Who: Jack, Ianto, and Esther
Where: A no-name cafe
When: After the soap opera and hangover recovery
What: Finally hanging out
Status: In Progress

With things back to relative "normal", it really was time that the three Torchwood people finally met up together. Gwen had disappeared before anything could happen with the four of them, and when Jack and Esther had hit a bar during the recent craziness, that turned into a ridiculous hangover after a drinking contest with Jane Shepard. These were much better circumstances.

They'd picked a small cafe to meet at. That kept off any pressure of meeting at either living space, and it was away from the alcohol that Jack and Esther weren't going to look at for awhile. Depending on how things went, maybe they could head back afterwards for some of Ianto's best-coffee-in-the-universe (as far as Jack was convinced).

Esther had been a little surprised to hear from Jack so soon about meeting up to hang out, after all she would have thought that Jack and Ianto would have wanted some time together, but she agreed to meet. She was still mortified about what she'd said about Jack, because that was not what she thought about him at all; even if he wasn't exactly the Jack that she'd known back home she still admired him and how many people he'd slept with in his time didn't change that.

"So, how long did your hangover last?" She asked from her spot across the table from Jack, "I'm pretty sure mine lasted for at least a day and half." She had never drank quite as much as she had with Jack, Jane and Steve a few nights earlier and she was sure that if Steve hadn't gotten drunk he'd at least gotten a night of amusement out of the whole thing.

Ianto grinned and rolled his eyes. "About twice as long as it needed to, but only half as long as he'd have you believe." In spite of the recent weirdness, there was no hint of animosity or even awkwardness between him and Jack. They were pretty understanding about people acting weird through no fault of their own.

Really, one word alone could explain much of their understanding of weirdness: Torchwood. Jack wasn't clear yet on how much Esther would have adapted to that view; they hadn't really talked much about her Torchwood duration quite yet.

Jack pouted at Ianto. "At least 3/4 of what I'd have her believe!"

Esther smiled as she watched Jack and Ianto interact; Jack had mentioned Ianto at least once that she could remember during their time working together and it was clear from watching them that Ianto meant a lot to Jack and vice versa, "I hope I never get sick enough to throw up like that again. I'm pretty sure my liver wound up coming up too. Guess that means I can't drink anymore."

"Not even close!" He gave Esther a sympathetic smile. "Poor liver, I'm sure it did its best."

"We'll toast to it with our non-alcoholic beverages! Yeah, not that I don't appreciate you taking care of me, Ianto, but I think I won't put you through another one of my hangovers for a looong time. Unless you ask nicely."

Esther laughed and pushed a few strands of blond hair, which had escaped her ponytail, behind her ear, "I know, I'll miss it, but it was a casualty of war. And at least you had someone to take care of you. I was alone most of the time, but Steve did bring me coffee at one point."

"Alas, these things do happen." He smiled. "That does tend to make it easier, yeah. No fun being along when you're not feeling well."

"Farewell, Esther's liver! And really, what isn't better with coffee? Then again, depending on the coffee..." He shuddered at the thought of bad coffee. "Yeah, you should give us a ring if you ever get sick or anything. I'll smother you with concern until you wish you'd been left alone."

"I'll keep that in mind for next time," Esther laughed again, happy to be out and not arguing with either of them. She'd been worried when she found out that Jack wasn't the Jack that she'd known back home that he might not like her; after all it wasn't as if he'd chosen her or anything, she'd just sort of had to come along or face getting killed. Or not getting killed seeing as how no one could die. But she was happy to find that she had no reason to worry, "It'll be a change from when I spent two months looking after you." She glanced at Ianto then back at Jack as she began to explain, "You were completely human because of the Miracle and you got shot and almost died. I nursed you back to health while we spent two months moving around Scotland to keep from being found. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy with you in the condition you were in."

It was very weird, sitting there and hearing Esther talk about a Torchwood that had gone on past him, a Torchwood where he had died. What was that Jack like, after losing Ianto? Or had they even been together in Esther's version? He moved closer to Jack as Esther went on, feeling oddly jealous and territorial. He was the one who was supposed to take care of Jack when he was sick or hurt. He was the one who helped protect Jack from his enemies. He knew it wasn't Esther's fault, though. She had been there, and of course he hadn't. "Thank you. For taking care of him. Helping him."

Jack put a hand on Ianto's leg and gave it a little squeeze. It was strange for Jack, too, hearing about that other life. Esther needed to be able to talk about it, though; hard to get to know her without knowing what she'd been through, and with Gwen gone, she didn't have anyone else.

"I'd like to think I'm completely human now, but then that's one of those existential questions I've had to debate over the decades. Other-me was mortal for awhile, right? Two months laid up with a gunshot wound, ugh... And Scotland... Did you have to meet Archie?"
