who: Spike & Buffy Summers
what: Spike has some explaining to do
where: Spike's apartment
when: Backdated to the 11th
rating: TBD
status: in progress

Spike had been in this strange city for a little less than a day and already he was torn between whether or not he would rather be back in LA. For one thing, there didn't seem to be an apocolypse happening at the moment so that was a plus, but Buffy was there too and while that should have been a big plus, there was the little matter of explaining to her why he wasn't blowing in the wind, or more precisely, mixed in with the various rubble in the crator that had once been Sunnydale. He knew she deserved an explaination and it wasn't that he hadn't wanted to tell her that he was alive, because he had, but a select few had prevented that from happening.

So, he'd asked her to come to his flat, so he could finally explain everything to her and hope that she didn't decide to stake him.

Buffy had left the stakes at home. She felt this was a sign that she was growing as a person and handling emotional crises in a much healthier manner than she might have done in the past. Or something.

Besides, if Spike really pissed her off, she could break a leg off a chair and use that. She'd done it enough times before. It was second nature, like riding a bicycle. A really deadly, pointy bicycle that you stabbed people with. Okay, bad metaphor. And, alright, maybe she wasn't exactly handling the whole emotional maturity thing.

Still, she needed to talk to Spike and find out the truth. Because he was alive, and not in the way people were when they showed up in this place after they died. No, he was talking about being in LA and Cordy and Wes weren't at all surprised to see him. Neither was Willow, for that matter. So, all signs pointed to him somehow surviving what had happened. Surviving and not telling her. She felt hurt and unsure how to react, but she was going to hear him out and reserve judgment until he was done. Coming to his apartment, she knocked on the door and waited until he opened it. "Hey..." she said uncertainly, looking up at him and trying to push down the emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. She had cared about him, and she had lost him, and seeing him now brought all that right back to the surface. "So...you're alive...or undead, I guess. How does that work?"

Hearing the knock at the door, Spike froze. He knew her scent and the sound of her heart and other various things that only he, being a vampire, could pick up on, so he didn't even need to open the door to know it was Buffy. For an entire year he'd wanted nothing more than to go to her. Tell her he was alive, but now. Now he was nervous. And if there was one thing he hated, it was this. Worrying once again that she'd reject him and he cursed the fact that he had held on to so much of his humanity and the fact that his soul just seemed to intensify it now.

After a moment, he finally willed himself to move towards the door and yanked it open, blue eyes wide as he stared down at Buffy. She looked just as she had the last time he'd seen her; better actually since she hadn't been spending the last few hours fighting uber vamps and bringers, but still, just as the last time. "It's complicated. Or not so complicated actually. You might want to come in, unless you enjoy standing out in the hall." He quirked a brow, attempting to act as if he didn't really care one way or the other. Only problem, he had found, was that he could no longer act around Buffy.

"It's complicated? Seriously?" Buffy stared at him for a long moment, still having trouble processing the whole situation. He looked fine. Completely fine. And she just couldn't understand that, not after seeing what had happened to him. This just felt wrong. "You say that if you're...I don't know...breaking up with someone or dealing with a little drama. This? Is so far beyond complicated it might as well be in another country!" She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.

"Yeah...I guess I should come in. I don't think this is a conversation the neighbors need to hear." She said finally as she brushed past him, debating sitting down for a moment before deciding she was too restless to even try. She didn't have the normal fight or flight response to problems that some people did. With her, it was on overdrive. She wanted to hit him, or run as far away as she could, and not doing either was making her skin feel tight. But she needed the truth. She needed to know how Spike had managed to survive and why nobody had bothered to tell her. "So...you're alive," she said again. "Undead. Whatever. You're not a pile of ash. So...explain."

If Spike was honest there'd always been a little part of him that had expected Buffy to be so happy that he was alive that she'd just throw herself into his arms and they would kiss and live happily ever after. However, Spike's life was the farthest thing from a fairy tale one could get, so he wasn't the least bit surprised with the third degree; nor did he blame her.

Not bothering to offer her anything to drink, not that he had anything, Spike crossed his arms over his chest as he watched her, deciding it was best to start at the beginning, "That trinket Angel gave you, it somehow trapped me inside and instead of being lost to the crator which was Sunnydale it found its way back to Captain Forehead. He opened the envelope and I popped out of the amulet. Only problem was, I wasn't exactly corporeal. Once that was fixed and we tried to locate you, bloody Rupert wouldn't tell us where you were." Spike still resented that the Watcher wouldn't tell them, "That is until we found out you were in Italy canoodling with The Immortal." Spike sneered at the name as he paused, watching Buffy for a reaction before continueing, knowing that she must have something to say by now.

Buffy knew there were more important things to focus on in that whole explanation, like why Giles had kept Spike away from her, or how Spike had managed to become corporeal again, or anything really, but she was mostly just stuck on one thing. "Wait a second," she said, holding up a hand. "You're telling me I was...canoodling, and don't think I won't mock you forever for using that word, with some guy called 'The Immortal'?" She gave a snort of amusement. "That's just...can you get more pretentious than that? I mean...seriously."

That taken care of, she focused on the more important bits of what he had said. "I just don't understand why Giles wouldn't tell me," she said, shaking her head. "I mean...I thought you were dead and you weren't and...that's something I would have really liked to know." She sighed. There wasn't much she could do about it now. After a moment's hesitation, she gave him a small smile. "I am glad to see you," she told him. "I never thought I would again and...here you are." She looked down at her hands. "So...you and Angel. Not exactly a team up I ever would have expected what with...well...everything about how you two act together. You didn't drive each other crazy?"

Spike quirked a brow at Buffy, briefly wondering if maybe she was from a time before him and Angel had tracked down The Immortial, but he didn't dwell on that, "I know what we saw and we saw you in a club with The Immortial." Of course Spike was still unaware that it hadn't really been Buffy, but a decoy instead. "And I know The Immortial when I see him. Berk's been a bloody thorn in my side for decades."

"And as for Rupert, as far as he was concerned Angel and I were working for the enemy. Junior Watcher knew too. Surprised he never told you me and Angel came to Italy looking for you." Then again at the same time, Spike wasn't entirely surprised that Andrew hadn't told Buffy. "Oh, we drove each other crazy alright. Almost killed each other a few times."
