WHO: Abby and Jane
WHAT: The resident ickle!vampires meet in person.
WHEN: Not long after this.
WHERE: Apartment #510A.
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

If Abby had known she was going to be getting a roommate so soon after moving into the apartment she'd been given, she might not have moved in at all. It was one thing, after all, to stay with someone that she knew - with someone she had hand-picked, like back home - and quite another to suddenly be saddled with another person that she knew very little about. However, she hadn't known in advance and, with the sun somewhat low in the sky but still present and therefore dangerous to her, there wasn't much she could do to escape the inevitable meeting that was about to take place.

Fortunately, at least, she wasn't a messy person by nature. It probably helped that she didn't have very much stuff to start with. Aside from a handful of puzzles stacked neatly in the corner of the living room, some books on the bookshelves, and a few DVDs beside the television, there wasn't much of an indication anyone lived there at all. Yes, she had her toiletry items in the bathroom and her clothes hung neatly in the closet in her bedroom, but those doors were pulled shut and, even if Jane did wind up in either of them, she certainly wouldn't have reason to complain about any sort of mess when clearly there wasn't one.

The windows, on the other hand, were a different story entirely.

One of the very first things Abby had done upon moving into the apartment was figure out a way to block out the deadly sunlight. Blankets had been her initial, temporary fix, followed a day or two later by thick curtains. Then she had finally gotten on her PDA and started researching her issue, eventually coming across what turned out to be a perfect solution that was even affordable. And now, five days after having left Damon and Caroline's, the windows and patio doors of her apartment were covered in a dark-colored paint that kept the sunlight out but, with the lights on, really wasn't much darker than a thick curtain would have made the place. Simply a lot safer.

Of course, while Abby was quite pleased with herself for having made her home as safe for her as possible, she knew that the new arrival by the name of Jane might not be so thrilled. Fortunately, Abby hadn't painted the windows in the other bedroom. Even if her reasons for that hadn't been in anticipation of a stranger moving in but rather in the hopes that Owen might show up someday and want a room where he could look at the sunlight while she was asleep, at least it would provide Jane with something similar. However she worried that there would be something said about the living room area being blacked out and, frankly, wasn't sure what she'd do if that were the case.

Hearing the front door open, Abby told herself that she would just have to stay strong no matter what. Then she carefully marked her place in the book she'd been reading, set it on the coffee table, and rose from the couch to wait for Jane to enter.

Jane was not pleased with the idea of having some stranger for a flatmate. If she had to do something so ridiculous as live among humans, she would have preferred to do so with Alec. Or Aro. The former would be better, but the latter would be easier. Surely people would question a pair of children living alone. Then again, perhaps they wouldn't. After all, she had been assigned an apartment with another girl her own age. Or rather, the age she appeared. She wondered about Abby, that she was living alone. Usually humans responded to a child alone, insisting on taking care of it. Or that was what observation had taught her. It was remarkably easy to catch her prey by playing on their sympathies, in those instances when she even had to. It made her wonder if, perhaps, Abby was no more a child than she was.

In spite of the fact that she was told vampires were open about their nature within this city, she still kept the hood of her cloak up and her hands covered by her sleeves as she made her way down the street. She didn't trust these people yet, and she would not take them at their word until she was sure about them. Discretion was sometimes the best course, and she was not going to out herself without a clear idea of the consequences. No, she would keep her nature closely guarded until she was sure what would happen were she to reveal it. That was, unless the Cullens ruined that for her. Then she would simply murder them all.

Entering the apartment, she was immediately intrigued. The apartment was neat, which was certainly a bonus. She hated mess and clutter. But it was the windows that really drew her attention. They were blacked out with paint to keep the sunlight out, but didn't detract from the room or make it noticeably darker. That would certainly be useful if humans found their way in. It would be hard to keep her secret if she was sparkling for anyone to see just because it happened to be day time. She slipped off her cloak, hanging it up, and made her way over to the windows with a look of curiosity. Now she was certain Abby wasn't a child. No child would have thought of something so ingenious.

"How clever," she said, tapping gently at the glass. She was careful of her strength and didn't cause the slightest bit of damage. "I find myself in the unusual position of of being impressed." She turned and favored Abby with a small smile that reached her crimson eyes. "I had my doubts, but now I feel that this could turn out to be quite the successful arrangement."

In the end, it was her meeting Edward Cullen face to face that allowed Abby to instantly recognize Jane for what she truly was. Sure, the crimson eyes were a giveaway that the girl was anything but human. But it was ultimately her scent that erased any doubts Abby had and immediately told her what she'd wondered from the onset.

Jane was a vampire. Similar to Edward but also different. Anything further Abby would have to find out on her own, but just knowing that the roommate she'd been given wasn't a human girl definitely helped put her a bit more at ease. At least in some ways. In other ways, she found herself even more uncertain than before because, if there was one thing she had learned since arriving in Colligo, there were many differences between vampires from various realities and not all of those differences were compatible with some of her own ways.

Still. So far, things were going smoothly enough and Abby was hardly going to press her luck by greeting Jane with a barrage of personal questions. Those would wait, she decided as she gave the blond a small smile of her own. For now, she would just get to know her new roommate and see how things went.

"I can't be in the sun," she said simply, seeing no reason to keep such a thing private, now. "That seemed the safest way to let me move around the apartment during the day." She paused for a second before asking politely, "Did you find your way here okay? The map isn't a very good one."

Abby's own scent gave her away as much as Jane's had. The blonde hadn't noticed right away, too preoccupied by the immediate and obvious visual clues, but the smell cemented it. Abby smelled, to Jane at least, like death. Not like a rotting body, but like some more intangible essence of death. And yet she didn't look like the vampires Jane knew. She wasn't beautiful in any noticeable way. Her eyes weren't red or any other colour Jane associated with vampires. Jane found herself intrigued, wondering how this girl differed from her sort. She knew from the network that there were several kinds of vampires here, but knowing that was only part of the equation.

"That must be terribly inconvenient," she said wrinkling her nose in distaste, not at Abby but at the idea of being so very limited. She couldn't imagine being beholden to the sun in such a way. While the Volturi were cautious, they could go in the sun without consequence so long as they were careful. The way Abby spoke made it clear the same was not true for her.

"I did not have any trouble," she assured her flatmate. "The sun is merely an inconvenience for me, and I kept my cloak up so as not to draw attention to myself." She smiled. "And, in spite of the general uselessness of the map, I managed to find the flat without difficulty. The windows really are quite ingenious. I do think I will like living with you." And, to Jane's surprise as much as anyone's, it was true. She liked Abby, or what little she knew of her. Still... "I eat humans," she said bluntly, "not mountain lions or bears of rabbits. If this offends you, do make it clear now and I will be happy to relocate." the last thing she needed was to deal with the judgements of a vampire who couldn't embrace what she was.

Although it wasn't necessarily appropriate, given the topic of conversation taking place, Abby smiled at Jane's blunt statement. She even went so far as to giggle softly. "No," she assured the girl after a second, "it definitely doesn't offend me." Her eyes shone a bit as she added with a grin, "In fact, if you didn't eat humans, this wouldn't work at all."

She didn't mention how judged she felt by some of the others in the city for eating humans as a vampire was meant to do. She didn't really give her opinion on those who chose not to eat humans, either. The fact of the matter was, that was neither here nor there at the moment. All that really mattered was that her apparent roommate had the same sort of diet that she did. Which meant, if she was going to mention anything, it needed to be the supposed 'rules' in the city that vampires who lived on humans should follow so as to more easily survive.

"I have a list," she offered after a second or two. "Of people that can die that no one is going to get that upset about. They're bad people and, well, the police just plain don't care what happens as long as their bodies aren't easily found." She shuffled a bit, trying to decide how best to say what she needed to without sounding like she was trying to make threats or something else ridiculous.

"I normally wouldn't care," she finally admitted softly. "I have to eat to survive. But..." She shrugged ever so slightly. "I think it's easier, not making everyone mad and killing people that others care about. So that's what I do here."

It was a relief, more of one than Jane was comfortable admitting, that Abby was not going to judge her for her diet. That, in fact, the other girl shared her preferences regarding food whether by choice or necessary. She had never had, dare she say it, friends her own age - physically at least - apart from Alec, and she would have hated to miss this opportunity because Abby was unfortunate enough to disregard her nature. Luckily that was not the case.

She listened, frowning but curious, as Abby explained about the list she had. A list of acceptable people to feed on and kill. The very idea grated on Jane. Why should they, superior creatures that they were, have to play nice and appease humans? But, even as it frustrated her, Jane could see the logic behind the suggestion. She knew there were more powerful beings than her here, and those beings presumably valued the lives of pathetic "innocent" humans. It would be foolish to anger them when there were alternatives. And Jane was far from foolish. "Thank you for telling me," she said politely. "Your list will prove useful in not upsetting the masses."

She was quiet for a moment, watching Abby with curiosity. "I must admit," she said after a moment, "that I have little experience with vampires my own age...excepting my brother, off course. It is..." Here she paused and considered her next word. "It is...surprisingly nice." She had never really connected with anyone but Alec, because nobody else could understand her. Not really. "I think we will be good friends, Abby." She said it with a degree of certainty, like it was a foregone conclusion.
