For the most part, Jamie did her best to be a good roommate and give Billy his privacy. She'd never really had a roommate before, too mistrustful of others and unaccustomed to staying in one place for any real stretch of time, but she had some idea of how it was supposed to work. She liked to think she'd done a good job of it so far. There had definitely been the strange moments, like the time she'd painted her entire room and everything in it white, floor, walls and ceilings, or the times when Billy would lock himself away for hours. But her roommate was quiet and kind of sweet, and Jamie was glad to have him around. She missed Vince terribly, and still hated that he was gone, but between her friendship with Ashley and her odd sort of domestic arrangement with Billy, she was starting to like being here.
The point was, she did her best not to invade Billy's privacy or go in his room for any reason. After all, she wouldn't want him to see the computer system she'd set up on one side of her room with funds she had relocated from the bank. She'd made sure to take the "donations" from corrupt locals who wouldn't complain. What? She was more than adept at getting by through less than strictly legal means. The problem was she needed a screwdriver to get to some wiring and she couldn't seem to find her tool kit anywhere. She knew that as soon as she borrowed Billy's, she'd find her own, but it seemed like a more expedient solution than looking everywhere. So she knocked on his door and, when he didn't answer, opened it slightly and popped her head inside.
"Hey, Billy?" she said. "Do you have...uh..." She trailed off, looking around. "...A secret lab in your bedroom?" The room had lab tables and strange devices and most of the bed was taken up with notes and equipment with only a small space where she supposed he slept. Suddenly, Jamie didn't feel quite so bad about her own mildly crazy room.
