who: Guinevere/Abigail and Uther
what: Checking up on him.
where: Uther’s flat
when: Before lunch on the 25th
rating: Low
status: in progress

Guinevere was not best pleased about her own situation and that was putting it lightly. She had never thought magic something extremely desirable, even if she only seemed to possess a small amount of it. And despite her love of Merlin and Morgana, she was still wary of such powers when it came to other people. Especially now that she was unaware just how it was possible to control this and she had taken to trying her best to not feel strong emotions, just like it was true with what Morgana said about emotions have a link to magic flaring up. But she didn’t want to spend all day alone in the flat, even with Abigail, so she soon made her mind up.

It seemed odd that her first port of call was her father in law. They rarely spoke alone, but she had been trying her best especially for Abigail’s sake. She deserved to have a grandfather that she was allowed to see regularly and despite Gwen’s slight dislike of the man she was not going to stop Abigail from seeing him. After all, she seemed quite delighted by the older man and if it kept her daughter happy then Guinevere was willing to keep letting them see each other. She just hoped the magic stayed at bay. Holding Abigail closer, trying to make sure she didn’t wriggle too much, she knocked on his door.

Uther opened the door, and was unable to hide his surprise at seeing Guinevere waiting for him on the threshold. He wasn't used her without Arthur, although he had been seeing more of her since the baby had been born. In fact, at the sight of the tiny girl nestled in Guinevere's arms, Uther's face softened pleasantly, becoming a little less of a King and a little more of a Grandfather. It still wasn't a match he would have chosen for his son, but he adored Abigail, and had from the first time he met her.

"Guinevere," he greeted her. There was a moment's hesitation before; "Come on in." The flat was, if he was honest, a bit of a mess. There had been a lot of explosions earlier in the day, and Uther could still feel the magic bubbling through his skin. It was like an illness, and thinking about it made him feel a little ill, like he wanted to crawl out of himself to just escape it. Like he was tainted. At the moment he was working under the hope that if he ignored it, it would just go away.

"Forgive the mess," he offered, as Guinevere entered the main room. before his gaze once again fell onto his Granddaughter. "How is the little one?"

When Gwen walked in and saw the mess, she instantly felt even more worried. Though she did understand, since Arthur seemed to be doing similar things and she had been experiencing odd bursts of magic at times. She would maybe find a time to start to clean up, perhaps distract him with Abigail for long enough.

And with how often his gaze was falling on the child, that would probably be easily done.

"She's well. She can roll over, and hold her head up. Quite the trouble maker now, actually."

Not that she was angry or anything about that. She was excited to see her move on so much. She wanted to ask Uther how he was, see if he was coping but the mess seemed to answer that.

Uther smiled, before holding out his arms for the baby. "May I?" he asked.

He was doing quite well in ignoring the magic, actually. It was a tactic he'd been using since he'd arrived in this city, after all. And he'd discovered that the calmer he was (which wasn't something he could manage when thinking about this change of affairs anyway), the less things exploded and broke around him. Uther had meant to do the tidying, but cleaning up after himself was still something he was getting used to.

"And how are you?" he asked. After all, Arthur had mentioned being worried about the woman in front of him.

The moment Uther reached out for Abigail, the baby began to wriggle more and kick her legs, cooing and squealing for her grandfather. Laughing softly, Guinevere stepped forward to pass the grinning baby over to her grandfather. She only started to wriggle and kick more then, her tiny fists flailing about and Gwen instantly watched for them in case they collided with his face.

"I'm fine too, thank you."

She wasn't but that didn't matter. The main reason she wasn't was because of the man in front of her. He had killed her father, had locked her up because of his accusing her of magic and even if it was someone else's power she had been handed part of her hated it, was nervous over it.

Uther took his granddaughter gladly. When Abigail had been born, the aging monarch had not been much good with handling her. He hadn't had much to do with babies in his time - even when Arthur had been born Uther had avoiding too much real contact. It wasn't how things were done back home. Mother's in their position never nursed or cared for their own children, and the Fathers certainly didn't. There were servants for that kind of thing. But over his time in Colligo and with the baby, Uther had begun to adapt. He could clean for himself now, and even cook a little. And he could hold a child.

Uther sat down on the edge of the sofa, the baby nestled in the crook of his arm, a smile deepening the lines around his eyes and mouth as she wriggled and cooed up at him. Uther held out one finger, callused from years fighting and months working with horses, and the little girl's tiny hand latched on firmly, with a grip that was too strong for her small size. Uther smiled to himself, suddenly thinking of Morgana, and feeling loss ache somewhere deep in his chest.

Her heart warmed at the ease Uther had with Abigail, he was so natural with her. She knew he wasn't very hands on with Arthur, it had caused Arthur to worry about being a father, but she was glad to see that Uther seemed more able with Abigail. Maybe it was just the different situation and place, they weren't in Camelot and he didn't have as stuffy a protocol to follow here.

"She's pleased to see you," Gwen said quietly, though that much was obvious given her daughter's current way of acting. She was so happy, cooing and flailing around in a childish version of a conversation.

But the hand hold made Gwen want to tear up. Especially since it was Uther who initiated it. Sighing softly, she smiled and settled next to him.

"She's strong, like Arthur. She really does have so many of his features."
