WHO: Dresden & Maggie
WHAT: Father/Daughter drama & awkwardness
WHEN: backdated to last weekend (sometime while Jude is resting/recovering)?
WHERE: Maggie's & Jude's place?
WARNINGS: none yet

Harry had met Jo and Gabriel outside the apartments, where the two had proceeded to retrieve Jude and tend to her injuries, while Harry had hurried onward to look after Maggie. He didn't expect the meeting to go over well, or his presence to be appreciated. He certainly didn't expect that he could buy his way into her good graces with the shield bracelet he had spent the past several weeks since her arrival working protective magic into for her--but he was in no way going to leave her alone with the toclaphane finding their way into the buildings.

In fact, he had resigned himself to a rather dismal time of it until Jude was healed and rested enough to return and rescue Maggie from his dreaded company.

Maggie had a basic understanding of what was going on. Jude didn't baby her, and even if she didn't tell Maggie everything, she told her enough. Maggie didn't feel like a pesky, bothersome kid when she was with Jude. She felt important, she felt like she mattered. Jude had told her more than anyone else about the Toclafane, what they were, and what they did. What the could do, and why it was important to stay inside.

Maggie was only 8 years old. Even if she was 'almost 9' she knew she was still a kid. And she didn't want to die. So she listened to Jude, and she stayed inside, and she stayed away from the windows and she didn't look out. She had see Toclafane when she'd first come to Colligo. She didn't really need to see them again, thank you very much.

But now Jude was hurt. And that meant Maggie was on her own. Never mind that she was worried. She didn't really know what was going on. She wanted Jude to come home so they could eat ice cream for dinner and have a sandwich or chicken tenders for dessert. She liked talking to Jude, and she liked looking at Jude. She wondered if she'd look just like that when she was bigger.

And then her dad was there. And she didn't know what to do with that. When she looked at him, all she could see was how he'd killed her mom. And then she thought about how she'd grown up without them, she'd never even known Susan was her mom, never knew who her dad was at all. Not until the day he'd killed her mom. And maybe he'd done it to save her, but she still had a hard time processing it. She was only 8, after all. She was just a kid.

To say Harry sucked at cooking was an understatement, and that was without the constant knowledge that Maggie--the daughter he'd never known--despised him. But he supposed it was fair enough. He pretty much despised himself after what he'd done to the girl's mother.

He rummaged around the kitchen, trying to fix something edible for them, debating whether to risk baking the chicken tenders or just to make sandwiches. He settled on sandwiches, not wanting to ruin Jude's appliances. However, his appetite diminished as he came out and saw the look on Maggie's face. "Maggie?" He set the plate of the sandwiches down on the coffee table. "I have something for you."

Maggie had been reading. or trying to read. pretending to read. She'd had the book open tot he same page for half an hour. She had no idea what the page said, even though she'd read it about fifteen times.

"I'm not hungry," Maggie looked up at her dad. She was hungry. But she didn't want him to think she needed him to make her something to eat. Even if he'd already made it. She could take care of herself.

But he wasn't talking about the food. He'd already set that down. He was talking about something else. Something he'd brought her, maybe. She couldn't den she was curious. But what was it? She didn't want to seem too eager.

Harry just grunted, having long since figured out that arguing with any almost nine year old of his and Susan's was an exercise in futility. He sat down in an adjacent chair, reaching into his pocket for the little velveteen bag that held bracelet. Pretending that he didn't notice a certain little girl pretending that she hadn't just perked up in curiosity, he turned it over in his hand.

"Yeah, I do," he said, "And you know, if you want to talk, you can ask me anything. You deserve to be told the truth." After all, it was the least he could give her now.

Maggie forced her eyes to stay focused, and not follow the movement of the bag. Was it a jewelry bag? It sure looked like it. But she supposed anything could be in the bag. And if he was trying to bribe her...well, she wanted to know what was in the bag before she made any decisions, or judgments.

"I wouldn't know where to start," Maggie admitted. She lifted her gaze, looking up to his face. So many questions ran through her mind, but it was like there was too many of them, and she couldn't focus on just one. They all slipped past, in a blur, like a rushing river.

Harry sighed, running a hand over his face, then folded both hands over the bag. Leaning forward a little, he looked Maggie in the face as well, just shy of meeting her gaze.

"Well, for starters," he said, glancing down at his hands, "I would look you in the eyes, but because we're wizards, there's something called a soul-gaze that would happen, and I don't know if you're ready to know that much about me yet." He spilled the bracelet out of the satchel and held it out to her, free for the taking if she chose.

"It's a shield bracelet," he said, shaking out his own and showing it to her. "I can teach you how to use it, if you want."

"Seems like it would be just an ordinary bracelet, if I didn't know how to use it." Maggie gave him a dead pan look. She reached for the bracelet, and felt a zap of electricity when she touched it. She almost dropped it, but managed to recover.

"What's a soul gaze?" She asked, looking up again. Now that he'd mentioned it, she realised he never looked her in the eye.

Harry quirked an eyebrow at her, swallowing a laugh. See? Not just an ordinary bracelet. "Sorry," he muttered, "I'm still working on my finesse. As for a soul gaze, well..." He shrugged his shoulders a little as he searched for words.

"It's really hard to describe, because it's a lot to take in, in a very short time, and everyone experiences it a little differently. But basically it gives you a glimpse of who a person really is, deep down. Everything they are, and everything they're capable of being. It can be pretty overwhelming. Your, uh, your mom actually fainted after tricking me to look her in the eyes," he added, just in case her progeny had any ideas about finding out what a monster this Harry Dresden really was.

"Why did she have to trick you?" Maggie fingered the bracelet. She could feel the energy contained in the charms that dangled off the tiny chain. She felt almost mesmerized by it, but she kept her focus on him.

She didn't want to like him. She wanted to hate him, but even though he don't some pretty terrible things that day, he'd also saved her life. And then he'd tried to shove her away again. But she knew he'd sent her away because he was worried someone else would try to hurt her if sh stayed with him. Maybe things were different here. Things could be different here.

"She didn't have to," Harry said, grimacing. "She wanted to. It was back when we first met, and I was trying not to freak her out. I don't make a habit of soul gazing people unless I really need know the truth."

He realized, someday, Maggie might need to know that truth, but he wasn't going to force it on her. Let her find out how a soulgaze worked with someone closer to her own age, who's soul wasn't quite so scarred.

She considered forcing him to look her in the eye, but she decided, at least for the moment, to call a truce with herself, and not antagonize him. He seemed to be trying to give it to her straight, and the bracelet was a decent peace offering anyway.

"Okay. Tell me about the bracelet," she said, fingering one of the charms.

"Protective charms, and a chain made from different metals with protective magical properties," he explained, fingering his own bracelet. He'd tried to make hers a little more delicate, a little prettier, but the principle was the same.

"It's designed to stop solid projectiles, fire, heat. If you concentrate, you should be able to put a protective bubble around yourself so that nothing can touch you." If he had his druthers, he would have gotten her a hooded raincoat and spelled it like his old leather duster. But he hadn't been too sure about her size. Or how fast she would outgrow her clothes.

"How do I do that?" Maggie was aware she wasn't like other kids. She didn't know any other eight year old who had been kidnapped by vampires. She's always thought vampires were nonsense. But being aware she wasn't like other kids didn't mean she had any idea what made her different, or how to do anything purposeful about it.

"Can you kind of feel the magic on the bracelet?" he asked, knowing that she could. He'd seen how fascinated she was, whether or not she realized what it was that the was sensing. "Just...focus on that and try to picture a shield going up around you. Here--" He patted his knee. "Sit by me and see if you can get a sense for it when I put mine up."

"I can feel it," Maggie whispered. It was subtle, but it was definitely something. She looked down when he patted his knee. She shifted just a little, not too close. She might have been starting to change her mind about him, but she wasn't ready to throw her arms around him and call him 'daddy' just yet.

After a moment, she felt the change in the air around them. She put her hand out, toward him, until she met a wall of resistance. She couldn't see anything, couldn't actually feel anything, but there was something blocking her hand from getting any closer to him.

Even if she'd only moved an inch or two, it was progress. More than Harry had dared hoping for. He had to take a moment to quiet the little thrill that went through him at the fact before he raised his will, and the invisible shield along with it.

"I learned to shield with someone throwing baseballs at me," he said, "Personally, I think snowballs are nicer, but we're kind of up a crick." He shrugged. "I'll have to tell you about the seven laws of magic sometime, but my main concern right now is making sure you have the tools to keep yourself safe."

"Why would someone throw baseballs at you?" She may not like him much, but she didn't feel inclined to throw baseballs at him. That wasn't even something she'd think of doing. And besides, she was starting to think maybe he wasn't so bad after all.

"Because my evil foster-father thought it was the best way for me to take my lessons seriously?" Harry grimaced. He'd gotten a lot of bruises, but it wasn't until Du Morne had started pitching at Elaine that Harry had figured out how to shield in a hurry. Then the young wizard's protective instincts had taken over. "The school of hard knocks is an excellent teacher, but the tuition is cheaper if you can take it second-hand."

"Why were you in foster care?" Maggie wasn't sure, but she thought she'd heard that she was going in to foster care, until they could find a permanent home for her. Her adoptive family had been savagely murdered, her mother was dead too, and her dad didn't want her back home. Foster care was for kids who had nowhere else to go.

"My mom--Margaret--died when I was born, and my dad passed away when I was about six," Harry explained, glancing down at his hands. He'd dropped his shield by now, trusting that she wasn't going to suddenly throw any dangerous projectiles at him while they were having their little heart to heart. "I had a pretty rough time, growing up."

He was just sorry it had carried over to his daughter.

"I had a normal childhood, until a few weeks ago. I had parents, brother and sisters. I had a family. And we were happy. And then those...those things came in and I could stop them. And they..." Maggie shook her head. She honestly didn't remember what happened next. She knew her entire family had been killed, and she remembered the blood, so much blood, and the fear that they were going to kill her too, and even more fear when they didn't kill her, but took her with them. The details were lost to her, but she remembered the feeling all too well.

"And now they're all dead, and Susan's dead and I didn't even know she was my mom before. Are you going to die too, Dad?" She looked up at him, genuine fear in her eyes.

Harry's throat constricted as Maggie spoke, his chest tight with grief for the daughter he just barely knew. There was anger, too, and he fought to keep his hands from clenching into fist; but mostly sorrow.

It cut him to the quick to see any little girl so afraid, but especially his own. "I..." He cleared his throat, swallowing the emotions. Let her see that he cared, sure, but he didn't want to scare her worse by turning into a giant, blubbering mess at that one word. Dad. "Not if I can help it, Maggie."

"Okay." That was enough of an answer, for now. It didn't really alleviate her fear, but she took in a breath and pushed it out slowly. "And I can keep the bracelet?" She asked, shifting gears. She fingered the charms that dangled from the chain.

"Yeah," he said, smiling softly. "It's yours." It did him good to know she actually wanted to keep it now. He wished he had something of Susan's that he could give to her, but he had arrived in Colligo with nothing but the clothes on his back. Which was pretty much all he had left back in Chicago as well.

"Are you sure you're not hungry?" he asked, picking up a sandwich for himself. It was something to do, to fill the pauses. "I'm a really terrible cook, but I do make a decent PB&J."

"And maybe I could stay with you." Maggie pushed her hair out of her face. She was young enough that she could completely change her perceptions over the course of a single conversation. She'd never forget what he'd done, but maybe just maybe he didn't have any other choice. He'd saved her life, after all, even if he'd had to kill her mother to do it.

Harry's eyebrows rose a little at the suggestion, a tiny flutter of hope beating in his chest. He felt incredibly silly, but then, it should have come as no surprise that she would be able to wrap him around her finger in a heartbeat. He'd always been a sucker for pretty girls.

Even so, he hesitated. He knew it would still take some time before she would be able to truly forgive him. If ever. He wasn't even sure he could ever forgive himself. "I would be happy to have you," he said honestly, "But I understand if you need to think about it for a while. Or if you change your mind and want to come back here when Jude gets better."
