Why: Ron is being taught to cook without magic.

"So... I... peel it?" Ron asked, his freckled face pressed into a frown as he began to try and peel away the outside layer of the onion. He was being taught to cook. Without magic. By Lily Evans. Ron had only just been getting used to that fact before his magic was taken, and now not only was he hanging out with a girl who was technically dead and related to his best friend, but he was learning how to not die from some weird muggle kitchen gadget in the process. After all, it was hard to think of her as 'Harry's mum'. She was only a year younger than Ron himself, after all, and actually quite pretty. Until he caught a glimpse of a freakishly familiar pair of bright green eyes and would suddenly he was reminded of who she was.

"Oh, bloody hell," he muttered, because suddenly his own blue eyes were starting to water with the fumes from the onion. Ron sniffed, dropping the knife and stepping sharply back to swipe a hand over his streaming eyes. Which proved to be a mistake as they promptly started to sting. Ron yelped, stumbling back until one large foot stubbed on a table leg.

"Oh, buggering bollocksing crap!" Ron slumped until his long, lanky frame was leaning against the tabletop, scrubbing at his eye with the sleeve of his jumper. "Is cooking always this painful?"

This was turning out to be a bigger disaster than she thought possible. Seriously, it was a wonder some wizards could do anything without hurting, especially the one in front of her. For all she had heard through the stories of her son he had seemed quite the strong man in war, but here a simple onion was defeating him. If the Death Eaters ever found out she half expected them to employ the onion in their strategy.

She was leaning against the table top near him when she saw his eyes begin to water. Her mother had made her cook often growing up, help out in any way she could depending on her age, and like her mum she had developed a bit of an immunity to onions. Something Ron clearly didn't have yet. And when he stumbled about, cursing like it was second nature, she couldn't help but laugh at how stupid he looked.

"Not really. You just seem intent on injuring yourself when it comes to anything muggles are capable of doing."

He'd never understood his Father's obsession with all things muggle, and after this he was pretty sure he was even more in the dark than ever. Ron pulled his hand away from his watering eye to glare grumpily across at her. "Yeah, well... I'd like to see them fly a bloody broom." Even with the fact that here there were some brooms muggles were capable of flying, he felt like he had a point. "We're just... good at different stuff."

He scrubbed the last of the tears from his eyes, leaving them pink and a little swollen, before pulling a face and moving back to the damned onion. "Can't we just buy one of those mica-wave meals and eat that?" They were making spagetti bolognaise, and Ron was almost certain he'd seen shops which sold the ready made version in the plastic tubs. What was it with Potters (even Potters-to-be) and doing everything the hard way?

"They seem to be able to do the basic life skills that you can't?" she asked with a grin before laughing and stepping forward to look at his eyes. They were red, but they would be fine soon. "Next time maybe try putting cold water on your eyes to calm it. After you wash your hands. That was your biggest mistake, putting exactly what was causing you pain straight into your eye. Thought you were smarter than that."

She took a step back as he went back to the onion, pushing herself to sit up on the counter to watch him. For someone only a little bit older than her he really was acting the child. It wasn't as awful as he was making it sound like, and he really was just being rather stubborn.

"Microwave. And we can't just do that because you have no idea what they've put in them. Making it yourself you're more aware of what you're actually eating."

"I can do them when I have a wand!" Ron insisted, then allowed Lily to step forward to check his eyeball hadn't exploded or something mental. They could have for all he knew. Bloody onions. Ron vowed never to eat them again. Unless they were in rings and covered in batter. Or in a stew. Or some other dish he didn't have to prepare. Yet again, he found himself staring into a pair of eyes that were so like Harry's it threw him for a moment before he recovered in time to roll his newly-pinkened eyes at Lily's explanation and step back up to his vegetable arch-enemy.

"You sound like Hermione," he told her, glancing over with a smile curling his lips upward. "She likes telling people what to do as well. This is done!" Ron made an extravagent gesture to the newly chopped onion, which was a little haphazard but more or less recognizable, before turning to pick up a packet of mince from where it lay on the side. "Just like potions, isn't it?" he commented. "Only not quite as deadly boring..."

She laughed at him rolling his eyes, going back to simply watching him. Men really didn't like being told what to do, did they? Though James was slightly more willing but she just blamed that on their relationship. He liked to keep her happy.

"That's not the first time I've been compared to her." Sirius had before, she was sure of it. Maybe she ought to spend more time with this girl. Well she said girl, Lily was sure Hermione was older than she was, but that didn't matter. When he exclaimed that he was finished she moved to she could look over his shoulder, difficult given the height difference, before laughing at his comment.

"Just deadly? For you anyway."
