Who: The Doctor and River Song.
What: Making up.
When: Backdated to pretty much right after the Soap Opera Plot ends.
Where: The TARDIS.
Rating: TBD.
Status: In progress.

The Doctor couldn’t believe he’d actually spent any measure of time thinking the Rani was his wife. His wife. They’d been...well, they’d been as snarky as they ever were, but it was more affectionate than usual. And that was weird. And rather gross actually. He hadn’t been lying when he said her new regeneration was pretty, because it was, and he really was glad to see that she was alive, but that didn’t mean he wanted to marry her. That was just strange and wrong. The point was, there was only one person he wanted to be married to right now, and she had every reason to be cross with him after the way he had treated her. Yes, River had been just as cruel, and had possibly tried to poison him, but he loved her. The marriage may have started as blackmail, a way to save the universe, but he still wouldn’t have done it if he hadn’t wanted to.

After making his exit - he wouldn’t call it fleeing, but it probably was - from the Rani’s TARDIS, he headed straight to his own and hoped that he hadn’t irrevocably ruined his relationship with his wife. He had instructed Mary to visit some alternate realities while he and River discussed adult things. That taken care of, he used his Sonic to find where he’d parked the old girl and rushed inside. His relief when he spotted River - she must have beat him there - was almost tangible, and he just stared for a long moment before remembering that he really ought to speak. "I’m sorry," he told her, the words spilling out in a rush, "I’m so very, very sorry. I didn’t mean that. I didn’t mean any of it. And I was absolutely never married to the Rani and I would never want to be. And I actually rather hate marriage, but I like it with you and I don’t want to be married to anyone else. And I missed you terribly and I really hope I haven’t ruined things. And I didn’t mean what I said about you...any of it. Especially about your hair. Your hair is fantastic." He paused, knowing what Zoe would say if she were here to witness this, and forced himself to breathe.

"Please say something, dear," he said after a moment, hesitant and genuinely worried that she was still upset with him and wouldn’t want him around.

River had woken up, with her senses fully restored, in a place that was not the TARDIS. Had it been a jail cell, she might have simply rolled right on over and dozed back off while waiting for the Doctor to show up yet again. However she also hadn't been in a jail cell but rather in an empty flat. And as she had jerked into a seated position with a start, several things had flickered through her mind.

The city had, once again, decided to toy with the residents. The Doctor and herself included. The result had been a rather spectacular row that had ended with her leaving the TARDIS and the both of them proclaiming their marriage to be over. And, if she didn't get back to his ship before he did, the Doctor was going to walk directly into a cleverly laid trap that she had set before storming off.

Cursing under her breath, it took River all of ten seconds to get on her feet and moving. A lifetime spent running aided her quite a lot as she made a beeline for the TARDIS, dashing inside with breath held and calling out for the Doctor with a rather large amount of worry in her tone. Fortunately he wasn't there yet and she wasted no time in once again making the ship safe for him to enter. She was just finishing up the last of the reprogramming when he finally arrived.

She'd had every intention of apologizing first. Turning to face him, her mouth had opened... only to have him beat her to the punch. Damn him, she thought fondly as she waited for him to finish. Once it seemed he had finally reached an end of his babbling, she responded in the only way that seemed at all appropriate given the situation.

She crossed to where he was standing, grabbed hold of his bow-tie, and pulled him to her for a long, deep kiss.

Once she'd finished kissing him, she pulled back with a small, affectionate smile. "You're lucky you're cute," she teased, fingers toying with his hair for a brief second before she released him fully and her smile faded into a much more somber expression. "And I'm sorry, too. I certainly don't regret having saved you, and your sense of style is very... you, which I wouldn't change for anything. And..." She stopped, sighing softly with a shake of her head. "Oh, I've always been a bit rubbish at apologizing. Let's just agree that neither of us were quite ourselves and leave it at that, shall we?"

The thing with River was that the Doctor had no idea how this was going to go. One of the perils of being married to a psychopath was that he was never quite sure how she was going to react to things. She could forgive him or she could try to murder him again. It really could go either way, though the fact that he'd made it into the TARDIS without injury spoke to the fact that she most likely didn't want him dead. That was reassuring he supposed. He rather liked being alive, and it was always a bit awkward when his wife wanted to kill him. The whole mess with Melody had been more than enough of that to last him for a while.

He stumbled through his apology, caught up in his babbling and worrying. He really hoped that she would forgive him. He missed her and he imagined he would miss her quite a bit more if she didn't take him back. And she might not. After all, even if it hadn't really been their fault, he'd still said some fairly unkind things. He hadn't meant them at all, but he'd said them. He was fairly certain he was mucking up this whole apologising thing, considering it was something he rarely did. Oh, he said he was sorry often enough, when he felt bad about failing to save someone or stop something or help enough, but that was different from really apologising.

He was as relieved as he was startled when River jerked him into a kiss, choking him a bit with his bow tie at the same time. Still, he was fairly certain that wasn't so much intentional. Good. It seemed she didn't want to kill him. He responded to the kiss, better these days at not flailing like an idiot whenever she kissed him. Finally, he pulled back, a bit dazed. "I take it you're not cross with me then?" he asked, bringing his hand up to touch his lips. That had been rather nice, as far as reactions to apologies went. He was more used to being slapped, rather hard at that and usually by someone's mother, than being kissed. All in all, it was a pleasant change in routine.

"I suppose I am quite lucky I'm cute," the Doctor responded with a small smile. "Er...or that you think I'm cute." He listened to her apology, then pulled her close again. He didn't kiss her, just looked her in the eye with a serious expression. "I know that wasn't you. I know you don't regret saving me. And I know you like my sense of style...well, maybe not the hats, considering you always shoot them. And the Stetson was a gift, from a friend." He realised he was getting off topic and smiled sheepishly. "All right. Neither of us was ourselves and we both know we didn't mean it. Glad to know that's settled." And far more easily than he'd anticipated. "I missed you, you know."

River chuckled, partially in amusement and partially because that was something she did far more often than most tended to do so and typically in situations where it wasn't entirely warranted. This was certainly no exception, really, as very few would laugh at someone admitting that they'd missed them. However, River Song was anything but typical and she hardly intended to start being so now. That would be rather dull and not something she had any interest in whatsoever.

"Of course you missed me," she remarked a bit saucily, her grin growing into a teasing smirk. "After all, you've spent the past few weeks with the Rani, of all people." It was all said in jest; River held no real ill will toward the Time Lady and really wasn't all that concerned with just how well she'd gotten on with the Doctor during their stint as husband and wife. As far as she was concerned, it was all said and done now. Provided there wasn't a repeat, she was quite willing to let it become nothing more than water under the proverbial bridge. She might have said more on the subject, although whether it would have been yet more teasing or something truly sincere was anyone's guess, if not for the sudden and, at least on her end of things, rather unexpected interruption.

"Since she didn't shoot you, does that mean I can come back now?"

Instantly River turned, hand sliding to the gun hanging at her hip although she didn't draw it. A good thing, too, considering the source of the voice happened to be a young girl who looked as though she might not be very accustomed to having weapons drawn on her without a very good reason. And although River thought that breaking into the TARDIS was certainly a good enough reason to be shot, the familiar way the child had spoken up made her quickly realize that clearly the girl didn't believe she was breaking in at all.

"Er... sweetie..." River drawled, glancing back to the Doctor before immediately turning her attention to the girl once more. "Is there something you perhaps forgot to tell me? Anything at all?" Despite her confusion, her lips twitched ever so slightly. Leave it to the Doctor to be on familiar terms with a girl with unfettered access to his ship and fail to mention it. Bless him.

The Doctor couldn't help but smile at River's confidence. It really was something he loved about her, the way she was so at ease with herself. She knew she was amazing and she made sure everyone else knew it. It was an undeniably attractive quality, especially to someone like him who was so taken by exceptional individuals. Besides, he had his fair share of arrogance and he could hardly dislike the quality in another person. "I really did," he said softly. He'd missed her quite a lot, even when he'd left her for the Rani because of whatever the city had done to make him believe he was married to the woman.

He laughed at the way she spoke of the Rani, shaking his head. "I'm certain she's just as horrified as I am over that whole mess," he said. "She's brilliant, no doubt about that, and I do respect her...but...no. Just...we would never have...no." The very idea made him grimace. He and the Rani could respect one another, but that didn't mean they especially liked each other. And they certainly weren't fond enough of one another to ever be married. The very idea was too ridiculous to contemplate. "But that's over and done and I'm back where I belong. With you. And my TARDIS." He paused. "You didn't really put aspirin in everything, did you?"

He stopped at the sound of Mary's voice, his eyes widening. Though it was true that River wasn't going to shoot him over the whole mess with Ushas, he had hoped to have a chance to explain to her about Mary before the girl arrived. No such luck on that score, it seemed. Oh dear. This was certainly going to be awkward. Hopefully River would take this well, but he couldn't be sure.

"River!" he said a bit frantically, flailing slightly. "This is Mary. Mary Lampion. She's eight years old and a bit brilliant and I...mighthavetoldhershecouldstayhere." The last bit came out all in a rush, and the Doctor forced himself to stop and breathe. "Er...that is...I told her she could stay here...which I was just about to tell you before she arrived. Really, I was."

He looked nervous for a moment, then charged ahead with his typical manic flair. "Mary can do the most fantastic thing, River," he said. "She can walk between realities. No trouble to it, just goes between them. Ignores all the walls, and simply passes to and from them, like opening a door...which would be ignoring the walls, since doors aren't walls and...the point is she's wonderful. And you don't mind, do you? Please say you don't." And then he went and gave her puppy eyes, hoping it would help.
