Finding Employment
Who: Peeta Mellark and Melinda Halliwell
What: A job interview.
Where: 3.14159
When: 7am Thursday morning
Rating: PG
Status: In progress

Peeta had risen early, as was custom for anyone who was born the son of a baker. He had baked some cheesebiscuits to allay his nerves (and as a sort of edible portfolio), made his way to the pie shop, and was waiting outside when it opened.

He hoped very much he could get this job - if Katniss was planning to go to school, he would need the funds to support them.

Hands in his pockets, he waited for Melinda, hoping that the plate of biscuits he carried would at least make a good impression on her.

Melinda had been in the shop since 5 in the morning. She knew that she needed to make some new pies to lay out and then of course slice some up for people to purchase. Then she needed to put the whole pies in the fridge and in the display. She loved to bake, her mom had taught her well. Having flour everywhere she listened to her music and she danced as she made the pies.

Just then she heard the door and she began to clean up her mess. After all if she was going to show the new employer around, she wanted the place to not look like a tornado had gone through it. Picking up and wiping things down she came out from the kitchen.

Wiping her hands on her apron she welcomed him with a smile. "You must be Peeta. Hi, I'm Melinda, how are you this morning?" She had asked.

Peeta smiled softly as he came inside, smelling the familiar and comforting smells of a bakery for the first time in months. He was nervous - he'd never applied for a job before and never really expected to. His job prospects, before he'd been reaped, had been simply taking over his father's bakery, when his father felt old enough to retire.

"I'm...well," he said softly, his accent rather unidentifiable, but something resembling a modern-day south-eastern Kentucky accent. "I brought these for you...couldn't sleep and I was, well, nervous."

He sat the biscuits on the counter, shoving his hands in his pockets.

Melinda smiled over at him, this was going to be really simple. She wanted to know a little about his background and then would show him around and then if he wanted to start right away he could. She was excited that someone was interested in working in the shop, she hated working for herself at times.

"That's good then." She then motioned over to a table with a pad and paper with some questions that she had for him. "Oh thank you, these look really good." She set them on the counter and then motioned for them to sit at a table. "Please, have a seat."

She sat down and took off her apron. "I promise that this will be harmless, just a few easy questions and then I'll show you around."

"I guess I could start with, tell me about your background, how did you get yourself into baking?" She asked.

His background. He assumed she meant the part before the Games, before his life had taken off in a thousand different unexpected directions. Before he had nearly died and had his mind nearly destroyed by the government...

With a wry smile that hinted at some of the darkness in his mind, he took a seat, leaning forward to clasp his hands on the table.

"I was born in District 12, in my home world of Panem. It might be the future of Earth, I don't know. They didn't teach us things like that in school. District 12 was a poor District, far from the capitol. A coal-mining district. The Capitol needed our coal, so except for a great deal of intimidation they basically left us alone."

At first, anyway.

"My father owned the bakery in District 12. His father had owned it, and his father before him. I don't know what they did before that, before the War. Anyway, I grew up in the bakery, helping my father, almost from the time I could walk. As I got older, he taught me his secrets, and I also discovered that I had some talent in making and decorating cakes."

He shrugged.

"I always expected to take over from my father, since my brothers seemed to have little interest in it. It's what I've done my whole life, and it makes me feel...connected with my father, now that he's gone."

She sat there and listened to him. He had quite the interesting background indeed. Nodding her head as she got into what he was actually saying, she knew that she would be hiring this guy, he seemed to fit just right in and maybe she could put more things other than pie on the menu, maybe once he got his feet wet so to speak with the pie shop.

"Wow, and I thought that my family was different. I have never heard of the place called Panem. Sounds interesting, except for the whole poor thing. I'm sorry that you had to live that way."

As she went through her notes she then gave a sigh. "You seem qualified for this place. And I'm sure that all your great baking will get this place filled with customers." She started to laugh. "I'm sure that we will be able to put a couple more things on our menu besides pie. So are there any questions that you may have?"

Peeta shrugged. He personally hadn't been poor by District 12 standards, but it had been a poor district overall, and he had seen very little opulence before his visit to the Capitol.

"Panem is...hard. District 12 was destroyed in the rebellion, and my...Katniss and I are living in what's left. My family was killed when the bakery was destroyed and...well..."

He shook his head, not wanting to talk about this at all. He smiled when she told him he sounded qualified, a happy smile on his lips.

"Great! Questions...uh, no, not really. I'm sure I will as I get to work, but for now...yeah, I just want a job. Katniss wants to go to school, and we'll have to eat somehow."

Looking at him as he was explaining where he came from. Then realizing that maybe she had said or asked too much.

"Its okay, you don't have to go any further. I know that sometimes it can be hard to talk about something like that."

If he didn't have any questions she could at least show him around so that he knew where everything was.

"At least you guys have a set plan. I'm currently doing both school and running this place, well, I take night classes at the University but....anyway. Why don't I show you around then." She said getting up from her chair.

"That's great," he nodded, fully supporting her decision to go to school. He just never felt it necessary for himself, since he'd had marketable skills since he could remember, in something that he loved doing.

"My father taught me every aspect of running a bakery, so if you need time off, I'm sure I can take care of things a day or two."

He watched closely as she showed him around, noting where things were kept, and the way that things were done. It made sense to him, bakeries always did. They were in all ways comfortable.

"If I can save up enough money, I'd like to marry Katniss, too."

"Yeah, I mean I'm used to multitasking. My family is quite famous back home." She looked at him as she was walking him around the shop.

"I will definitely take you up on that. Sometimes I don't think I have much of a social life." She laughed.

"So these are the coolers of course, you will find whipped cream, ice cream for pie and ice cream, and we also keep our dough in the fridge as well. And of course other things to keep cool, and we put extra pies in here too." She said as she pointed. "Those cupboards are cans of fruit for the fruit pies and such. Our utensils of course are on the counter tops."

"Awww that's really so sweet. Pay will be about $8.25 an hour, is that alright?" She asked.

Peeta nodded as she explained everything, and showed him where everything was located. It all made sense, and he had very little to ask.

When she told him the pay, he simply shrugged. The numbers meant very little to him - he didn't know how many hours a week he'd be working, he didn't know how much that would add up to, or how much he needed. But he liked her on first meeting, and assumed that her terms would be fair.

"Yes, that sounds fine," he smiled. "When can I start?"

She really had no idea what she was doing, in fact she just blew through everything, even though he had eyes to see where everything was and went.

Thinking that she would let him work 8 hours a day, she would at least have help during the day. She was so glad that there was one more person in the shop to help her out. Now she would have someone to make pies while she handled all of the office work and managed the cash register.

"Great, well, you can start today or tomorrow if you'd like. I thought maybe you could work 8 hour days. The shop closes at 7:00 at night, opens up at 8:00 in the morning. You can pick the time that you come in, I'm really flexible with scheduling."

Peeta smiled at her.

"I'm ready to start now, if you want me. And I'd prefer mornings, really. I get up early anyway. Habit, I guess."

He'd always been up at five am at home, in order to help his father with the breakfast rolls. He'd never really fallen out of that practice.

"Great" She smiled at him. "Let me just go in back and get your uniform and an apron." She then went into the back and got a Blue T-shirt that had the symbol for Pi, since that was the name of the shop anyway. And then grabbed an apron for him.

Coming out she handed it to him. "You can change in the back area or there's restrooms over there. After you come back out I'll show you how to clock in and out." She said.

She was really happy that she had hired some help and he would make a great asset to the place.

Peeta nodded and took the shirt and apron, going into the bathroom to change. It felt good to be back in an apron again, in a bakery, around things that were familiar and comfortable.

When he came back out, he grinned, pushing his blonde curls out of his eyes.

"Do I look okay?"

It wasn't one of Cinna's amazing costumes, but in a lot of ways, he liked it better.

As he was in the bathroom changing, she put her apron back on and decided to make some fruit pies to set out in the display behind the counter. Going to the fridge she grabbed the thawed out dough and the flour and began to knead it and putting flour on the dough.

Then he came out and she nodded. "Yeah it looks good."

She continued to knead the dough. "Since we won't be getting customers for an hour or so, you can help make some fruit pies if you'd like. I don't care what kind of fruit it is, just a mixture so that I can put them in the display." She then remembered something that she forgot.

"Oh, first let me show you how to clock in. All you have to do is come in here every morning. Come and grab your time card, and then all you have to do is slip it into the slot and it will punch your time on there and then you just put it back over here and then when your leaving you do the same thing and it will clock you out."

Peeta nodded.

"Do you have sugar, and thickener? And maybe some cinnamon?"

He wouldn't try to make anything complicated, not for now. There would be time for that in the future.

He nodded at her instructions about the time card, then turned to her, a grateful look in his eyes.

"Thanks for this. Really. It means a lot to be working, especially at a job I like."

"Yeah of course. Everything that you need is in that cupboard right over there." She pointed behind him.

This was really great, she wouldn't have to work alone and she knew that he would fit into this place and the routine really well.

"And I like to bake and listen to music, if there is any particular station or music that you like to listen to, feel free to bring it in. I hate working in quiet when there are no customers."

She gave him a warm smile. "Its not a problem. I'm just glad that you were able to find something that you like to do. I bet your girlfriend will be very happy." She said as she began to roll more dough.

Peeta smiled as he grabbed the ingredients out of the cupboard.

"I hope she is. It means she can go back to school, do the things she wants to do, and that's what matters to me. That Katniss be happy."

He shrugged when she spoke of the music.

"I...this is going to sound weird, but I've never really listened to much music. There weren't, well, radio stations in Panem, at least in District 12, and even if there were, the technology was way too expensive for us. So whatever you want to listen to is fine."

"Oh for what your doing for her so that she could continue her education. Its very noble of you. And its always nice when you get to do what you love to do. My mom taught me how to bake and cook and everything, but what I really want to do is be a Family Counselor, that's why I'm taking night classes." She said as she got out a pile of pie plates. It was going to be a long day but it was going to be fun.

"I like to listen to a variety of songs. Anything from oldies songs to songs from today. Some people say that I have music ADD cause I just jump from one things to another." She started to laugh as she put on the radio.

"I'll listen to anything," he smiled. How else to discover what kind of music he likes?

The baking was familiar and comfortable, he hardly had to think as he worked.

"Now that I have a job, I think I'll ask her to marry me."

"Well, great! I think you and I are going to make a great team. I can already tell. And if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask, even if you need to take a day off or anything. Everyone needs a break from work every once in a while. Just let me know." She said as she took a drink from her bottle of water she had laying on the counter.

"That is really awesome. Let me offer you the first congratulations." She said smiling.

"Well, she hasn't said 'yes' yet," he blushed. "And, well, she's said in the past that she never wants to get married. So I may be coming in tomorrow pretty disappointed."

He shrugged and smiled at her.

"But I have good feelings about it, and now that I've got a job and can support her...well...might as well try, you know? Are you married?"

"I know that, I am sure that she will say yes. I get a little ahead of myself. Young love is just so magical, its great that you found someone" She sighed, "You won't be coming in here disappointed. But you will never know until you ask her though." She shrugged.

"Exactly, that's all you can do. And if she says no and has a good reason you can push forward and still work things out as a couple." She then shook her head, "Oh no, I'm as single as they come. I've had boyfriends, and I was engaged, once. But it didn't really work out."

"I've never loved anyone but Katniss in my life. And...things were better a year ago, two years ago. But the past two years - the Games, and then the Rebellion, and all the things they did to me...they really haven't helped. It's been hard. But I think it also pulls things into perspective, and makes you think hard about what's really important. So maybe I have a chance."

He smiled at her.

"You'll find someone."

Nodding her head and listening as she was putting some pies together she sighed. "Yeah, you know I miss my family so much and I wonder what they are doing now, but I also believe that this place is letting me have a normal life." She then wanted to ask him a question, "So you mention these Games, what are the Games? If its going to be so hard to answer you don't have to, I was just curious."

"Yeah well, this guy was from back home. I'm too busy here to even find love. Between school, running things here, I just like to go home and put on a good sports game, I've dated a few people back home but they all turned out to be dem.....really bad people that wanted to get after my family."

Peeta visibly bristled at the mention of the Games, blinking as the doctored memories flooded his mind and he desperately tried to sort them. He swallowed, keeping his eyes focused on his work, and not on her.

"The Hunger Games," he started in a soft voice. "Were the Capitol's way of showing us that they were in charge. They started after the Dark Days, when the Districts revolted against the Capitol, and had to be put down. As a way of showing us that they could do with us whatever they pleased, the Capitol began taking two children between the ages of twelve and eighteen - a boy and a girl - putting us in an arena and forcing us to fight to the death. And every moment of it, every bloody, horrible moment of it, was televised. We were nearly forced to treat it like a game, to cheer when our friends were being butchered. It was...barbaric."

The last word he spat, gathering himself before continuing.

"I was sixteen when I was reaped. So was Katniss. I'm not particularly strong or physical, and I knew I didn't have a chance to survive. I didn't want to, if it involved hurting her. So I took it upon myself to do whatever I had to do to make sure Katniss survived."

He shook his head, closing his eyes and clenching the table as the results of his hijacking briefly overcame him.

She continued to work as he was talking. If it was going to be too difficult for him to tell, she didn't want him to tell the story. She was just trying to make small talk but not wanting to be awkward at the same time.

This was just a terrible thing that he had to go through, along with this Katniss girl. She knew all too well about battles but to go through something like that, she could clearly tell that he was getting uncomfortable.

"I'm really sorry that you had to go through all of that. It sounds really awful, I'm sorry for asking that question as well. It sounds way too personal for something coming out of my mouth."

Placing a hand on his shoulder she sighed. "But know that now you guys are here and you can make a fresh start. The games are all in the past now and you can live without having to worry about anything like what you guys went through."

"No...that's actually part of the point - it wasn't personal at all. There were cameras everywhere, recording everything, ready to broadcast our last horrible moments to our loved ones back home. The whole thing is televised. It's a great spectacle, a holiday, almost. A holiday of watching a whole bunch of kids die."

He shook his head, pinching the crust a little more than was perhaps necessary - but it was very necessary to him.

"But we...we got rid of it in the end, for all it cost us."
