Who: Arthur and Merlin
What: Saving skinny idiots from themselves.
When: Sometime directly after Merlin's call gets cut off
Where: The police station
Rating: Dependent

"Brilliant."

Arthur swiped a hoodie from his closet and chucked it over his head, tossing up the hood and grabbing his keys. He was not a fool, nor was he in the mood to fight off unwanted attention when the entire world seemed prepared to break bones and light cars on fire. He knew how to keep a low profile when it was needed and he kept close to the buildings as he walked at a saunter down the curb, kicking a rock ahead of him and keeping his head down.

He wasn't stupid.

He made it to the police station unscathed and prepared to deal with uncooperative officers with as much brusque politeness as he could muster. By the time they got it sorted that Arthur didn't want to create trouble, and was simply here to pay a fine and take his friend home, tempers had flared and he was getting very shirty looks.

Pleasant.

"Where is he?" he finally snapped, giving up on being polite for the sake of getting this done.

And if he was roughly shoved as he was led back to the cells, he wasn't about to point it out or fight back.

"You're an idiot," he greeted Merlin as the woman who had led him here fiddled with her keyring.

"I didn't start it." He grumbled, avoiding the dirty glare he got in response, and decided to keep quiet until after they left the police station. Merlin gathered the little bag of things they had confiscated from him, as well as the fine he now had to pay for the fight that wasn't his fault. Once they headed outside he started to explain again.

"I was walking home from work, and just bumped this guy's shoulder. I even apologized, but he threw a fit." As evident by the lovely black eye he is sporting. Of course, that was all he got, and the guy who decided it would be a good idea to sucker punch him got it worse - A magical kick down the street away from Merlin, and and irritated little dragon breathing fire at him.

"Aedan!" Merlin called and the foot and a half tall dragon flew down from the top of the police station and landed on his shoulder making a small noise as it's head nuzzled Merlin's cheek. Because of course Merlin would coo and baby a dragon. He took the creature's tail in his hand, noticing it was turning back to stone again.

"The guy did get a little singed for it. Jerk." He grinned.

"Thank you for coming to get me."

"You've named it." Arthur watched the interaction with keen interest. He hadn't doubted Merlin's capabilities when it came to magic, but he did have to admit he was more than a little shocked by the way the creature was nuzzling Merlin's cheek like a cat. "Why am I not surprised?"

He could feel eyes on them as they walked, the general irritation of the other pedestrians kept Arthur close to Merlin's side. "You're not very good at blending in," he muttered.

"He had to have a name." He stated, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Of course when Arthur pointed out he wasn't doing a great job blending in he pulled the dragon from his shoulder and tucked it in his jacket, cradling it in the crook of his arm.

"Is that better?" Merlin asked, staying close to Arthur's side. "I think once I can figure out how to keep him from turning back to stone I'll give him to Freya..." He grinned. A dragon on top of his other two pets - It was a little much, he'd need a bigger room at the very least.

"He didn't have to have anything." But Arthur's tone was beyond fond, if not low and subdued. The hostility that had been noticeably growing was reaching a new level unforeseen and Arthur disliked the idea of dallying out too long.

Especially unarmed. Especially when he just had to bail his best friend out of prison.

"He was once a statue." He took in Merlin's shiner quietly. "Have Gwen look at that when we get back in."

"And what - just call him dragon? That'd be like me calling you prince all the time or dollop-head or something." He rolled his eyes, and reached in his jacket to stroke the dragon's back, quietly muttering to change his tail back from stone.

"I told you I could do it." Merlin resisted the urge to stick his tongue out to go with that 'I told you so.' "It's fine. Just a black eye."

"You-" The old argument sat firmly on the edge of his tongue when he felt something smack into the back of his head and saw a small stone clatter off into the road.

He didn't look back, though he did curse violently under his breath. He shot Merlin an irritated look.

"Can you get us home faster, or are we going to have to run?"

"Are you kidding? I had to sleep on a rock slab last night. I'm too tired to run." He grumbled back, while a second rock stopped inches before hitting Arthur's head and flew back at them. Merlin yawned a little and kept walking. He kept his head down, but really didn't want to have to run all the way back to the apartments.

Arthur was grateful that he didn't have to feel that sensation a second time, but that didn't mean they were in the clear and that kept his temper elevated.

"Keep that up and you're going to be blasting more than one person down the street."

"I can do that but fine. No more throwing the rocks back." He leaned over and nudged Arthur with his shoulder, chuckling softly to himself softly.

"Remember how you used to face armies?"

"Yes." Arthur shoved his hands into his pockets and acted like he wasn't noticing the angry mutters and casual slurs being hurled at them. Those were far easier to ignore than rocks to the skull.

"I was well-armed and facing opponents of similar skill."

"You don't think you're well armed now?" He asked. Ignoring the anger and insults was easier for Merlin. He was more focused on Arthur and the dragon sleeping in his jacket, sparing the rest only just enough attention to keep rocks or whatever else from hitting them.

"They have rocks. You have years of training, a sorcerer, and a dragon on your side."

"A sorcerer I just fetched from a prison cell," Arthur reminded him. "Yes, you're a reliable asset."

He hummed and glanced at the snoozing dragon. "A dragon though may come in some use as a distraction when I need to run."

"The guy surprised me, and I wasn't going to make it worse by attacking the police. The people here are getting worse though, and it won't happen again." He shrugged and smiled.

"You've got to admit. He's cute for a dragon."

"He's...tiny," Arthur settled on, but that didn't mean Arthur couldn't spot its worth. Dragon's were intimidating on their own merit, one that was small and could easily sneak up on a potential enemy made him even more valuable.

Of course that meant Merlin would treat it as a small house pet.

"I could make a bigger one, but I think it would be harder to feed and bring to life. The first time I tried it took me all night to get one of those stupid dog statues to come to life." Merlin glanced up, pleased that the apartments were in sight without any life threatening altercations taking place along the way.

Having the apartments in sight was more than a relief to Arthur. He hated the feeling of eyes on him as he moved, as if he were some prey in a larger hunt.

"If you're right, even at this size it can do considerable damage."

"Relax, Arthur. I'm not going to let them jump you." It was almost funny seeing Arthur so uneasy. They had faced all sorts of insane things, and Arthur was afraid of a few angry locals. It's not even the worst thing to happen in Colligo.

Arthur rolled his eyes and yanked hard on Merlin's ear. He wasn't concerned so much with the locals as Guinevere's reaction should he come home with another black eye or worse. He'd been in plenty of fights before. Those were hardly the problem.

"Ow! Hey!" Merlin smacked his hand away and rubbed his ear. "I'll forgive that since you bailed me out but - ow. I'll remind you, I have a dragon that loves me in my jacket." He motioned for Arthur to follow when he pushed open the door to his room.

"Gwen can look at my eye later. Here, hold Aedan for a little bit. I need to change." He said, trying to gently foist the dragon into Arthur's arms so that it didn't wake up.
