Who: Sophia and Carol Peletier
What: some nice mother-daughter time, and Carol gets to see Sophia's school
When: backdated to this morning
Where: starting in their dorm room
Rating: G
Status: in progress

She had gotten a full night's rest in her own bed, safe and sound within the walls of her and Sophia's new home. Now she was in the kitchen, quietly packing her daughter's lunch without any fear of being attacked by walkers or Ed. The sense of freedom and peace she was feeling was also surreal to Carol. It was what she had always wanted for her and Sophia, even before the zombie uprising occurred. Funny how the two of them had to leave their own world completely to find this much-needed security.

"Sophia? Come on, honey, or we might be late." Placing the peanut butter and jelly sandwich into a plastic bag, she carefully tucked it inside the lunch bag along with a couple of cookies cookies, juice and chips. "I've got your lunch ready in the kitchen." Now with the lunch bag all prepared, Carol returned her attention to the pancakes she had made and plated two of them for Sophia.

Although Sophia had always held out hope that her momma would show up in the city that was quickly becoming her new home, she had never really expected it to happen. And yet out of the blue, just like that, she had arrived. Sophia still had to pinch herself, sometimes, to make sure it was all really real and that she wasn't just imagining it. Not that she was prone to living in a world of make believe but it really did seem too good to be true most of the time.

Which was why mornings like this were so important to her. Sure, it was just a normal sort of thing - breakfast and talking before heading off to school for the day - but it was that very sense of normalcy that made it so great. So when her momma called out for her to hurry up, Sophia wasted no time in doing as she was told and did so quite happily in fact.

Still working to get her boots on, Sophia half-stumbled, half-hopped out of her room and down the hallway. She managed to get her foot into the boot just as she stepped into the kitchen, finally straightening upright and giving Carol a smile. "Morning," she said happily as she sat down at the table. "The pancakes smell real good."

Setting the plate of pancakes down on the table beside the little container of maple syrup, Carol smiled and placed an affectionate hand on Sophia's head as she sat down at the table. It amazed her the transformation she saw in her daughter, who had been such a quiet girl back home. Quiet, but strong, Carol thought to herself as she went to the counter and poured herself a mug of coffee. Now Sophia seemed like any other girl her age, bright, smiling and energetic, and that made Carol love this place even more.

"Eat up then. There's also more pancakes if you want." Leaning against the counter, she happily watched her daughter quietly for a moment of two, noticing the new clothes she was wearing and feeling grateful for everyone who had taken such good care of Sophia for all this time. "So what's the school like here? I was thinking that maybe this morning I can walk with you to the school and have a look around."

Sophia wasted no time in diving into the pancakes, crossing her legs at the ankles and idly swinging her feet to and fro. Chewing thoughtfully at the question her momma asked her, she reached for her glass of milk as she replied, "School's real nice, here. Different, but nice." And different, really, was a bit of an understatement. Back home, kids couldn't do what some of the kids could do here. The teachers couldn't either.

"Charles Xavier is the man who owns the school. It's a really big place but he's really nice and so are all the other folks who work there. We go on lots of trips, too," she continued to exclaim, finally pausing long enough to enjoy a few more bites of pancakes before speaking again. When she did, she rested her fork on the edge of her plate and turned her attention directly onto Carol.

"I know we don't really get a choice," she began softly, blue eyes earnestly meeting her mother's. "But if we did... I wouldn't want to leave here ever."

"Me too. This is a nice place with good people, and it'll give both of us a chance to have a normal life again." Carol knew what awaited Sophia if they ever have to return to post-apocalyptic Georgia, and living here would give her daughter the chance to grow up and live her life. "I only wish the others could come here too."

She took a seat opposite of Sophia at the table. "Carl would have loved it here too. To go to school again and have a steady place to live in. I'm sure Lori would like it here as well, especially with Rick around. But from the sound of things, the school here sounds great. I would really love to meet your teachers and classmates sometime."

Taking another sip of her coffee, she smiled at the outfit that Sophia was wearing this morning. "I know that's new. Did Daryl take you shopping?" In all honesty, if she went by what she knew of him, Carol couldn't picture Daryl doing such a thing. Then again, she supposed that there could be a first time for anything.

"Carl was here for a while. His mom and Shane, too." Sophia paused as she considered this, her brow furrowing slightly as she stabbed her last bit of pancakes with her fork. "Shane was talking about how Carl got shot out looking for me." She didn't meet her mother's gaze as she spoke of that fateful event. She wasn't stupid. Nobody had told her if they'd found her or not, but she knew how folks looked at her and that was enough. Still. Not hearing it spoken out loud kept it from being real, somehow. So she didn't bring it up, instead filling her mouth with food and chewing slowly and thoughtfully.

Once she'd swallowed it down with another drink of milk, she finally looked to Carol once more. The corners of her mouth quirked a bit as she glanced down at her own outfit. "That was Cordelia," she explained as she looked back to her mother. "She's real nice, and funny too. She helped me get new clothes and some other stuff. Daryl said it was best that way." She smiled at the memory then stood, picking up her plate and carrying it over to the sink.

"Do you think we could stop by and see Daryl soon?" she asked quietly. She missed having him around all the time and worried about him, besides.

The fact that Carl, Lori and Shane had been here for previously for a time was unsettling for Carol, since that meant that there was still the possibility that any one of them could be sent back home at any time. That was something that she did not want to have happen to Sophia, since in this place, Sophia would be able to live the life that was denied to her back in Georgia. For a moment, she watched her daughter quietly. We did find you in the end, she could have said, although Carol was afraid that her expression and tone would betray the sadness and grief that overwhelmed her when she saw her little girl walk out of that barn. In the end, Carol decided that it would be best to say nothing at all. In a way, not recounting her memories from the morning of that barn massacre made it seem like nothing more than a bad dream, and she was more than happy to keep things that way.

"Well, she did an excellent job picking out new clothes for you," she smiled, yet deep down inside, that made Carol feel a pang of guilt, to have someone else do for her daughter what she had never had the nerve to do herself during all of those years living under Ed's thumb. Glancing down at her half-finished mug of coffee, she regretted how she had always accepted his abuse instead of trying to find a way to get her and Sophia away from him. Now that she thought of it, had it not been for the walkers, she and Sophia would probably still be there, living with him. Seeing how happy her daughter was to get new clothes, to be taken out shopping, it made Carol feel bad to have never done that with her.

"Sophia? I'm sorry. I'm so...sorry how I...didn't look after you as well as I should have," she said, the words hard to come by. "I was too scared back home. I tried my best to protect you, but---" If she was to continue, Carol was afraid that she would choke up, which was the last thing she wanted Sophia to see. So instead, she mustered up a little smile. "Things will be different now. I promise you."

Getting up from her seat, she went and emptied the remains of her coffee down the sink, then began washing the mug and plate. "Of course we can go see Daryl. How about after school?" She placed the washed items in the drying rack. "It feels different, doesn't it? To have everyone living on their own. I miss seeing him around. I've gotten so used to seeing him around everyday. He works over at the...Roadhouse, is it? We can stop by there after I come to get you at school. I can also have a look around the city and see about finding some work too."
