Henry wasn't Henry any more. He’d been a bit of Henry last night, but it had faded and drowned and been swallowed by a deeper, canine something. Something that growled and scratched and ran in the moonlight. The human part that liked games and science fiction and could rebuild a computer in ten minutes flat was completely gone as he stalked along the park, giving a wide berth to the scent of the other wolves around the trees, nose turned upward and out.
There was something there. Something big, with bright blood and thick muscle and hot breath. Strong and solid and warm, the smell making his mouth water dangerously. He swerved off from his well-trodden route, slinking across the grass. The Thing That Had Been Henry fell heavily down from two legs to four, pressing his long body into the grass to watch. An animal, tied up outside the building. A hot tongue rolled from his mouth, hanging between sharp, glinting teeth to touch the cool air. A growl curled at the back of his throat.
Then he was out, moving. A flash of teeth, dark eyes and fur. The horse’s eyes widened enough to see the whites and it reared up with a frantic whinny, kicking its legs out towards the attacking creature. Dust reared around their feet, jaws snapped and crashed. A growl mixing with the frantic cries of the tied up animal.
Ygraine had been working late tonight, giving Uther the chance to do whatever he wanted with his free time. Yes, in all ways Uther was in charge but that didn’t mean Ygraine didn’t do her fair share of work to help him. Such as the surprisingly large amount of paperwork they had to fill in. She had heard little quiet noises from the horses since she was left alone but nothing else. Until now anyway. Frowning at the growling, she jumped up when she heard the distressed noise of a horse. She knew there were a few wild animals roaming around and it was easy enough to scare away a dog or a wolf.
She hadn't expected something that big.
Something else burst out of the building, the one with the light in the window. A human. That was more fun. They were easier than the horse on the rope, because they weren’t as big or had as hard hooves. But they ran and screamed and it was fun and they tasted good. The Thing That Had Been Henry turned, frozen for a moment as a new smell caught in his nostrils. Then he turned away from the terrified horse, jumped, and a second later his teeth were sinking into hot, soft flesh. Blood, metallic and bright, flooded his nose and his mouth and there was yelling and screaming and fighting.
Then something collided hard with the back of his skull. The panicking horse’s back leg kicking out and making contact. Stars erupted, pain washed in a painful wave across the wolf’s head and down the curve of his neck, making thick fur stand on end. The Thing That Had Been Henry gave a pained yelp, stumbled backwards. Then he was gone, vanishing off into the growing shadows with his tail between his legs, leaving the woman stretched bleeding on the floor behind him.
