Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Reg and Juno
What: Juno is upset at the world for changing her plans
When: Tonight, after the ultrasound
Where: Juno's place
Rating/Warnings: I'll start with a warning for swearing
Status: in progress, closed

So two pregnant ladies and two gentlemen having no real relations with either of the two pregnant ladies walked into the radiology sections of the hospital. Awkwardness ensued for the tech on duty that day as she tried to figure out who was the father of the baby on screen. Regulus knew she'd had a difficult time of it, the freakishly tall Sam looked far too old and for the most of the experience Regulus sat, pale faced, and staring at the floor with only a few glances every now and then when he thought he could manage confronting his discomfort of pregnancy and weird gooey looking things like that stuff spread on Juno's abdomen.

Not to mention there was a somber mood over all the attendants, Regulus guessed it had to do with the fact their numbers should have been five instead of four. Castiel was not with them.

Regulus stared at the bowl of raw cookie dough balanced on Juno's stomach, they'd come back to her flat and she'd immediately started making the stuff, she even tried baking a few cookies but they came out much like something Regulus would make, burnt and not at all appetizing. They'd given up at that point and now Juno was trying to teach, through action more than through words that it was okay to eat raw cookie dough. But that wasn't the only thing holding Regulus' hand, Juno looked upset and that put Regulus on edge.

"Muggle school was interesting," he attempted to break the silence.

Juno had tried not to take too much evil glee in watching Regulus attempt to keep his cookies down--and the funny looks that Sam had given him--during the procedure. But she hadn't been able resist a little tease about how she was a sacred vessel, and the only thing he had in his stomach was jelly beans. He'd looked perplexed, and vaguely ill, but he'd impressed her with his comeback that technically, the baby wasn't in her stomach. And he got points for being there in spite of his squicks.

Now, she was mostly playing with the cookie dough, because really, there was only so much sugar and butter a person could eat. Too much of a good thing was still too much.

"What did you think of the computer lab?"

"Interesting..." he'd already used that adjective, he knew and spoke quickly to add more, "They are fascinating, all that information inside something that small." And he'd only seen the school lab computers, nothing overly spectacular in the smallness yet containing vasts amounts of data area.

It was odd, had Regulus stumbled upon computers on his own, or had been shown them by someone else he would have shrugged them off as dross and unimportant muggle things that he as a wizard didn't have to care about. But Juno was contained chaos with an odd mixture of responsibility, he was still trying to figure that out, and something about the way she showed him things made him stop to watch and listen.

"I'll probably buy one."

Juno grinned, laughing out loud at Regulus' fascination with muggle tech. "You think those were small, you should see some of the net-books, or the 4G mobile phones they advertise on TV all the time. Talk about holding a world of information in the palm of your hand. They just keep getting smaller and smaller, yet somehow they're magically able to hold more and more junk!"

Unlike her stomach, which she gave one last cross-eyed glance and set the bowl of cookie dough aside, propping her feet up on the coffee table. "Although, for movie-watching, even online, I still say bigger screen is better."

"They get smaller?" He was pleased to see Juno smile and he responded in kind. He didn't know what a net-book or a 4G mobile phone was but, sure, he nodded and just went along with it. "Sounds like you need to come with me when I go get one."

The change in Juno's mood heartened Regulus and he found himself scooping out a spoonful of cookie dough.

After thoughtfully sucking the stuff off the spoon, without intending that to appear as anything other than him eating something off a spoon, he decided to ask what might send Juno back into her bad mood. "Are you alright?"

She gave him a smug little smirk as he finally gave in and tried the cookie dough, nonchalantly drumming her fingers on the expanse of t-shirt stretched over her tummy. She thought about ignoring his question altogether for a minute, pretending to play games with the wiggling creature in her womb.

"I'm okay, I guess," she said, finally looking up from chasing the tiny kicks across her abdomen. "I mean, it's not like he was my boyfriend or anything. It's just. This is the second family I've picked out for the kid. The second deal that's fallen through thanks to whoever the hell brought us all here."

The cookie dough was good, Regulus could deny that, as was apparent when he went in for another scoop. He worked his tongue against the sweet chocolately goodness while he waited for Juno to respond. She was using some classic avoidance techniques, Regulus knew all about avoiding, he was a pro at it himself.

"Who wasn't your boyfriend?" Regulus felt a momentary ping of jealousy at that and shoved the feeling down, not the moment to get irrational. "Second family you've picked out? You can do that?" Regulus felt he was missing some key bits of information here. He scooped more cookie dough, this stuff was good. "I'm sorry I'm not following."

"Castiel, the other scary surrogate brother you met at Thanksgiving," Juno said, realizing that she could be kind of non sequitur sometimes. A lot of the time, actually. She started over. "Sam and Cas were going to adopt my oops-baby. They were both supposed to be there for the ultrasound, but Cas disappeared yesterday. All his stuff is just...gone."

She folded her arms around her stomach, like she was hugging herself. "I had a different couple picked out, back home, and then I ended up here. They probably think I changed my mind. And now...I don't know. Sam's being really supportive, but I can tell he's upset, and I don't know what to do."

"Oh." A lame thing to say in the face of all that. Something Juno had been counting on had suddenly been ripped from her. What do you say to that? It was true, in normal Castiel could have just as easily have died, messing up plans that way. But this wasn't normal, add that on top of dealing with loss, and things became a whole other level of difficult to take.

Regulus was inexperienced with comfort, as well. He didn't get much of it growing up, he didn't give it often, either. He didn't like touch unless he gave permission first and because of his own aversions to touch he often wasn't the first to extend a kind hand. But he did remember Morgana's attempts at comforting him, and he definitely did like touching Juno, you couldn't kiss without doing that.

He reached a hand over to cover hers and gave it a gentle squeeze.

She glanced down at his hand, smiling softly as she squeezed back. She figured he wasn't much of a touchy-feely kind of guy, so she could appreciate the gesture for what it was, even if she did miss her dad's bear hugs sometimes. Hand-holding was probably a big deal for the heir of proper, wizard aristocracy.

"Yeah," she said, letting herself sag into the couch cushions. "I guess I still have like four months to figure out all the details. If all else fails, there's always daycare. I'm sure there have been worse candidates for single motherhood than me."

Regulus smiled when Juno squeezed his hand in response to his. He could learn how to give comfort, he supposed, though he was definitely not ready to step up to hugging yet. Baby steps, baby steps.

Four months was a long time in this place, especially when something new happened about every other week and people came and went on a rather monthly basis. A whole shit ton of things could happen in the span of four months. But Regulus held his tongue on that, no need to point out things could get worse.

He chose the lesser of two evils and brought up his mother - how strange that would be the lesser.

"Well, you have two prime examples of non-single mothers to see that you already could pull things off better." Between the ditching and cacti on Juno's side and the yelling and beatings on his side Juno was down right perfect with this pregnancy thing in comparison. "You already know cacti are horrible gifts."

"Yeah," she agreed, laughing a little. It felt good that he could make her laugh, even if it wasn't full-blown, side-splitting hilarity quite yet. She liked him for it.

"I guess I just can't decide which would be worse. Keeping it, and never being around because I'm trying to finish school and hold down a job at the same time, or giving it up." She sighed. "Especially here. Even if I found the perfect couple, one or both of them could end up disappearing like Cas did. I mean, think about what that could do to a kid. Or what if they send me back, and the kid goes with me? What's that gonna do to the adoptive parents? This place is just profoundly, irreversibly screwed up."

She sighed. "Sorry. I didn't mean to get all depressive again. I'm just...how am I supposed to make an informed decision when nobody really knows what to expect around here?"
