Who: Remus Lupin and Lucy Saxon.
What: A picnic after the most fun "errands" ever.
Where: The park.
When: Shortly after this.
Rating: Probably no more than PG.
Status: In progress.

Remus was having more fun than he had in a long time. Lucy was nicer than any adult he had ever met, aside from his mum and dad of course, and she didn't even seem to mind that he was a wizard. He'd heard that muggles could be odd about things like that, but Lucy had been nothing but kind to him. He liked it. And she had made him breakfast and taken him to plenty of really interesting places. They had gone to the library, where she had let him pick out his own books and didn't even mind when he changed his mind several times before settling on an Agatha Christie novel. Then they'd stopped by a chocolate shop, which was almost as nice as the library, and a sandwich shop to get supplies for lunch. Now, they were heading to the park to eat and spend the afternoon outside. Yes, he really liked Lucy. And he really wanted her to like him.

Of course, she didn't know his real secret, and he was sure that once she did she wouldn't want him around any more. So, while he fully intended to tell her his secret - it didn't seem fair or right to hide it when she was being so kind - he also wanted to wait a bit longer. He didn't want to lose this, especially when he wasn't sure who else would want to look after him. He could be quite self-sufficient when he chose, but he was still rather young and didn't particularly want to be alone. But he didn't want to dwell on that while they were in the park and the day was so nice. Instead, he settled down in the grass and gave Lucy a smile. "I'm having a really nice time, Miss Lucy," he said cheerfully. Then he paused and tilted his head slightly. "Are you sure I'm not keeping you from important things?" Because as nice as this was, he didn't want to inconvenience her.

Lucy had always liked children. As the youngest in her family, she hadn't been forced to share her toys or gotten in trouble for something someone else had done, therefore she hadn't ever developed any sort of animosity toward other kids as her some of her siblings had done. No, she had been the one who had dreamed of growing up, marrying the man she loved, and having lots of children of her own to pass the love she'd received from her parents onto.

Then she'd met Harry, had learned his secret, and had been forced to make a decision. Although it wasn't anything ever said aloud, she had known without a shadow of a doubt that choosing to be with him meant she had to give up any chance of having children of her own. While it had destroyed a part of her to do it, Lucy had decided she would rather be with Harry than be a mother and, just like that, any chances of her having a family had evaporated before her very eyes.

Now, though, Harry wasn't there and Remus, one of the few others with whom she'd become close in the city, had been turned into a child overnight. Lucy knew it wouldn't last. She knew one day soon he would wake to find himself an adult again. However she had decided, from the instant she'd heard his quietly panicked voice coming from the sitting area of her flat, that she would be the best surrogate mother for him that she possible could for however long she had to do so.

It hadn't been difficult to design a day the boy would enjoy. Armed with Sirius' suggestions as well as Lucy's basic understanding of what Remus liked to do as an adult, she had taken him to the library, a shop that specialised in home-made chocolate treats, and a sandwich shop that carried far better quality meats and cheeses than any grocer in the area could boast. Finally, armed with a basket filled with food and a blanket in case the ground happened to be a bit damp, Lucy took him to the park for an afternoon of simply enjoying the weather, good books, and one another's company.

Settling down in the grass beside him, Lucy turned her gaze to the boy when he spoke. She shook her head lightly at his question, a gentle smile crossing her face. "I can't think of a single thing more important to do than this, Remus," she assured him honestly, just barely refraining from ruffling his hair affectionately. "Now, would you like something to eat or shall we wait for a bit?"

Lucy reminded Remus a lot of his mother, or at least the way his mother had been before. It wasn't that she wasn't still a good mother, because she was, but she'd become somewhat more distant after he'd been bitten. He could hardly blame her, or his father, for the change. It had to be hard to love someone who was so very dangerous. Still, being here with Lucy was nice even though it was a little sad, and part of him secretly hoped hoped that he could stay with her for a while longer before he had to go home.

The park was warm and sunny and all of it reminded him of the times that his parents had taken him to muggle parks after visiting his mother's parents. They'd visited them less after they'd found out about his condition, not wanting to have to explain the change. He supposed that was part of why his mother had a harder time dealing with his condition than his father. His father had always been a part of the wizarding world but his mother, for all she was a witch, still had very muggle sensibilities. It couldn't have been easy for her to suddenly have a werewolf as a son. That was also part of why he was worried about telling Lucy. She was, as far as he could tell, a muggle. He didn't want to upset her by telling her the truth.

But he knew he had to. She was just so nice and it felt wrong to lie to her, in spite of how his parents had always cautioned him to not tell anyone about his condition. He returned her smile hesitantly as she said she couldn't think of anything more important than spending time with him. "Really?" he asked. "Thank you." He paused a moment, working up his nerve, and finally spoke after she asked him if he wanted to eat or wait. "We should wait a bit," he said immediately. He hesitated another moment, nervous about how she would react. "Um...Miss Lucy?" he said softly. "There's something I need to tell you."

This was it. The moment of truth. He just hoped that she wouldn't be too upset with him for not telling her sooner. She would have every right to be, but he still hoped she wouldn't. He also hoped that she would still like him after she knew his secret. "I'm not just a wizard," he said haltingly, looking down at the ground so he wouldn't have to see her reaction. "I'm a...a...I'm a werewolf, Miss Lucy."
