WHO: Cobb, Ariadne
WHAT: Dreaming without a Pasiv
WHEN: Tonight
WHERE: Cobb's subconscious

Cobb was standing on a bridge, overlooking an incredible sunset. The air was warm, the spring breeze cool against his face, and he was completely, utterly alone. No projections, no haunting memories. Just peace. And that was when it hit him. He was dreaming. But how?

"Not too shabby," said Ariadne, leaning against the bridge railing a bit down from Cobb as if she'd been there the whole time. She was dressed nearly the same as she had been the first time they met, although her red jacket was now replaced with a sweater that looked like it might have been Arthur's and a ruby pendant glowed warmly on her chest. "If I do say so myself."

Cobb turned, blinking at Ariadne in surprise. "Ariadne?" How did he know it was really her? Eames had been muttering cryptic things about a dream lord, but Cobb didn't dream, so he had yet to meet the man. Entity. Being.

Whatever it was. "Is this your dream or mine?"

"They're all mine, right now," she answered, still looking out at the sunset. "I ended up with the powers of Morpheus. Which basically means complete control of dreams. And walking into them without falling asleep first." A serpentine head poked over the horizon; it bore a suspicious resemblance to the Loch Ness Monster. "That's how we've been sharing dreams without a PASIV. Morpheus brings us together into a shared dream, so it's... I don't know. Magic? Something more elemental than that, maybe. Definitely not chemical. Arthur and the Doctor were trying to build a PASIV but I don't know how far that actually got."

She started walking down the bridge to the other side, glancing over her shoulder at Cobb. "Come on." He'd been her first teacher. He had to see what she could do.

Cobb just stared off into the horizon for a long moment, taking it all in. Was that Nessie? He glanced back at Ariadne, not daring to focus on the creature for long, in case of attracting it's attention. He wasn't sure what to expect.

He nodded, smiling as he started after her. "Where are we going?"

"I don't know yet." she said, and abruptly they were walking down a path in an English country garden, a stately manor at their backs. "Anywhere. It's like discovering dreaming all over again." The hedges ahead of them rustled and parted, and Ariadne turned and tossed a ball of yarn at Cobb. "Sometimes I wonder what would have happened to me if I hadn't been brought here. How could I go back to school after all this? From building worlds to writing papers and maybe, if I was lucky, getting an intro-level job at a firm where I wouldn't get to create anything of my own?"

Cobb caught the yarn reflexively, rolling it between his hands as he glanced from the young woman, to the hedge--his brow rising in amusement. Ariadne and a ball of string? She was building a labyrinth, wasn't she?

"I'm sorry, Ariadne," he murmured as he followed her. "I know I was acting pretty selfishly when I asked Miles to find me an architect to bring into the Dream-share. You know my reasons, but that doesn't really excuse my behavior."

"You had the best reasons, but is that really enough? You're a pretty ruthless person when you get right down to it." It wasn't precisely a labyrinth. More like symbolic architecture that they were walking through, traveling in a straight line as the hedges continued to part. And then they were walking up the side of a skyscraper, with no visible transition in between and no vertiginous change in gravity. "And I get the feeling that three layers and inception aren't really typical for an architect's first job. Especially not with a side trip into limbo."

"No, it's not," Cobb affirmed, "But you're not exactly a typical architects, are you? Even without the extra oomf." She was right, though. He had become a ruthless mercenary. He'd been desperate. And he'd ruined normalcy for her, probably forever.

"You're an incredibly talented young woman. You would have probably been bored with an entry-level job before your ninety-day review."
