Who: Buffy and Spike.
What: Patrolling and belated celebration of Buffy's birthday...with vampire slaying.
Where: The cemetery.
When: Night.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress.

Buffy's twenty-fourth birthday had fallen during the time when everyone was looking for Zoe, so she'd pretty much ignored it. A lost child, kidnapped and in danger, absolutely trumped celebrating. Now, with that settled and life calmed down, she and Spike were celebrating it belatedly. By going on patrol together. They'd stopped by the park first, doing a sweep there, then gone to the cemetery to see what could be found there. Most girls wouldn't want to celebrate their birthday by going to a cemetery and stabbing things with pointy objects, but then Buffy wasn't most girls. Spending time with Spike and just doing here thing was the nicest belated celebration she could think of. Of course, it helped that he had taken her to dinner and a movie first. So it wasn't entirely morbid and creepy.

She staked a vampire who was clearly new, then hopped up to sit on a tombstone and looked at Spike. "You really know how to show a girl a good time," she teased him with a fond smile. She was happy to have him back in her life. She'd missed him when he'd been gone and, though she wasn't sure what the future would bring for them, she cared about him a lot. It was nice, having someone who was completely on her side. Who cared about her and had her back. All of it was just...really nice. "You know what I missed?" she asked him, hopping back to her feet. "While I was paired up with Rachel, I mean?" She stepped close to him and stood on her tiptoes to kiss him. "That. I missed that. A lot." Yes, it had been a while since that had ended, and she'd had plenty of opportunities to kiss Spike since then, but she wasn't above using it as an excuse to do so again.

Spike had wanted to do something special for Buffy for her birthday now that he had her back but not only had had they been with the New Years Eve, forced partner debacle, but then he'd recruited himself and the Scoobies to help find Zoe, which had fallen on Buffy's birthday, giving him no time to plan anything, but now they had finally found some free time between craziness and Spike wasn't going to pass it up. Sure there were still a couple rogue non-local vamps running around that Buffy would no doubt be going after if they were back in Sunnydale, but here she might have still been The Chosen One, but she wasn't the only one. Not only was there Faith, but also other vampires who weren't a threat to humans and could take care of it themselves. Unless they needed help of course; then Spike might swing into action depending on the situation.

Spike had never been one for dates; unless you counted stalking unsuspecting humans with Dru as a date, which he certainly didn't. So this whole taking Buffy on dates thing was new to him and he couldn't help but think that he must took completely out of place even when he wore something besides the same tattered black jeans and t-shirt. It might have been the hair or the fact that he was with the most beautiful in the place, but despite feeling out of place, he loved Buffy and wanted her to have all the normal things in life and that included dates.

The cemetery was where they always wound up, but that made it all the more familiar, like they were back in Sunnydale, but with less him getting punched in the face by her and more smiles and snogging once any vamps were taken care of. Just now for instance, that is what Spike enjoyed about their date nights, "I missed that too, Pet." Kate had been a good sparring partner once they'd gotten over their differences, but she was certainly not Buffy, "Have a good time tonight, then?"

Buffy had had a good time on their date, as unconventional as it had been in the later parts. But really, that fit them. Dinner and a movie had been normal, but following it up with a trip to stake vampires and fight evil had made it all feel more real. She didn't have completely normal things. Whenever she tried, she inevitably lost them. It felt a little too much like tempting fate to try for a average, regular night out. Going to the cemetery made it feel just a little bit more like things wouldn't go horribly wrong. And that was a relief, because at this point Buffy needed a few things to go right in her life. So much had gone wrong in the past seven years, between Angel and Glory and her mom and dying and the First and just...everything. It was well past time for something to go right, and she had decided that something would be her and Spike.

"I really did have a good time," Buffy said with a warm smile. "It was nice. The movie was kind of lame, but that just meant we didn't have to pay attention the whole time." She'd never had things like that, making out in movie theaters, in high school. She'd skipped straight past all the normal experiences to 'protecting humanity by killing the things that go bump in the night'. It was really nice to get some of that back. Spike made her feel like a normal girl...who hung out in cemeteries and stabbed vampires with sticks. So...mostly normal. And she was okay with mostly.

She was about to say more when a vampire ran at them. Sighing and rolling her eyes, she punched it, kicked it in the stomach to knock it back against a tree, and grabbed its throat while pulling out a stake with her other hand. "Excuse me," she said. "We're trying to have a conversation. Do you mind?" She staked it and watched as it exploded to ash, then turned back to Spike. "What was I saying?"

Movies had never particularly interested Spike in that past, at least not in movie theaters anyway. It wasn't as if him and Dru had spent their weekends catching a flick or anything, because chances were pretty good that the movie would have bored her and she would have decided that mutilating the audience would be more entertaining and Spike would have gone along with her, because Drusilla's approval had always meant the most to him. With Buffy however, it was different. While he still sought her approval, he knew now that she wouldn't reject him if he did something she didn't like; instead he'd probably find himself with a fist to the nose then an explanation on why he was an idiot and that would be that. Buffy wasn't fickle so he didn't have to worry about finding her shacked up with some snot demon when he least expected it and best of all, Buffy wasn't completely mad so there was that.

When the vampire jumped them, Spike let Buffy do her job, ready to act if more showed up though and smirked at her banter with the poor sod before he was floating away in the night air, "I think you were saying we hadn't snogged enough in the theater." Smirking, Spike crossed over to where she was now standing and wrapped his arms around her waist before dipping his head to kiss her.
