WHO: Charles Xavier and River Song
WHAT: A not-so-random meeting.
WHEN: Mid-morning
WHERE: The Human Sciences Department at the University
RATING: TBD
STATUS: In Progress

Although River had noticed the hubbub of the recent arrivals in the city, truth be told she hadn't paid too much attention to it all. She'd had more than enough things going on in her own life - particularly the truth of who she was, at least in part, being discovered - that she really hadn't had much time nor desire to focus on other things. In fact the only other area that was receiving any attention from her was her work and that was mostly because it was far easier to think of things other than the truth about herself when she was teaching. Then word had trickled down through the grapevine that one of the new arrivals was also going to be teaching several courses and she had decided to seek the man out. So shortly after her morning class let out she bypassed going to her own office and instead headed to the door of the newest member of the faculty.

Professor Charles Xavier was the name printed on the door. He was young - far younger than most who had such an esteemed title - but rumour had it he was also ridiculously clever. Honestly she hoped so because she would hate to be disappointed and have wasted her free time with someone who might be a bore.

With a welcoming smile on her face she rapped her knuckles lightly against his door, despite the fact that it was already partially opened, then said without much preamble, "I do hope I'm not interrupting anything too terribly important. I thought I ought to at least stop by and introduce myself. It isn't very often we get a new face that isn't also a local, after all." What could she say? She never was one for beating around the bush. At least, not unless the Doctor was concerned and even then it was mostly because it was just so much fun.

Charles had rather thrown himself into life in Colligo. He knew that he should want to return home, that he should be making every effort to get back to Westchester and his life there, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. He had regained so much in this place, his legs the very least of it. He had his sister back, and his family, and he couldn't bring himself to care about things like complacency and foolishness. He had his family back, and he didn't want to give that up. The past months had been so empty. He'd had the boys, of course, and they more than kept him busy, but he'd felt empty without the two people who had been closest in his life, without the freedom of mobility, and with his ideals shaken. He felt like Colligo had helped him in ways he'd never even imagined were possible. The students from his future especially brought him hope for the future, even if he knew he wouldn't be around to see equality for mutants.

So he was making a life for himself in the city, starting with a job. He may have overdone it with the university, but he liked the diversity of his classes. Besides, he had TAs to help him out, and he had the utmost confidence in their abilities. It was, after all, very hard for a telepath to have errors in judgment regarding things like that. Larger things, yes, and things more central to the human mind, but not little things like if someone was suited to a certain task. Now all he had to do was become acquainted with his colleagues.

And, it seemed, that was taking care of itself. He looked up from schedules and class lists at the knock to his door, pressing lightly at the mind of the woman standing there, from force of habit. There was something strange about her mind, something that made him want to pull away and draw closer all at once, but he didn't allow his indecision to show. "I suppose it is a novel thing, getting a professor from among the captives," he said with a smile, getting to his feet. "Charles Xavier," he said, holding out a hand. "How are you today, Dr. Song?"

Well then. River smiled, shaking his hand firmly as her eyes studied every little nuance she could make out in those few, brief seconds of greeting. "A pleasure, Professor Xavier," she replied with ease, letting her arm fall back to her side. "And you're quite right on that end. The city also seems rather fond of swapping us out every so often, although I do believe you are the first to cover quite so many courses in one go."

She shut the door without much fanfare. She would prefer their conversation from this point onward not be available to any member of staff or any student who happened along. Moving toward the bookshelf along one wall, she studied the titles present for a long moment. One finger danced across the spines of the tomes, a fond look flickering briefly across her face. After a brief pause, she turned back to the man present. That same friendly smile was back but there was a bit of... knowing, as well, shining in her eyes.

"Now," she said with a touch of amusement in her tone, "I'm fairly certain my reputation hasn't quite grown to the extent that it precedes me here. I'm also equally sure I didn't offer it." Taking a seat in one of the chairs across from his desk, she crossed her legs, rested her hands on the armrests, and positively beamed at him. "Been some time since I've met a proper telepath," she concluded lightly. "It might do to warn you that my mind can be quite a frightening place at times."

"I haven't been here too terribly long," Charles said, "but I can already see that this is a very interesting place." He smiled. "I haven't met many of the other professors yet, but I suppose that is to be expected. I'm brand new myself, and the only one I knew before you stopped by was Barbara. She's teaching Computer Science. We were both hired at the same time." He really was quite fond of Barbara, but it was good to meet other people too.

He was startled when she called him out on being a telepath, but the shock faded into a pleased smile. "Sorry about that," he said sheepishly. "It's just...habit I suppose. The surface thoughts...I don't even really think about it any more. They're just there." He shrugged, grinning at her warning. "Oh I don't know, Dr. Song," he assured her, falling into flirtation with an ease born from many nights spent in many pubs. At least he wasn't waxing poetic about genetics, though he got the sense that Dr. Song might well appreciate that. "I rather like a bit of danger now and then. It keeps things interesting."

"So you've met proper telepaths before?" he asked her, letting the flirting abate for the moment. "I've only met one other telepath before, and she was a rather unpleasant person. Misused her gifts terribly." He frowned slightly. "I must admit it's rather refreshing to meet someone who just knows. Doesn't happen very often." He moved over toward the door. "Fancy a walk, Dr. Song? You can show me around. I've no doubt you know all the interesting places."

River saw no reason not to take him up on his offer. He was certainly interesting, she hadn't any other plans for the moment, and the weather was nice enough to warrant a trip beyond the small, rather stifling area of their offices. So with a smile she replied, "Of course I've met proper telepaths before. What sort of intergalactic space and time traveller do you take me for, Professor?" Then she stepped out of his office and made her way down the corridor, casting another grin his way once they'd turned toward the building's exit.

"I can't say I've met the new Computer Science teacher either," she remarked, "although I am pleased it's another non-local. This place can be dreadfully dull if the wrong question gets asked in mixed company." There was a touch of joking to her voice but she was also being honest. Locals were great... until you started waxing poetic about being in the city. Not to mention their courses tended to be quite cut and dry, causing most of her students to be half-asleep by the time they ever reached her doors. It was rather a pain, really.

"I do insist," she finally tacked on as she held the door leading to the courtyard open, indicating for him to step outside first, "that you call me River." She cast him a sideways grin. "Formalities seem rather pointless when you can know what I'm going to say before I even say it, after all."
