Who: Castiel and Dean Winchester.
What: A much needed talk.
Where: Diner in town.
When: Backdated to May 15th, shortly after this.
Rating: Moderate

He was always a very patient being, but knowing he had to explain to Dean the things he knew made the angel almost...finicky. He didn't even bother to walk to the diner from his apartment. Instead, he teleported himself behind the building and walked around the front to enter.

And no matter how much he tried to think of it in the sense that Claire explained it - that it wasn't him and he hadn't made those decisions quite yet - he still felt responsible. He still felt as if he was the one who did the things that he saw happen. Castiel frowned at his thoughts dwelling in the front of his mind as he took a seat in one of the booths, pulling slightly at the collar of his shirt.

In an attempt to not worry, Castiel didn't bother dressing in the old clothes of his vessel. He opted for a normal, more casual look; but it didn't help him very much. His eyes stayed locked on the door, watching for the hunter to enter and for the inevitable disappointment that would no doubt follow once things were out in the open.

Dean was worried about Cas. Clearly something was up with the angel and he wasn't sure what it was but he doubted it was anything even close to good. Conversations like this rarely lead to things like 'Hey, my life is awesome back home and I really wanted to share that with you'. Cas was fighting a war in heaven, not organizing picnics and raffles. Dean could only imagine what that was like, and it left him concerned for his best friend. Raphael was a tough sonuvabitch from what he'd seen, and he worried that Cas was going to lose himself trying to oppose him. Dean wasn't sure what he would do if he lost Cas, and he didn't really want to contemplate the possibility. The guy was his closest friend, he was as good as family, and he needed him in his life.

Walking into the diner, he looked confused at the sight of Cas in normal people clothes. Far from setting him at ease, it put him on guard. Cas didn't dress like that. Cas dressed like heaven's tax accountant, and that was just how it was. Seeing him in anything else made Dean think of the other Cas, the one who made him uncomfortable and twitchy, and he never wanted to make that association. Still, he supposed it was a good thing that Cas was doing things like dressing himself and making choices based on what he liked, even if it was too close to bad memories for his comfort.

"Hey, man," he said, taking as seat across from the angel. "I didn't think you owned any other clothes. Guess it's good to know I was wrong on that one. Did someone show you the softer side of Sears?" He smiled, slightly awkward, then shrugged. "So, what's up? You made it sound all serious in your message." Typical Dean behavior, hiding his own worries and nervousness behind a glib front. He didn't think Cas really bought it, but he had to try.

At the sight of Dean, there was an odd feeling as if someone dropped something in his vessel’s stomach. He silently determined it to be nerves, but when did the angel ever let nerves of any sort bother him? The moment he sat down, Castiel stopped fidgeting with his collar and stoned his expression to the usually serious one he wore.

The comment about the clothes made him furrow his brow slightly. “Claire lent me a hand during the period of time where I was human here. I wanted to try something different.” And the different stuck with him. He still wore the clothes and ate human foods, particularly the ones he grew fond of. Although, he couldn't pinpoint what Sears was. He'd leave that question for another day.

“It is serious, Dean,” he explained. “It’s about Sam.” Castiel had a feeling just mentioning it was about Sam was going to make things tense. He knew how close the brothers were and that they still looked out for one another even though they weren’t children anymore. He knew because he still felt the same towards some of his own siblings and could relate in a sense. Even if he didn’t exactly have a childhood like a human would have… He went silent though, trying to watch Dean’s reaction and judge in advance how he would take the news.

Dean, of course, knew that Claire had helped Cas with clothes when he was human, but it was still disconcerting to see him dressed differently. "I guess I'm just used to seeing you in the holy tax accountant outfit." He smiled slightly, giving a little shrug. "I guess...it's good...that you're branching out. It's...you know...good for you." And this was just getting awkward, which was pretty much the exact opposite of what he wanted. "But enough about your clothes. We're not chicks, no point in discussing that kind of thing for hours." And boy, was he glad Claire wasn't there. He was pretty sure she would have smacked him for that one, and she would have been well within her rights to do so.

"Sam?" Dean asked, raising an eyebrow. He'd thought this was going to be about Cas and whatever was off about him, so he was honestly shocked when it ended up being about his brother. "What about Sam?" He was calmer than he might have been back home, but he'd gotten to a point where he wasn't going to freak out about every little thing. If he did that here, he'd probably work himself up into a heart attack. And if he did that, his wife would stab him somewhere uncomfortable with a syringe of her blood and, again, smack him. It was a recurring theme in his life. "Talk to me, Cas," he said, worry seeping into his tone. "What's up with Sam?"

The blank look stayed on his face as Dean spoke about the clothes. He didn't really see reason why they couldn't discuss it if there weren't more pressing matters at hands, even if they weren't women. That was for another time though.

"I don't know how much he has told you about home, but his period of time without a soul..." Castiel furrowed his brow thoughtfully, still an unwavering serious expression on his face. "I feel it's my fault. I'm the one who raised him," he said, letting his voice drop to a slight whisper. He'd played his experience of raising Dean in his head many times and Castiel couldn't find where he went wrong with Sam. Or would, if he did take Claire's approach with him having not made those choices yet. "He doesn't know it was me either when I asked him who before."

"I remember his period of time without a soul just fine, Cas," Dean said, thinking back to his own memories of stopping Sam from killing Bobby and the way Sam hadn't really been Sam. He didn't really like thinking about that time. He probably would have said more, but Cas's words knocked the air right out of him.

For one horrible moment, he wondered if Cas had meant to bring Sam back soulless. After all, the angel had brought him back just fine. What had gone wrong with Sam? But he shook the feeling right off. This was Cas. This was his best friend. And he would never do something like that. "I guess all I can really say is thanks then," he said once everything had sunk in. "I mean...you gave me back my brother, Cas. Even if you didn't do it for me...Sam didn't deserve to stay down there." He sighed. "Do you have any idea how Crowley held on to his soul?" he asked. "I mean...is it some King of Hell perk? Or something with the cage or...any ideas?"

Well, that was certainly different. Castiel canted his head to the side slightly at this a moment before he blinked and straighted out again to the natural posture he had. "You're welcome." The word of thanks was nice. It was one of few times he'd heard it from the man. It was what Castiel felt he should've been told when he was in that holy fire and proclaimed it the first time.

"I'm not sure. It wasn't an easy task so a mistake could've been made unless Crowley had a part in it..." He could vouch that Crowley wasn't with him when he pulled Sam though. Like any story though, there was more to this. He made the decision to tell the truth of all this before someone found out the hard way. "It may have to do with the power Crowley's obtained from the souls."

Dean shrugged. Cas was his friend, and it wasn't like he'd never thanked him for anything he did. And, when you really thought about it, saving his brother from Hell was a pretty big thing. Of course he was going to be grateful. But he also had other worries and he really was concerned about Cas. Something was just off. He could feel it, chick flick as the thought sounded in his head.

"He's the King of Hell," Dean pointed out. "Hard to imagine him not having a part in it, considering it went down in his back yard. Not to mention he was the one who had the thing in the first place." He trailed off as Cas mentioned something about souls. "What's that about, anyway?" he asked. "Souls...Death said something to me about souls. That it was all about the souls. What does that mean?" Because if anyone could help him understand, it would be Cas.

"That makes sense." Out of everything, that was the most sensible thing about everything - Crowley having the soul. How he did it though, he wasn't entirely sure of. But, as Dean said, it was the King of Hell. He was powerful, almost as powerful as Castiel remembered feeling with the first cut of souls he was given.

He took a breath and said, "The souls are very powerful, Dean. They're similar to...a battery. And all the souls that could be used by someone are in Purgatory." He only paused for a moment, continuing on before he decided stopping would be best. "Crowley was trying to open the door to Purgatory and I was working with him. It's a horrible decision, I know, but the war Dean. I may be able to stop Raphael with the power."
