Who: James Potter and Sirius Black
What: Just a bit of a bromance.
Where: Roof of Building D
When: Afternoon of Tuesday, December 13th..
Status: In Progress

It was still only afternoon, but winter had set in to a point that the sky was starting to get dark even before Sirius finished his shift and apparated up to the roof of the building for a quick cigarette before he went back down to the flat. There really wasn't room for the number of people currently rammed into that limited amount of space - Sirius was starting to think it'd be easier if he just moved back into the few rooms he'd been in before James and Remus had been sent home and brought back. After all, that'd stop him running into Remus at every turn and doing his best to act as if things were normal (Which he didn't think he was doing a very good job of.). But then again, that also meant being on his own, and if there was one thing Sirius couldn't stand - besides cats, bruised bananas and that blue drink Juno guzzled - it was being left on his own.

Those were the thoughts whizzing chaotically around the animagus' head as he leant against the barrier at the edge of the roof. He was just considering the options, taking a drag from the almost-forgotten cigarette, when he heard the faint sound of someone joining him in the chilly night air. Sirius didn't need to look round to know it was James. Once you'd seen someone disappear under an invisibility cloak enough times, you started to recognise the sound of their footsteps. Still, Sirius turned his head to watch the other man approach him out of the corner of his eye. Once James was at his shoulder, Sirius allowed a vaguely teasing grin to ease across his face.

"Still in the doghouse?"

"Yeah," he grumbled, sitting heavily next to his friend. "I feel like I should have been here earlier, like I'm losing her to Snape again. I really don't know why she insists on being so nice to him. He's hardly an upstanding citizen."

James sneered.

"How about you? What's up? It's great that you're here. Keeping me sane, as usual."

Sirius grinned and shrugged. “Pass. Maybe she’s just being charitable. Bit of Christmas Spirit towards those with unfortunate noses” He pushed his long hair from his eyes, blinking away the few strands that seemed to have decided to try and blind him when they’d been caught by the biting breeze. Sirius quite liked winter, actually – it had always been the best time when they were at Hogwarts, what with the snow and the decorations. But this would be his second Christmas in Colligo, which quite frankly seemed completely mental. “I wouldn’t worry about it, mate. Far as I can tell Snivellus barely crawls out of his hole, and when he does it’s just embarrassing.”

He scoffed at James’ next comment, taking in another lungful of sharp smoke from the cigarette held loosely between his fingers. He’d really be meaning to give up, but living in a place this stressful meant you needed a few vices and anyway, as he’d pointed out to Lily, there were far worse things he could be doing. And at least he didn’t smoke inside any more. “If I’m the one keeping people sane we should probably just start stocking up on straight-jackets now.” Sirius stubbed the cigarette down against the concrete barrier he was leaning back against. “I’m okay. Better now you and Moony are back.”

He said these words not only because he felt them, but because the reactions he'd gotten mentioning Peter before had been strange to say the least. There was something he didn't know, that people weren't telling him. And James Potter did not like being out of the lurch. At all.

"You don't think that Lily keeps taking his side because she sees it as part of the whole stupid pureblood thing, does she? You know, her and Snape vs. us? I don't care about that shit," he spat. "And it sure worked out great for you, didn't it?"

He held out his hand for a cigarette.

"Give me one of those," he said with a shrug. He didn't smoke, not really, but he had been known to smoke one with Sirius on occasion, when his mood was bad enough to warrant it.

At Peter's name, a scowl creased Sirius' expression, wiping the easy smile away in a split second. He hated not being able to tell James eveything -Sirius had shared every moment with the man sat beside him since he was eleven years old, after all. The longest time he'd been out of contact with him had been in this place. But Lily should be the one to tell him. That was what everyone said, and although Sirius didn't neccesarily agree with it, he had to admit he'd been outvoted. But he know James well enough to recognise digging when he heard it, and turned to give him a sidelong look. "Careful what you wish for."

"Don't be thick," he told him firmly a moment later. "You know that's not it." Lily had never been prejudiced in any way - not towards purebloods or unpopular students or anyone. Which was probably more than James and Sirius could say for themselves. "She's probably just pissy because you yelled at someone who - for reasons we'll never understand - she reckons is a mate."

Sirius shook out a cigarette and lit with a silent, wandless charm before handing it over to James. "I'd say just say you're sorry, then keep an eye on Snape that way." He said, with a surprising but of reasoning for the animals. "She'll only spend more time with him if you guys aren't talking."

The reaction again. James knew Sirius well enough to read him like a book, and he didn't like that expression at all. Something was very wrong, something that concerned Peter. And something that Sirius couldn't - or wouldn't - tell him. He shivered inwardly, not knowing if he even wanted to know the answer, but also knowing instinctively that there was no way to avoid it.

"I don't see what she sees in him," James hissed. "Seriously. Why does she think he's her friend? He'd turn on her in a second if he had the choice. He's as much a snake as anyone else in Slytherin. Does she think she can make him into something soft and cuddly, just by being his friend? He's a Death Eater, Sirius. Am I insane that it bothers me? The bastard should be in Azkaban, getting chummy with Dementors, not hanging around with my wife."

He took a long drag of the cigarette, hoping it would calm down his racing heart. It wasn't just childhood prejudices that made James hate Severus, not now.

"Yeah, sorry seems to work with women, generally. They like it when you admit they're right, and I do need to keep an eye on them. I think she's too good to realize how bad he really is."

He shook his head, closing his eyes for a moment.

"She's treated you alright though, yeah?"

Sirius shrugged. He'd never understood the Snape thing either - he doubted he ever would, quite frankly. He hated the man, but voicing his opinions had always led to more harm than good so in the end he'd taken to staying as far as way away from him as possible. As long as Snivellus did the same it seemed to work alright. Sirius sighed and stretched, doing his best not to show his discomfort at the mention of Azkaban and Dementors, although he couldn't keep his shoulders from tensing up a little. After all, although Sirius himself had never been to Azkaban, he'd been aged up enough times for the memory to stick firmly in his head.

"She's been brilliant," he told James. "It was just me and her here for a while. She.s the only reason I didn't starve to death." He pulled his knees into his chest. Wrapping his arms around them to try and keep some of the creeping cold at bay. "So..." he started, "What was actually going on back home before you came here?"

"I love her beyond all reason," he said, taking a drag of the cigarette, slowly. "But that's one thing I will never understand about her, no matter how hard I try to."

After a moment, he shrugged.

"Same old stuff. Living at Godric's Hollow with Lily and little Harry, getting ready for Halloween, working with the Order and trying to stop Voldemort. It's a lot of work, but I've got my family to make it worthwhile."

He subconsciously included Sirius in his family - he always had.

’Getting ready for Halloween’ So he must be from around the same point as Sirius had been when he’d first arrived there. Of course, in his head that had all been a year ago, and he’d had a birthday and all kinds of changes since then. It almost seemed like another life entirely. Which, he supposed, it had been. Sirius forced a smile and moved one elbow to nudge his best friend gently in the ribs. “You sappy git.”

“And how’s this charming land striking you?” Sirius stretched his arms up over his head and arched his back a little until something clicked satisfyingly. Merlin, perhaps he was getting old. “You know there’s like… experiments that happen to people? I was a girl for a fortnight.” He said it with some weird note of pride in his voice. But when you were approaching this topic it was best to start light, he decided.

"Yeah, well, Lily and little Harry do crazy things to me, what can I say? Becoming a father, it's incredible."

His eyes look a little lost, a little frightened, and more than a little in awe.

"I guess I always knew it was something that would happen to me, but jeez, holding that little guy in my arms..."

He shook his head.

"Changed into a girl? Really? What was that like?"

“Merlin, Prongs.” Sirius rolled his eyes and treated his best friend to a swift elbow in the ribs. “Stop mooning before I’m forced to clonk your head against a wall.”

He understood – of course he did. He loved Harry too, would lie down in traffic for the tiny boy with his shock of dark hair and bright green eyes. It was just that Sirius didn’t do emotions at the best of times, at least not without a drink to back him up. It wasn’t something that had ever been part of his nature – and anyone who had ever set foot in Grimmauld place would probably understand why. Frank discussion of how you were feeling was hardly encouraged in that house.

“It was okay,” Sirius shrugged, “Got a bit boring after a while, once you’d done all the obvious stuff.” It had been one of his first experiments in this place – back when Morgana and Hannah Abbot had both been around, rolling their eyes in his direction. Godric, it seemed like forever ago. “There were inferi and weird alien bludger things as well. It’s a bloody nightmare trying to get anything done."

James made a loud "oof" sound and punched Sirius in the shoulder, but not hard.

"Hey, have one of your own and see if you aren't a little moony too," he said with a small smile. "Unless you're worried about it coming out with three heads because of all the inbreeding in your family," he teased. He grinned slightly, and took another drag of the cigarette. He was pretty sure Lily'd be pissed if she knew he was smoking, and probably blame Sirius for it as she usually did. Ah, well, she'd kicked him out, so he had plenty of time to stop smelling like it.

"I don't think I'd get bored of the...obvious stuff," he grinned impishly, making hand signs to show exactly what he wouldn't get bored of doing. "But inferi? That doesn't sound like so much fun, actually."

Sirius recoiled lightly against the light punch to his shoulder, grinning as he did so. This was what he liked about hanging around with James - it was easy. Sirius didn't have to watch his tongue or second guess himself before he spoke, because it was James, who knew everything anyway.

"One of my Great Aunts had webbed toes," he told James absently. "Although I think that was 'cos of a hex." Although it could be inbreeding, quite frankly, the rate his family were having it off with their first and second cousins.

"You disgusting human," he told James, though he couldn't hold back the laugh at his best friends hand gesture. "Bloody lucky you're married already, cos there's no way you'd ever manage to pull with that." He shrugged and scratched at the edge of his nose. He better not be getting a cold. "It wasn't a barrel of laughs," he admitted. "One had a snack on my arm and then a muggle shot me in the head. But you know... stuff's not permanent here. I came back again."

"You came back to life?" James said, with a blink. That was something that not even magic could do. Death was death, and when you died, you were gone forever.

"So this place...it isn't real? It's like a dream?"

He worried his bottom lip, thoughtfully, then blurted out what had been on his mind.

"Sirius, what is it you and Lily aren't telling me?"
