Lived with no other thought than to love and be loved by me...(Closed to Annie)
WHO: Annie Odair and Finnick Odair
WHEN: Coinciding with Annie's arrival
WHERE: Starts on the streets outside the library, but will update if it changes
RATING: TBD
STATUS: Incomplete

Finnick had never run so fast, not even when he was running for his life in the Games. But in a sense, he was doing just that - running towards his life, towards the only one he'd ever loved, towards the girl who knew all of his secrets and still loved him.

Annie.

No time could be enough with her. Even if he had lived to be an old, old man, he would have died with the regret that there couldn't be one more night spent in her arms.

He ran down the street, the pavement eating at his bare feet, but he couldn't have cared less. What mattered now was that he find her, that he be reunited with her, that he make sure that she was safe and that they were together again.

And there, on the street, he saw her, and all the energy drained from his legs for a brief moment, like it had in Thirteen as he stared at her...and...a baby. He had heard it crying over the phone, but it hadn't registered, so great was his joy at hearing her voice.

God...was it...?

As he closed the distance between them, he sped up even more until he nearly crashed into her, swinging her and the baby around once before leaning her against the nearest wall and kissing her with every bit of love in his heart.

Then he pulled back for a moment, his face glowing as he looked into the familiar sea-green eyes of his son, and then up at Annie.

"Annie...how...how long?" Since he'd been dead. Since he'd been gone. He didn't know exactly what he was asking, but he had to know, anyway. Annie would know the right answer. She always did.

[The title is from Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe]

Annie was still processing not being in Panem anymore. More importantly, she was processing Finnick being alive wherever it was that she found herself and their newborn son. She'd felt like she had to go through the pain of losing him all over again when she gave birth to little Finnick, because he wasn't there to see their son for the first time. Yet she was happy, because she would always have a little piece of Finnick.

And now, she was in a strange place and he was here. She had dreamed about seeing him alive again so many times. Though there was the smallest part of her that was afraid that she'd wake up...she knew that it was too real. He was alive. She'd been taken someplace with their son and he was here.

Happy tears streamed down Annie's face when she saw Finnick, standing in front of her alive. She kissed him back fiercely, with every ounce of love in her body, like she was going to explode from it.

She paused when he asked her how long he'd been dead for. "...Eight months." She leaned into him, pressing her head up against his chest, the baby nestled between them. "I've missed you each day since."

Finnick held her, not trying to check the tears streaming down his cheeks as she found her place in his arms, that natural, comfortable place where she fit. It was how he'd known, finally. She had...fit. Right there, against his heart, there was a place for her, as if whoever had made the sea and the stars had made them as two pieces that couldn't be whole and complete without each other. Who, separate, were broken and afraid, but together were something so much more.

There'd been so many by the time he'd met her. None that he'd wanted, none that he'd chosen, and because of that, he held in his heart that he was a virgin when he met her. And he was, in every way that mattered. She was the only one he'd ever chosen to be with, the only one he'd ever chosen to share his body with. And that had to mean something.

He shuddered with the emotion and buried his face in her hair, finally weeping against her, releasing all the tears that had built up inside him at the thought that he would be here indefinitely without her.

"I'm so sorry," he said, although he knew it would never be enough, could never be enough for what he'd done to her. "Annie, I'm so sorry I left you."

He kissed her and turned his attention for a moment to the baby.

"Can I...hold him?"

Annie leaned into him, finding her comfort in that warm, safe, familiar place. She was only starting to realize back home, that he was gone and she'd have to live without him forever...but that didn't matter, now. He was here, and she would never have to live without him again.

Back in Panem, Annie had known that she would never love another like she'd loved him. He was the only one for her, the only one who understood her completely. And truthfully, Annie had never really noticed anyone in the way she'd noticed Finnick. She had given every little piece of her to him that she could, and there was nothing she could give to anyone else, and she didn't want anyone else. Just him.

She muttered soothing sounds in his ear as weeped against her, her own tears still streaming freely down her face.

"That...that doesn't matter now," she said, clinging to him. "You're here. You came back to me....just like you always promised you would."

She kissed him, managing a small smile.

"Of course you can. He is your son. I...I named him after you." She passed their son over to him, who had stopped crying, and was looking at his parents with wide, curious eyes.

Finnick took the baby, his strong hands never before having felt so large or so rough. He met his son's eyes - sea-green like his own - feeling something greater than awe when he held him. He appeared the perfect blend of himself and Annie, something that was both of them...and yet a great deal more. The perfect result of their love.

And suddenly, his heart constricted with grief as he thought of all the parents who had held their child in their arms, just like this, had felt the same awe he was feeling now, this love and wonder, and who had been forced to watch their children die on live television for someone's entertainment.

He had not understood that cruelty, that grief, until now. And holding his son against his chest, he wept bitterly for the cruelty of a worldwide could have done that, wishing his strong arms could protect his son forever, from any pain and any suffering. That he would never know any of the things his parents had known.

He looked at Annie through his tears, knowing that she understood.

"He's perfect. And we will keep him safe here."

Annie just watched Finnick hold their son. A smile crossed her face. She was filled with joy. Joy that her son would get to know his father. And joy that they found themselves in a world where there were no Hunger Games. No being forced to watch your children fight to the death on television.

Annie didn't know if she could handle her son being forced to go through something like that. She could barely handle it when she went through it, and she didn't want to be forced to watch her own baby go through something like that.

She smiled at Finnick, her happiness radiating through her tears.

"I know," she said. "We'll keep him safe, and we'll be happy here. We'll be a family. Right?"

"Of course we will, Annie. Always and forever."

They had been since he'd first fallen in love with her, surprising even himself. At that point, he'd been so close to an abyss of shame and despair, and was convinced that nobody could see him as anything except what the Capitol had forced him to be.

But Annie...she'd seen past that, to the wounded little boy who was frightened and afraid, and taken him in her arms and heart forever.

Nobody would ever understand how profoundly he loved her, and he would never even try to explain why. Because there were no words for it, no possible explanation. He loved her, and that was enough.

"How old is he? He's so tiny..."

"He's only a few hours old," Annie said, smiling as she watched Finnick hold their son in his arms. It filled Annie with an overwhelming joy, just knowing that little Finnick would be able to know his father. And that they'd never have to worry about their son being forced to fight to the death on national television.

"I had only given birth to him a few hours ago...and then somehow, we were both taken here."

"I'm..."

He took a deep breath, needing to ask her something that he'd come to assume, but didn't really want to say out loud.

"I'm not okay...back home. Am I?"

Annie shook her head.

"No." She put a hand on his cheek. "But that doesn't matter right now. We're together again. That matters."
