader to possess.

Still, he was still figuring out his place in the workings of Colligo's government, because it was different than anything else he'd ever been a part of. He liked it, no question there, but it was definitely an example of expectations differing sharply from reality. He liked Mycroft and his assistant, Pepper, but it was odd to think that the two were in a relationship. Just as it was odd to think of the head of security and...well, he wasn't entirely certain what Clint actually did...being involved. It seemed almost unprofessional, except that they were all terribly professional about it. Then there was the fact that their crises were apparently very different from what he was used to. It was all a bit of an adjustment.

He'd been stopping by Mycroft's office to drop off some files on some projects he'd been given upon joining the staff, wanting to give the man a report on his progress, and he was surprised to see an unfamiliar face as he left. The woman was quite pretty, to be sure, but he wasn't used to running into strangers here, and it left him a bit confused as to how to react. Then she spoke, and it suddenly made sense. Of course she was someone who knew Pepper or Darcy. It did make sense, and he felt a little embarrassed that he hadn't considered that before. Of course, Pepper wasn't there, so that still made things a little awkward.

"I...um..." he trailed off, then started over. "I think that one or the other of you might have had the date wrong. Ms. Potts is across town in some meetings and isn't due back until late this afternoon." He really did feel bad having to disappoint the woman. She seemed very nice and he knew from experience how disappointing it could be to find oneself stood up for lunch. Of course, it was usually Eve being disappointed with him after he forgot another of their lunches while engrossed in a project. "Would you like me to tell her that you stopped by when she comes back?"
