WHO: The Tenth Doctor and Rose (Perhaps with cameos from K-9 and a tortoise)
WHAT: Attempts at reconciliation
WHEN: Late this morning.
WHERE: Their flat.
RATING/PROGRESS: Probably low. Maybe mild swearing. In progress.

The Doctor had spent his night calibrating the TARDIS. Although the old girl didn't need it, never needed it, but it was soothing. And Rose wasn't talking to him so it was probably best to just stay out of her way and let her get over it in her own time. The Doctor wasn't one to back out of a confrontations - he could be damn frightening if he wanted to be, but he wasn't about to argue with Rose over something so ridiculous and inconsequential. Honestly. Humans. They were so clever and yet completely and utterly ruled by their hearts. Time Lords were so much more logical. Perhaps that was half their problem...

Still, it was late morning by the time he revealed himself, cracking open the door and stepping quietly out, K-9 trundling happily after him and away to the power socket behind the sofa. He should probably put a stop to the robots love of electricity from the mains... The Time Lord stopped, tongue wedged thoughtfully into the roof of his mouth as he looked through the door of the spare room, at the girl currently lain across the sofa. Then he disappeared back into the Police box, returning a moment later with a steaming mug.

Without a word, the tenth Doctor strode over the room and passed the tea over, suddenly feeling a little awkward, which was rare for him. Normally he had no idea how painful social situations were for people. He shoved his hands into his pockets, hovering uncertainly and waiting for someone to talk... What were you supposed to say in these situations? His automatic response ("This is completely ridiculous.") didn't seem to be a good idea. And he hadn't watched enough Coronation Street to know what they would do. So he just waited, listening to the gentle hum of K-9 and pulse of the TARDIS' console from the other room.

She heard the sound of the TARDIS in the spare room and closed her eyes, wincing a little. The pain killers hadn't fully kicked in but that was mostly because she had only been up for twenty minutes and moved ten minutes ago to get the pain killers before collapsing back onto the sofa. The door opened but she didn't look, but heard the unmistakable sound of K-9 moving. Not much of a guard dog, but despite what she may say to the Doctor she was pretty fond of him.

There was suddenly a mug in front of her and she reached up to take it, still not looking at him. She could sense the awkwardness coming from him as well as herself, but didn't quite know what to say yet. After all, what was there to say after yesterday. She wasn't exactly going to see if Reinette was alright, she couldn't care less at the moment. Instead, she stared down at the tortoise that had seemed to keep her company at least since she woke up.

"Shouldn't he...hibernate or something?" Okay so it wasn't the best thing to ask, nothing to do with their current situation, but it was the only thing she found herself saying.

The Doctor glanced down at Jason, who peered back through old, bored eyes. "Been in the TARDIS too long," he replied, a tiny sentence for him, but he couldn't think of anything else. "His body clock's all... wonky. He'll catch on eventually."

There was another long pause, then he sighed and sat down on the coffee table placed beside the sofa, long legs folding uncomfortably in the limited space. In the following silence he lasted about ten seconds before he started to twitch like a mad thing, knee bouncing, fingers drumming some mad pattern against the surface. K-9 whirred somewhere.

"Do you need anything?" he finally asked, his tone quiet.

"Oh...Right."

It was stupid. This was stupid. But it wasn't something easily changed, and Rose lifted the mug to her lips and took a sip just for something to do. She could sense the Doctor already feeling uncomfortable and didn't know if she felt guilty or felt like he deserved it. His question had her finally looking at him, trying to ignore the slightly duller pain in her head.

"I'm fine. Thanks."

Oh, this was horrible. Horrible. And it was worse because he didn't understand it. What was she angry about? The fact that she'd argued with Reinette, which probably had something to do with what had happened between them both in the old days? But it was so long ago now, at least in a human life, and she'd had Mickey bumbling around back then anyway. So why was she angry with him now? He hadn't done anything. All he'd done was diffuse the argument before someone said something they regret. Now for some reason he seemed to be the one suffering.

It was unbelievably frustrating. Usually he had an inkling with what was going on. But this seemed to defy all logic. The Doctor frowned, thoughts tumbling frantically through his usually quick mind and coming up with nothing.

Oh, for Goodness sake. This is why he tried to keep from discussing feelings. They were so... messy. Unpredictable.

"You know," he said, conversationally, as if a pleasant tone would make this any less likely to turn into an argument. "This is completely illogical."

"Illogial? Illogical?!"

That had her standing up, shoving the mug on the floor away from the tortoise before pushing herself past the Doctor's leg so the sofa was between them. Her eyes hardened every time she looked at him and the pain in her head that was calming suddenly surged. Putting her hand to her head, she groaned as she willed it to calm. She could really do with the pain disappearing by now.

"Why are you such a stupid...dense...bloody alien?!"

Any other man would know exactly what was going on here. He saw no problem with Reinette, in Rose's eyes, threatening to get in between her and the Doctor and if he saw no problem with that then she had a reason to be pissed off at him.

Oh. Well, that had gone well...

The Doctor remained seated as she jumped out and strode away from him, putting the furniture between them. He knew enough about conflict to know that if he stood too it'd only be taken as an attack. But he sighed heavily, glancing over to where K-9 had rolled around to watch with some interest. Jason paid not attention, instead choosing to start his painfully slow journey towards the kitchen.

"Is it Reinette?" he offered, helplessly, one hand rising to run through his hair. "Rose, I don't understand. What do you think is going to happen? I'm going to run off with her the moment she asks? Not that she will. Why would she? That doesn't make any sense."

He hadn't missed the thinly veiled threat on the network, but he hadn't seen it as anything but that. A threat. Reinette wouldn't attempt that - she was a good person. And even if she did try he didn't see how Rose could really think anything would come of it. He may not be completely up to date with human protocol but he wasn't a complete idiot.

Hearing her name made her want to throw the closest thing at hand at his head. But seeing as that was a lamp she really thought it best she didn't. She didn't fancy cleaning up after, at least. So she settled with glaring harder at him as he continued to ramble on. But then something grabbed her attention and she groaned in frustration.

"You didn't even say you'd say no. Well let's be realistic here, who would say no to a woman like that?! I should let you go off with her, clearly that's the type of woman you've always liked. I mean she's smart and beautiful and...can do so much more. There, perfect match for you! Anyway, I'm just a child, after all. That's what she thinks and you too are so alike that you must think that way too!"

She needed more vodka even if her head protested at that. It was all true. Why would he chose her? She wasn't exactly the best thing ever compared to the other woman.

"Oh, for..." The Doctor caught himself, finally jumping to his feet and turning, hands flying to his head to tug at his thick chestnut hair. "Rose, that's insane. Do you not see how insane that is?" He spun to face her, one hand extended, "I mean, Reinette's lovely but you! You! You looked into the heart of the TARDIS, you absorbed the time vortex! You..." He looked wildly around the flat. Their flat.

"We met Queen Victoria and fought a werewolf! Darleks and Cybermen! All that, we did it together! And even after everything you honestly think I'd chose her? That's... I don't... How could you... I love you!"

God, she was frustrating sometimes. Wonderful, amazing, but incredibly stubborn if she wanted to be.

She took a step back as he stood, her eyes going wide for a moment before she made herself appear more at ease. Not that she was. Her mind was spinning and she wanted to just go curl up and sleep some more but she couldn't. Because he did seem genuine that he would never pick Reinette. But she had been hurt by a man before. She'd been engaged and broken hearted, for christ's sake. And the love she felt for the man before her was so much stronger than it was for that bastard who broke her heart.

"We'd done a lot when you did choose her," she said quietly. "I wouldn't blame you. She's everything I'm not."

In her eyes that was completely true. She believed him when he said he loved her but her insecurities wouldn't let her trust him for this moment. She wasn't being rational, but when it came to defending her heart she rarely was rational.
